Book excerpt: It has been well established that African Americans face a myriad of health disparities, including among diseases that prematurely shorten life, such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. However, little is known about health disparities among African American women, who have traditionally been underrepresented in research. This could mean that they are not receiving the highest possible quality of care. Individual cultural factors that may play a role in perpetuating these health disparities remain poorly understood. This study explores the relationship of individuals’ use of black media and health literacy, health beliefs, and participation in preventive health behaviors related to problems such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. One hundred forty-one African American women completed the Powe Fatalism Inventory, Cancer Worry Scale, 2 items from the Health Literacy Scale, and three items from the Personal Health Survey as part of a larger study. Also, the first four items of the Preference for African American Things subscale of the African American Acculturation Scale were used to measure Use of Black Media. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and logistic regression. Use of Black media was found to have a relationship with health attitudes but not health literacy or health behaviors.

The relationships between culture, depressive symptoms, symptom identity, mental healthrelated quality of life, functional limitations, self-assessed health and care seeking were examined. The study interviewed 240 European American, African American, and Hispanic/Latino older adults. Contrary to expectations, no differences were found in symptom identity, mental health-related quality of life, self-assessed health, functional limitations and care seeking from a psychologist or psychiatrist, or any other mental health professional among cultures. No differences were observed among depressive symptom groups in symptom identity, and care seeking. As expected, patients with no depressive symptoms had better mental health-related quality of life, self-assessed health, and less functional limitations than those with above threshold depressive symptoms. As expected, European Americans with subthreshold depressive symptoms had better self-assessed health than Hispanics/Latinos with sub-threshold depressive symptoms. Contrary to expectations, acculturation did not predict health outcomes not did it moderate the relationship between symptom identity and health. In conclusion, few differences among cultural and depressive symptom groups were found. Other factors, such as perceived control, may better explain health disparities among minorities.

Book excerpt: Evidence indicates that people of color underutilize mental health services, but little is known empirically about the help-seeking behaviors of African American emerging adults. The present mixed method study utilizes a concurrent design with nested samples for the qualitative and quantitative components to examine willingness to seek help and help-seeking intentions among college students. Data was collected from four location sites including Louisiana State University (n=38), Texas State University (n=15), The University of Southern Mississippi (n=65) and Southern University and A&M College (n=3). Minority and non-minority participants completed the Willingness-To-Seek-Help Questionnaire and the General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (n=120; M age=24 years; range= 18-29 years). Concurrently, African American emerging adult participants (n=6) who have sought out professional mental health treatment within the past 12 months completed in-depth interviews. Main findings include that minority emerging adults report lower willingness to seek formal psychological help than non-minority emerging adults. Minority emerging adults report lower formal help-seeking intention for suicidal or emotional problems. Findings include causes of distress, sources of support, and factors that encourage and discourage formal help-seeking among African American emerging adults. Correlational analysis showed that, among African American emerging adults, race and age are predictive of low willingness to seek help and age, gender and school affiliation are predictive of general help-seeking behavior. Findings of a thematic analysis showed that perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, self-efficacy, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action and social support are all constructs that influence the formal help-seeking experience. A policy implication is to improve public health policies to increase access to formal mental health treatment. Policy and practice implications are to promote and support the use of non-traditional formal support, such as teletherapy on college campuses and at community mental health centers. Other solutions for barriers to formal mental health services are discussed.

There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States.
