Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting as an Aid to Business Profits The accounting of today is very different from that of a few years past; the only accounting which the writer thinks worthy of the name is that which combines an exact book record of transactions with an exact book record of operations so that causes as Well as effects may be studied. Accounting can be and should be constructive and not merely historical; it should point out wastes and lead to betterments. In short it should, if it is to make for better business, tell the owner or executive every possible fact of his affairs. The writer's procedure has been to take first in each chapter a number of incidents drawn from an experience with some thousands of concerns and then to develop the subject in a practical way, giving the various labor-saving forms which have been found most efficient, and finally to show how the actual eu tries should be made. Thus the business man will best grasp the full import and will not become confused with the mere terms of accounting - with which formality few business men have very much patience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montgomery's Auditing Economists pretty generally agree that the diminishing value of the dollar has resulted in an overstatement of business profits. The word overstatement may not appeal to you any more than it does to me but I think we can agree on one thing - conventional reports of corporate profits under present conditions are highly susceptible Of being misunderstood. This condition is rightly a matter Of concern to accountants and businessmen who have the problem of reducing to dollars the results of a fixed fiscal period which has two open ends. The inventories, plant accounts and other items are fluctuating at the beginning and the end. It is impossible to restate dollar figures in the books simultaneously with fluctuations which may or may not retain their up or down course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Accounting, Vol. 4: Advanced and Analytical Accounting Ten years ago almost any contribution to the liter ature of accountancy would have been welcomed. Today, however, with the increasing number of excel lent publications, it is incumbent upon one who puts forth a new accounting work to justify his action. Much more is it necessary to explain the publication of a set of accounting books. Hence it is desirable to state at the outset the purpose of Business Account ing and to outline its scope and general methods of presentation. While many books have been published on account ing topics, in almost every case they are unrelated vol umes. In some few instances, a volume on accounting has logically followed another by the same author, but with these few exceptions every one published has been written without connection with, or adjustment to, any of those already existing. Under these conditions, the student of accounting, to get any connected and logical knowledge of his subject, must find one of his books here, another there, a third somewhere else, and bridge over the gaps between them as best he may. The proc ess is difficult, and the accounting knowledge he obtains is not always well co-ordinated and logically developed. The volumes of Business Accounting are intended to meet this situation. They cannot, it is true, provide a course of study in the sense that prescribed readings are recommended, written answers to questions required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Accounting: Its Principles and Some of Its Problems IN the following treatise an attempt is made to present the principles of accounting. In doing so the details of technic, important though they are, are purposely omitted or treated with the scantest mention. The essence of ao counting, from the author's view point, is the presentation, first, of a correct exhibit of the financial status of the con cern at a given moment of time, and, secondly, a showing of the results obtained during a given period of time. The first is embodied in the Balance Sheet; the second in the Income or Profit and Loss statement. In the ordinary routine of the accountant 's toil there is, indeed, another function; that of keeping account of claims and property, in order to secure the concern against the loss which might arise from forgetfulness, carelessness or dishonesty. This phase of accounting attains its acme in governmental accounting where the essential thing is to insure the proper handling of vast sums. But this seems a matter of much less scientific interest and is not treated in this work. The method of treatment, in general, has therefore been to consider how a given transaction is made manifest in the Balance Sheet, the goal which the accountant ever has in mind. The technical entries to be made in the journal or in other books of original entry are excluded. They are not of such importance for the forms in which such entries are made vary according to the needs of the office economy.
