Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays on seventeenth-century Virginia, the first such collection on the Chesapeake in nearly twenty-five years, highlights emerging directions in scholarship and helps set a new agenda for research in the next decade and beyond. The contributors represent some of the best of a younger generation of scholars who are building on, but also criticizing and moving beyond, the work of the so-called Chesapeake School of social history that dominated the historiography of the region in the 1970s and 1980s. Employing a variety of methodologies, analytical strategies, and types of evidence, these essays explore a wide range of topics and offer a fresh look at the early religious, political, economic, social, and intellectual life of the colony. Contributors Douglas Bradburn, Binghamton University, State University of New York * John C. Coombs, Hampden-Sydney College * Victor Enthoven, Netherlands Defense Academy * Alexander B. Haskell, University of California Riverside * Wim Klooster, Clark University * Philip Levy, University of South Florida * Philip D. Morgan, Johns Hopkins University * William A. Book excerpt: About four or five years ago, the Abstractor of these wills was employed to examine the titles to a large number of timber tracts, situated in Norfolk County, and to carry the same back to the original grants. The first obstacle he found in his way was the lack of an Index, for the years 1637 to 1753, and it was, therefore, necessary to index deeds and wills for that period. This index required the reading, page by page, of the first nineteen volumes in the Norfolk County Clerk's Office, and formed the basis upon which the present work was made. In using this Abstract, it is well to bear in mind the brief development of Norfolk County: Norfolk County was originally a part of Elizabeth City County, formed in 1634. About 1636 that portion of Elizabeth City County, lying on the south side of the James River, was formed into New Norfolk County. About 1637 New Norfolk County was divided into Upper Norfolk and Lower Norfolk Counties; Upper Norfolk County later became Nansemond County, and in 1691 Lower Norfolk was divided into Princess Anne County and Norfolk County. -- Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often compared unfavorably with colonial New England, the early Chesapeake has been portrayed as irreligious, unstable, and violent. In this important new study, James Horn challenges this conventional view and looks across the Atlantic to assess the enduring influence of English attitudes, values, and behavior on the social and cultural evolution of the early Chesapeake. Using detailed local and regional studies to compare everyday life in English provincial society and the emergent societies of the Chesapeake Bay, Horn provides a richly textured picture of the immigrants' Old World backgrounds and their adjustment to life in America. Until the end of the seventeenth century, most settlers in Virginia and Maryland were born and raised in England, a factor of enormous consequence for social development in the two colonies. By stressing the vital social and cultural connections between England and the Chesapeake during this period, Horn places the development of early America in the context of a vibrant Anglophone transatlantic world and suggests a fundamental reinterpretation of New World society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a county history that is extraordinarily rich in primary source materials, including abstracts of deeds from 1681 through the Revolutionary War period and, moreover, petitions, divisions of estates, wills, and marriages found in the records of Perquimans and adjacent North Carolina counties. Numbering in the tens of thousands, the records provide the names of all principal parties and related family members, places of residence and migration, descriptions of real and personal property, dates, boundary surveys, names of executors, witnesses, and appraisers, and dates of recording. Altogether, the index contains references to about 35,000 persons! Researchers should note that Perquimans was one of the original North Carolina precincts--with very close ties to the southeastern Virginia counties of Norfolk, Princess Anne, Nansemond, and Isle of Wight--and for many years had fluid boundaries with the North Carolina counties of Chowan, Gates, and Pasquotank.
