Book Synopsis Music in Golden-Age Florence, 1250–1750 by : Anthony M. Cummings

This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of music in Florence from the late Middle Ages until the end of the Medici dynasty in the mid-eighteenth century. Florence is justly celebrated as one of the world’s most important cities. It enjoys mythic status and occupies an enviable place in the historical imagination. But its musico-historical importance is not as well understood as it should be. If Florence was the city of Dante, Michelangelo, and Galileo, it was also the birthplace of the madrigal, opera, and the piano. Music in Golden-Age Florence, 1250–1750 recounts Florence’s principal contributions to music and the history of how music was heard and cultivated in the city, from civic and religious institutions to private patronage and the academies. This book is an invaluable complement to studies of the art, literature, and political thought of the late-medieval and early-modern eras and the quasi-legendary figures in the Florentine cultural pantheon.

Book Synopsis Stravinsky and the Russian Traditions, Volume Two by : Richard Taruskin
Download or read book Stravinsky and the Russian Traditions, Volume Two written by Richard Taruskin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book undoes 50 years of mythmaking about Stravinsky's life in music. During his spectacular career, Igor Stravinsky underplayed his Russian past in favor of a European cosmopolitanism. Richard Taruskin has refused to take the composer at his word. In this long-awaited study, he defines Stravinsky's relationship to the musical and artistic traditions of his native land and gives us a dramatically new picture of one of the major figures in the history of music. Taruskin draws directly on newly accessible archives and on a wealth of Russian documents. In Volume One, he sets the historical scene: the St. Petersburg musical press, the arts journals, and the writings of anthropologists, folklorists, philosophers, and poets. Volume Two addresses the masterpieces of Stravinsky's early maturity—Petrushka, The Rite of Spring, and Les Noces. Taruskin investigates the composer's collaborations with Diaghilev to illuminate the relationship between folklore and modernity. He elucidates the Silver Age ideal of "neonationalism"—the professional appropriation of motifs and style characteristics from folk art—and how Stravinsky realized this ideal in his music. Taruskin demonstrates how Stravinsky achieved his modernist technique by combining what was most characteristically Russian in his musical training with stylistic elements abstracted from Russian folklore. The stylistic synthesis thus achieved formed Stravinsky as a composer for life, whatever the aesthetic allegiances he later professed. Written with Taruskin's characteristic mixture of in-depth research and stylistic verve, this book will be mandatory reading for all those seriously interested in the life and work of Stravinsky.

Book Synopsis The Polyphony of Saint Martial and Santiago de Compostela: Text by : Theodore Karp
Download or read book The Polyphony of Saint Martial and Santiago de Compostela: Text written by Theodore Karp and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Karp proposes a fundamental reinterpretation of two major repertories of twelfth-century sacred music, that associated with the long-destroyed abbey of Saint Martial de Limoges and the manuscript preserved in the Cathedral Archive of Santiago de Compostela. Together, these comprise the most important collection of polyphonic music before the celebrated School of Notre Dame. Scholars have disagreed about the rules for transcribing this early medieval music. Karp's commentary in Volume One, along with an edition of the music in Volume Two, offers a new set principles for the understanding of its harmony, rhythm, notation, and text underlay. Professor Karp's interpretation, though likely to prove controversial, is scrupulously and convincingly defended. The transcriptions themselves will be welcomed by performing musicians, to whom an important repertory now becomes readily available.
