Book excerpt: Parental treatment preferences for children's mental health treatment have received the most attention using the construct of treatment acceptability. Research has reported that mothers generally endorse greater treatment acceptability for behavioral parent training (BPT) compared to stimulant medication for the treatment of symptoms of childhood Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). My study investigated the influence of experience parenting a child with ADHD in moderating mothers' ratings of treatment acceptability for these two treatments. I also investigated the influence of communicating information regarding the demands of BPT and the probability of experiencing side effects of stimulant medication on mothers' acceptability ratings. To expand the measurement of treatment acceptability beyond the usual rating scale approach, I also used a measure of treatment preferences. Mothers reported which treatment (BPT vs. medication) they would recommend and why, if they were advising the parent of a child with ADHD. Participants included 71 mothers of boys with ADHD and a comparison group of 71 mothers of boys without behavioral problems. As predicted experience with ADHD moderated treatment acceptability. Mothers in the comparison group endorsed greater acceptability for BPT compared to medication; however, mothers in the ADHD group did not differ in ratings of acceptability for BPT and medication. In addition, mothers in the ADHD group endorsed greater treatment acceptability for stimulant medication compared to mothers in the comparison group. The two groups of mothers did not differ in their ratings of acceptability for BPT. This difference also emerged on the alternate measure of treatment acceptability. Mothers in the ADHD group were over six times more likely to report that they would recommend stimulant medication over BPT, compared to mothers in the comparison group. An additional purpose was to investigate the influence that the professional affiliation or label (i.e., special education teacher, school psychologist, and pediatrician) of the consultant making a treatment recommendation may have on the acceptability of a proposed treatment for a child displaying characteristics of ADHD. The participants consisted of 63 members of school assistance teams recruited from southwestern school districts. Participants read a case description of a child displaying characteristics of ADHD and a treatment vignette which manipulated the type of treatment recommended and the occupational title of the consultant making the treatment recommendation. Participants then rated the acceptability of the treatments using the Abbreviated Acceptability Rating Profile. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant differences in treatment acceptability ratings, with medication receiving less acceptable ratings than the other treatments and that the medication treatment was considered less acceptable when recommend by a special education teacher than when recommended by either a school psychologist or a pediatrician. A statistically significant interaction was identified between the consultant recommending the treatment and the type of treatment. This study investigated whether the consultant making a treatment recommendation impacted the level to which the treatment was accepted. This is unique in that the influence of the consultant making a treatment recommendation has not previously been studied in the literature on treatment acceptability. This finding may be useful when considering the frequency in which consultants from different occupations make recommendations. Recommendations for future research in treatment acceptability are discussed.

Book excerpt: Background: Internet-based interventions (IBIs) to treat psychological disorders are available but none exist to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in college students, nor are any currently available for adults. Objective: Across two studies, we examined: (a) the feasibility of a proposed IBI for ADHD and participant perceptions regarding treatment acceptability and credibility, outcome expectancy, and intention to initiate treatment; and (b) whether algorithmically tailoring proposed treatment content based on self-reported functional impairment increases positive perceptions of an IBI for ADHD. Method: Across both studies, participants were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and provided with a descriptive preview of a proposed IBI and explanatory outlines of treatment module content. Participants were randomly assigned to either a tailored (i.e., received module outlines tailored to their specific deficits), control (i.e., non-tailored; received all module outlines), or random condition (i.e., received a varying number of module outlines). Participants in Experiment 1 were emerging adult college students (N = 196; aged 18-25) with current ADHD symptomatology. Participation in Experiment 2 was not limited to students specifically; instead the sample consisted of adults (N = 235; aged 18-35) with a prior ADHD diagnosis as well as current ADHD symptomatology and related impairment. Results: Analyses demonstrated that participants in the tailored and control conditions had moderate IBI acceptability ratings. Treatment preference was inconsistent across experiments: students in Experiment 1 preferred face-to-face (F2F) treatment, adults in Experiment 2 preferred IBIs, and among a subsample of only students in Experiment 2 there was no difference in preference. Most individuals who preferred F2F treatment also considered an IBI to be an acceptable method of treatment. Across both experiments, most individuals who preferred an IBI also preferred a guided over unguided IBI. Further, students in 2 the tailored condition reported higher IBI acceptability than those in the control condition (Experiment 1). Although the remaining outcomes of interest did not significantly differ between the tailored and control condition, the data showed small effects for several of these outcomes (i.e., treatment credibility and relevance). Conclusion: This research was the first to examine (a) factors related to an IBI for ADHD in college students, and (b) the effect of algorithmically tailoring content within the populations of both experiments. Lack of significant mean differences between the tailored and control conditions on several of the main outcomes of interest suggest that implementation of either method of treatment could prove effective. However, estimates of effect size suggest that our samples may have been underpowered. Further results, implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.
