Two of the four classrooms were traditional classes where paper and pencil methods were those most utilized for instructional purposes. Of these two classrooms, one teacher used Accelerated Reader extensively and with fidelity and the other did not use the program at all. The other two classrooms were part of the district's FLiP initiative where each student had their own laptop. Of these two classrooms, one teacher extensively used Accelerated Reader and one teacher did not. The purpose was to determine if Accelerated Reader should continue to be funded by the district. This would be determined through how extensively teachers used the program, and how using the program translated to student test scores and reading levels."--[portion of abstract].

The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between reading and writing. The research was guided b the following question: Is there a statistically significant correlation between the Accelerated reader Program scores and the scores received by fifth grade students on the Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing? The null hypothesis stated that there is not a statistically significant correlation in the scores of fifth grade students on the Alabama Direct Assessment Writing when the Accelerated Reader Program. Data was analyzed using a Pearson-r for two independent sample means. The .05 level of significance was accepted. The instruments used in this study were the Accelerated Reader Program (AR) and the Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing (ADAW) for fifth grade. There were approximately 70 students from the 2007-2008 school years who were taught using the AR program. These students also were examined using the ADAW. The researcher used random sampling to select 20 students from the data. Based on the findings, the null hypothesis was not rejected. So the researcher concluded that there is no correlation between the Accelerated Reader program and Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing. This chapter contains a summary, conclusions from the findings, and recommendations for practice and further research.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine if a significant difference existed based on the reading achievement of 3rd grade students as measured by the Mississippi Curriculum Test Reading Scaled Score of those students who utilized the Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader Software Management Program and those who did not participate in the program. The impact of gender and ethnicity on reading achievement and the relationship between the STAR Test for Assessment of Reading and the Mississippi Curriculum Test (MCT) as measures of reading achievement were also studied. The findings indicate students who participated in the Accelerated Reading Program achieved significantly higher reading scores than students who did not participate in the program. Within the Accelerated Reading Group, Caucasians earned significantly higher scores than the African-American/Other group. Female participants scored significantly higher scores than males. There was a strong association between the scores students on the STAR Test for Reading Assessment and the Mississippi Curriculum Test. The findings of this study indicated that gender, ethnicity, and the Accelerated Reading Program impacted MCT scores. There existed a strong association between scores on the Mississippi Curriculum Test and the scores on the STAR Test for Reading Assessment. Conclusions that emerged from the study suggest that Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader software when used in conjunction with the regular reading series seemed to have a positive impact on reading achievement. Recommendations for future research include investigating a possible gender bias in literature that could impact reading achievement and the impact of ethnicity on reading achievement.

Book excerpt: Research design is of critical importance in social research, despite its relative neglect in many methods resources. Early consideration of design in relation to research questions leads to the elimination or diminution of threats to eventual research claims, by encouraging internal validity and substantially reducing the number of alternative explanations for any finite number of research ′observations′. This new book: discusses the nature of design; gives an introduction to design notation; offers a flexible approach to new designs; looks at a range of standard design models; and presents craft tips for real-life problems and compromises. Most importantly, it provides the rationale for preferring one design over another within any given context. Each section is illustrated with case studies of real work and concludes with suggested readings and topics for discussion in seminars and workshops, making it an ideal textbook for postgraduate research methods courses. Based on the author′s teaching on the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre "Masters in Research Methods" at the University of Birmingham, and his ongoing work for the ESRC Researcher Development Initiative, this is an essential text for postgraduate researchers and academics. There is no book like Research Design on the market that addresses all of these issues in an easy to comprehend style, for those who want to design research and make critical judgements about the designs of others.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to determine a level of correlation between the use of accelerated reader and the amount of reading growth of a student in one school year. Research conducted on a 4th and 5th grade combination class of high achieving students was the sample of this research. To determine the level of correlation, STAR assessment was used and comparison was made to beginning and end results. Growth was measured in two areas: independent reading level and Grade level equivalency. In this research, the average grade level equivalency growth exceeded one year as well as the independent reading level exceeded one level. The amount of words read by individual students was also recorded by Accelerated Reader and compared to the growth made in the school year. A degree of growth was recorded in all students sampled and varied as compared to the amount of words read in the school year.

