Book excerpt: This study poses the question: Is there a relationship between student use of mobile technology in an online environment and student achievement expressed by final grades? The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between mobile learning (m-learning) using mobile technology and academic achievement in terms of final grades in an online environment. The literature on m-learning indicates the freedom and flexibility of the m-learner constitutes a new paradigm in education. The untethered nature of m-learning means students can access course content anywhere, anytime. Studies have focused on the use of specific technologies in learning environments; this study uses a bivariate correlation method to cut across disciplines and measure the magnitude of mobile technology use as a function of degree of access to course materials while mobile. The degree of mobility and GPA were captured through an anonymous survey with analysis designed to discover the relationship between the variables. This study fills an important gap in assessing the impact of m-learning on academic achievement. Overall results did not show a significant relationship between m-learning and academic achievement. Results indicate that a larger study to include location context and quality of institutional support for mobility would better understand the impact of m-learning on academic achievement in the online environment.

Book excerpt: In the last two decades, there has been growing interest in pursuing theoretical paradigms that capture complex learning situations. Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is one of several theoretical frameworks that became very popular among educational researchers because it conceptualizes individuals and their environment as a holistic unit of analysis. It assumes a non-dualistic ontology and acknowledges the complexities involved in human activity in natural settings. Recently, reputable journals such as the American Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, and Educational Researcher that are targeted for a wide-range of audience have included articles on CHAT. In many of such articles, CHAT has been referred to as social constructivism, sociocultural theory, or activity theory. Activity systems analysis is one of the popular methods among CHAT researchers for mapping complex human interactions from qualitative data. However, understanding the methods involved in activity systems analysis is a challenging task for many researchers. This difficulty derives from several reasons. First the original texts of CHAT are in Russian and there have been numerous authors who report on the difficulties of reconciling translation problems of the works of original authors’ such as Vygotsky and Leontiev. Second, in North America activity systems analysis has deviated from the Russian scholars’ intentions and Engeström’s original work using the triangle model to identify tensions to overcome and bring about sociopolitical change in participant practices. Third, to this date there are numerous publications on the theoretical background of activity theory and studies reporting the results of using activity systems analysis for unpacking qualitative data sets, but there have been no methodological publications on how researchers engage in activity systems analysis. Thus, there is a dearth of literature in both book and journal publications that guide researchers on the methodological issues involving activity systems analysis.

Book excerpt: This study investigated how current levels of computer technology competence, confidence, and attitudes of community college students toward technology in learning are affected by current access, demographic characteristics, and past experiences with computer technology. A survey and quantitative analysis were used to examine the interactions of first generation college student status, age, gender, ethnicity, primary language, employment, current income, history of access, and current access to computer and internet technology with computer technology beliefs, troubleshooting confidence, and types of technology use. A subgroup chosen from the survey respondents was interviewed individually to garner more detail and to get a greater sense of the individual perspectives, stories, and narratives of participants regarding their personal experiences that lie behind their answers on the survey. Using an ex post facto factor analysis, the attitudes subscale in the survey was divided into the dependent variables of beliefs and troubleshooting confidence. These dependent variables were measured for impact from the predictor variables of gender, age, ethnicity, first generation college student status, hours worked per week, current income, and history of access variables in multiple regression analyses. Factor analysis and multiple regressions were also used to examine the effects of gender, age, and current income on the current access of participants to computer technology, such as personal or public access to the internet and types of internet access in the form of mobile or immobile access. Finally, factor analysis and multiple regressions were used to examine the effects of gender, age, and current income on the types of computer technology participants used. Results showed no significant effects of any of the selected predictor variables on the beliefs of participants regarding the use of computer technology. Results also showed that females tended to have less confidence when troubleshooting problems encountered while using computer technology than males, regardless of age or income. In terms of access, younger participants reported higher levels of the use of public resources with immobile internet access and more use of laptops with wireless connections. The interview data supported the findings of the factor analyses and multiple regressions. The findings were discussed in terms of the persistence of gender disparities in more complex computer technology tasks and cultural shifts regarding the perception of the ubiquity and necessity of the use of computer technology. These cultural shifts appear to be embraced by younger participants, who seem to be more comfortable with high mobility and the perception that internet can be accessed as a public resource regardless of personal resource constraints.
