Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amos Wright unveils exhaustive research following two extended Scottish clans as they made their way across the ocean to the American frontier. Once they arrived, the two families made an impact on the colonials, the British, the French, the Spanish, and the American Indians. Some of the Scots were ambitious traders, some were representatives for the Indians, some were warriors, and one ended up as a chief. This annotated history delves into the harsh and often violent lives of Scottish traders living on the frontier of colonial America.

Book excerpt: The Houstouns of Georgia shares the history of one of the oldest families in Georgia, showcasing its influential members and reflecting on the effect of one family throughout the state's history. Established by Sir Patrick Houstoun, who accompanied James Oglethorpe and helped him lay the foundations of the colony, the Houstoun family has called Georgia home since its inception. Over two hundred years after its founding, the author of The Houstouns of Georgia traces her own lineage back to the Houstoun family in her heavily researched account of the family’s presence in Georgia from its founding onward. The Georgia Open History Library has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes, the fourth and fifth, complete the series of biographical sketches of students at Princeton University (the College of New Jersey in colonial times). They cover pivotal years for both the nation and the College. In 1784, the war with England had just ended. Nassau Hall was still in a shambles following its bombardment, and the College was in financial distress. It gradually regained financial and academic strength, and the Class of 1794 graduated in the year of the death of President John Witherspoon, one of the most important early American educators. The introductory essay by John Murrin, editor of the series since 1981, explores the postwar context of the College. The two volumes contain biographies of 354 men who attended with the classes of 1784 through 1794 and two other students whose presence at the College in earlier years has only now been demonstrated. During these years Princeton accounted for about an eighth of all A.B. degrees granted in the United States. It was the young republic's most "national" college, although it had nearly lost its New England constituency and was instead beginning to draw nearly 40 percent of its students from the South. Originally published in 1991. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1960, this biography examines the life of James Jackson, a general in the Revolutionary War and later governor, congressman, and senator to Georgia. Jackson advocated strict construction of the Constitution, states' rights, and the welfare of the common man. He was a dominant figure in the affairs of Georgia during the last decade of his life and was at the center of the Yazoo controversy, where he worked for the repeal of the land sales. Foster's portrayal shows Jackson as a strong personality with a fiery disposition who played an important role in the history of the state.