This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationships between value-added achievement in Tennessee public schools that include grades one through five and selected independent variables. The schools' use of the reading practice and monitoring software known as Accelerated Reader (AR) was of particular interest, as considerable research has suggested its effectiveness in raising achievement in reading and other subjects. Data were (1) the dependent variables, cumulative three-year average (1999, 2000, and 2001) Tennessee Value-Added Assessment scores in reading, language, math, science, and social studies; (2) independent variables school enrollment, per pupil annual expenditure for the system, percentage of students in the school eligible for free or reduced price meals, and percentage of minority students in the school; and (3) whether and to what extent AR had been purchased and implemented at each school since August1, 1999. Four levels of AR ownership/implementation were classified as (1) ownership without any "model classrooms," (2) having one or two model classrooms, (3) having three or more model classrooms, or (4) being certified as a "model school." Multiple regression analysis was used to search for statistically significant relationships between the independent demographic variables and AR use and the dependent variables of value-added achievement at the .05 level of significance, in the hope that a useful model could be designed for predicting value-added achievement from AR use, school enrollment, per pupil expenditure, free or reduced-price meal eligibility, and minority enrollment. Analysis of the data uncovered almost no significant relationships or school-level effects. In no instance was AR implementation a significant factor in relation to value-added achievement at the school level. While no useful regression model was developed from this study, one significant finding was that, in schools ending at grade six, school enrollment and especially minority enrollment are negatively correlated with math achievement.

Book excerpt: "In this study, the implementation of Accelerated Reader (AR), a computer-assisted supplemental reading program, was investigated as a research-based instructional strategy to assess whether it aided a high-performing, rural school district in meeting adequate yearly progress goals. The theoretical framework was based on Vygotsky's zone of proximal development. The overall research question for this quasi-experimental, longitudinal study was whether AR impacted students' reading change scores on a standardized test over a 2-year period. Reading achievement data of students in 4 elementary schools were gathered for 2 years. Data consisted of scores from the reading portion of the Measures of Academic Progress achievement test. Seventy-four students from 2 schools participated in AR for 2 years, while the control group -- 72 students from 2 other schools -- did not participate in AR. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, controlling for the effects of gender, special education status, gifted and talented education participation, Title I participation, and English language learner status. Findings showed the AR program had a significant direct impact on vocabulary score changes from 2009 to 2010 but a significant inverse impact on overall reading and vocabulary score changes from 2010 to 2011. Because the district under study is relying on AR to improve student outcomes, the project for this study was an evaluation report including an evaluation of the effectiveness of AR. An action plan was also provided to investigate the level of AR program fidelity to identify possible reasons for this study's unexpected results. Positive social change implications include providing research-based data to school administration to inform curriculum and professional development and improve student outcomes and school performance targets."--Preliminary page.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student achievement in reading comprehension has been an important topic for the past several years due to the importance of reading in education. School districts in South Carolina have had enormous amounts of pressure put on them to increase student reading comprehension through the implementation of SLOs and the Read to Succeed initiative. The School District of Pickens County has chosen to use the Accelerated Reader program in an attempt to help boost student reading comprehension. The quasi-experimental design was used during the quantitative research process to determine the effect of Accelerated Reader on student reading comprehension and student achievement. The measuring instrument used was student MAP test data from the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years. Overall RIT scores of students were compared during the Fall, Winter, and Spring administrations of MAP during both school years. The results of the study showed an increase in overall RIT for both the experimental and control groups, but there was no significant increase in student reading comprehension with students systematically exposed to Accelerated Reader and students that were not. Book excerpt: This four-week study examined the effect of using the Accelerated Reader® program with fidelity to the provided framework by Renaissance Place, the parent company of Accelerated Reader, on the reading comprehension scores of third, fourth, and fifth graders who scored below the 25th percentile on their Spring 2017 STAR Reading assessment, or if the student was new to the school their Fall 2017 STAR Reading assessment was used for placement. This study took place in North Dakota with fifteen participants. Students were given fifteen minutes of in class reading time and encouraged to read outside the classroom. Students kept track of their reading during the study. The STAR Reading assessment was given at the beginning and end of the four-week study to determine if the students' Accelerated Reader points earned had a positive effect on their comprehension. The majority of participants showed increased comprehension scores.
