Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Acadia: The Acadians in Story and Song I have been led to undertake the compilation of this little volume by a desire to enlist the interest of the public in the Acadian people of Louisiana. Brought up in their neighborhood and personally acquainted with many of them, my family learned to respect their modest virtues and to admire the many excellent qualities that distinguish them; the courage and honesty of the men and the sweetness, purity and fidelity of the women. In the period of great depression through which Louisiana has passed, all industries languished and these unsophisticated peasants felt the touch of want in homes where formerly reigned a rude plenty. It was then that it occurred to us that if their handwoven fabrics of cotton, grown by themselves, could be brought to the attention of the art-loving public, a remunerative field would be open for their industry. My sister, Mrs. Sarah Avery Leeds, devoted herself to the task of encouraging these humble workers, and, through the agency of the Christian Women's Exchange of New Orleans, found for them a market for their wares. These earnings have brightened many a cottage home. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acadians of Louisiana and Their Dialect Everything concerning French Louisiana seems at this time to possess an interest for the public; and it has been my purpose in some measure, to give an account of its language, its literature, its dialects, its folklore and its inhabitants. My papers published in the Transactions of our Modern Language Association have been so kindly received that I feel encouraged to continue my labors in a field vast and fertile but difficult to explore. The work to be done is, to a great extent, one of original research and of patient investigation, and it will require several years to present a tolerably complete tableau of picturesque French Louisiana. I now desire to present another feature of the picture by giving a brief sketch of the Acadians and their dialect. It may not be amiss to begin this study by taking a birds-eye view of the history of Acadia, from the settlement of the colony to the dispersion of the inhabitants. We shall then accompany Evangeline to the beautiful banks of the Teche and follow her canoe and that of Gabriel as they glide along its placid waters, leaving scarcely a ripple on the gentle stream which the names of the unhappy lovers have rendered immortal. I. Even before the time of John Cabot the Normans, the Bretons and the Basques are said to have known Newfoundland, and the first description of the shores of our United States was made in 1524 to a French King, Francis the First, by the Florentine Verrazano. Ten years later we see the bold son of St. Malo sailing on the broad St. Lawrence, which was to be the scene of so many conflicts for the possession of its rugged shores. In 1535 Jacques Cartier saw the future site of Quebec and Montreal and became acquainted with the Indian tribes, the future allies of the French in their contest with the English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Acadia: From Its First Discovery to Its Surrender to England by the Treaty of Paris When I had made some progress in my researches, the manuscripts of the late Professor Robb, of the University of New Brunswick, who had devoted a good deal of attention to Acadian history, were placed in my hands. Dr. Robb had made copious extracts from the manuscripts in the library of Quebec, and I derived much assistance from the result of his labors. I am indebted to Mr. E. Jack of Fredericton for much valuable aid, and to Mr. I. Allen Jack of St. J ohxi for manuscripts and maps. Mr. Thomas B. Aikens of Halifax is also entitled to my thanks for assistance courteously and promptly rendered on one occasion. But my thanks are especially due to Miss E. Wagstafi' of St. John, whose aid in making translations of difficult French manuscripts has been invaluable. This lady during the great St. John fire let her own property burn while she saved two of the precious volumes of manuscripts copied from the archives of Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acadia: Or, a Month With the Blue Noses As I have a sort of religion in literature, believing that no author can justly intrude upon the public without feeling that his writings may be of some benefit to mankind, I beg leave to apologize for this little book. I know, no critic can tell me better than I know myself, how much it falls short of what might have been done by an abler pen. Yet it is something - an index, I should say, to something better. The French in America may sometime find a champion. For my own part, I would that the gentler principles which governed them, and the English under William Penn, and the Dutch under the enlightened rule of the States General, had obtained here, instead of the narrower, the more penurious, and most proscriptive policy of their neighbors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Border: Acadia, the Home of Evangeline Yet this is lieutenant-colonel John Winslow, great grandson of 'one of the founders of the Plymouth Settlement. Could he forget that his ancestors fled from persecution, and came to this country to find peaceful homes? It was not his place to make reply, or reason why when receiving orders, however; and it seems that the task imposed was a distasteful one; as, at the time of the banishment, he earnestly expressed the desire to be rid of the worst piece of service 'he ever was in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from L'acadie, Vol. 1 of 2: Or, Seven Years' Explorations in British America L'acadie of the French, in North America, was understood to comprehend Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and part of Canada; it has been adopted as the title of this Work, as in the American Acadia were made the surveys and explorations, in which the author assisted, for the proposed Great Military Road to connect the British North American provinces. The present record of experiences, during seven years' service, will, it is to be hoped, be found to contain information which may tend to the advancement of Her Majesty's service in the Colonies, describe new fields for systematic colo nization, and also furnish subjects of varied interest for the general reader. Only a distance of six miles through barren and brush, and meadow, past fringes of old woods, and swamps of spruce and maple, over ledges, two brooks and a river. A very commonplace stretch of new road, but in passing over it several thousand times, in all seasons and all weathers, it became more charming, more to be seen, and learned, and admired. It would be a pleasant employment for me to fill volumes with the unwritten diaries of these journeys. However, I cele brate them with this little book, in the hope some readers will become interested, and thereby life en larged and curiosity stimulated to know more of the wonderful world so easily accessible to all dwellers in the country, and that, too, without money and without.
