Proposals for polarized proton acceleration for several high energy colliders have been developed. A partial Siberian Snake in the AGS has recently been successfully tested and full Siberian Snakes, spin rotators, and polarimeters for RHIC are being developed to make the acceleration of polarized beams to 250 GeV possible. This allows for the unique possibility of colliding two 250 GeV polarized proton beams at luminosities of up to 2 x 1032 cm−2 s−1.

Book excerpt: The question of whether polarized beams of 12 GeV or, preferably, higher energy can be produced at other existing or planned accelerators is explored. Sources of polarized H− ions suitable for injection into accelerators appear to be feasible with intensities in the milliampere range (an order of magnitude better than present performance at Argonne). This would be sufficient to produce polarized beams of intensities comparable (though somewhat weaker) to those of unpolarized beams in high energy accelerators and luminosities not more than a factor of about 10 lower than those for unpolarized beams in storage rings, such as the CERN ISR or ISABELLE, the 400 GeV storage accelerator system now under design at BNL. The major question, then, is whether it is possible to maintain polarization in these accelerators during the acceleration process and during storage in a storage ring.

Book excerpt: A series of experiments were conducted with the polarized proton beam of the Zero Gradient Synchrotron (ZGS) at Argonne National Laboratory in order to: (1) study the feasibility of adiabatically crossing intrinsic depolarizing resonances as an alternative to the fast tune-shift crossing presently used; (2) determine the amount of depolarization due to imperfection resonances which may be more important in alternating-gradient machines than in the ZGS; and (3) determine whether polarized protons can be stored for times long enough to allow polarized colliding beam experiments. Book excerpt: Experiments with polarized beams at RHIC will provide fundamental tests of QCD, and the electro-weak interaction reveal the spin structure of the proton. Polarization asymmetries and parity violation are the strong signatures for identification of the fundamental processes, which are otherwise inaccessible. Such experiments require the maximum available luminosity and therefore polarization must be obtained as an extra beam quality without sacrificing intensity. There are proposals to polarize the high-energy proton beam in the storage rings by the Stern-Gerlach effect or spin-filter techniques. But so far, the only practically available option is acceleration of the polarized beam produced in the source and taking care of polarization survival during acceleration and storage. Two major innovations -- the "Siberian Snake" technique for polarization preservation during acceleration and high current polarized proton sources make spin physics with the high-energy polarized beams feasible. The RHIC is the first high-energy collider, where the "Siberian Snake" technique allowed of polarized proton beam acceleration up-to 250 GeV energy. The RHIC unique Optically Pumped Polarized Ion Source produces sufficient polarized beam intensity for complete saturation of the RHIC acceptance. This polarization technique is based on spin-transfer collisions between a proton or atomic hydrogen beam of a few keV beam energy and optically pumped alkali metal vapors. From the first proposal and feasibility studies to the operational source this development can be considered as example of successful unification of individual scientists ingenuity, international collaboration and modern technology application for creation of a new polarization technique, which allowed of two-to-three order of magnitude polarized beam intensity increase sufficient for loading the RHIC to its full capacity for polarization studies.

At present the beam is used at four internal and three external target places. In addition, a polarized beam can be produced and accelerated at COSY. A colliding beams source, developed by a collaboration of the universities of Bonn, Erlangen, and Cologne is in operation [3]. The polarized H− beam delivered by this source is pre-accelerated in a cyclotron to 295 MeV/c and injected via stripping injection into the COSY ring. The polarization of the circulating proton beam in COSY is measured continuously during acceleration with the internal EDDA detector [4]. In this paper the methods to overcome depolarizing resonances in COSY are discussed and the progress to preserve polarization during acceleration is presented.
