This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining a guide for the Museum visitor with scholarly discussions of all objects on display, this catalogue provides background on the society, history, technology, and commerce of the Etruscan and Faliscan cultures from the ninth through the first centuries B.C. Several groups of material illustrate social, historical, and technological phenomena currently at the forefront of scholarly debate and study, such as the crucial period of the turnover from Iron Age hut villages to the fully urbanized princely Etruscan cities, the development and extent of ancient literacy, and the position of women and children in ancient societies. Many special objects seldom found or generally inaccessible in the United States include Faliscan tomb groups, Etruscan inscriptions, helmets, and trade goods. The catalogue presents and analyzes objects of warfare, weaving, animals, religious beliefs, architectural and terracotta roofing ornaments, Etruscan bronze-working for utensils, weapons, and artwork, and fine, generic portraiture. It discusses the symbolic meaning of such objects deposited in tombs as a chariot buried with a Faliscan lady at Narce, a senator's folding stool buried in a later tomb at Chiusi, and a pair of horse bits with the teeth of a chariot team still adhering to them where the teeth fell when sacrificed for a funeral in the fifth-century necropolis at Tarquinia—much later than the horse sacrifice was previously known in Etruria.

Book Synopsis Mediterranean Voyages by : Helen Dawson
Download or read book Mediterranean Voyages written by Helen Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands are ideal case studies for exploring social connectivity, episodes of colonisation, abandonment, and alternating phases of cultural interaction and isolation. Their societies display different attitudes toward the land and the sea, which in turn cast light on group identities. This volume advances theoretical discussions of island archaeology by offering a comparative study of the archaeology of colonisation, abandonment, and resettlement of the Mediterranean islands in prehistory. This comparative and thematic study encourages anthropological reflections on the archaeology of the islands, ultimately focusing on people rather than geographical units, and specifically on the relations between islanders, mainlanders, and the creation of islander identities. This volume has significance for scholars interested in Mediterranean archaeology, as well as those interested more broadly in colonisation and abandonment.

Book Synopsis A Biblical Path for a Prosperous Society by : Brian Baugus
Download or read book A Biblical Path for a Prosperous Society written by Brian Baugus and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines what Deuteronomy has to say about human rights and the role of government, culture, and investment in creating a flourishing and prosperous society. By exploring the political-economic principles Deuteronomy lays out as well as other parts of the Bible, Baugus argues that those principles are still applicable today and can be valuable in helping developing nations to become prosperous and in helping developed nations, many of which seem to have lost sight of these principles, stay that way. Milk and Honey will be of interest to scholars and students who are curious about what the ancient foundational texts of Western civilization have to say about prosperity, growth, and what a flourishing political economy looks like.
