This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not intended for budding mathematicians. It was created for a math program in which most of the students in upper-level math classes are planning to become secondary school teachers. For such students, conventional abstract algebra texts are practically incomprehensible, both in style and in content. Faced with this situation, we decided to create a book that our students could actually read for themselves. In this way we have been able to dedicate class time to problem-solving and personal interaction rather than rehashing the same material in lecture format.

Book Synopsis Abstract Algebra: Introduction To Groups, Rings And Fields With Applications (Second Edition) by : Clive Reis
Download or read book Abstract Algebra: Introduction To Groups, Rings And Fields With Applications (Second Edition) written by Clive Reis and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition covers essentially the same topics as the first. However, the presentation of the material has been extensively revised and improved. In addition, there are two new chapters, one dealing with the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups and the other a brief introduction to semigroup theory and automata. This book is appropriate for second to fourth year undergraduates. In addition to the material traditionally taught at this level, the book contains several applications: Polya-Burnside Enumeration, Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares, Error-Correcting Codes, and a classification of the finite groups of isometries of the plane and the finite rotation groups in Euclidean 3-space, semigroups and automata. It is hoped that these applications will help the reader achieve a better grasp of the rather abstract ideas presented and convince him/her that pure mathematics, in addition to having an austere beauty of its own, can be applied to solving practical problems.Considerable emphasis is placed on the algebraic system consisting of the congruence classes mod n under the usual operations of addition and multiplication. The reader is thus introduced — via congruence classes — to the idea of cosets and factor groups. This enables the transition to cosets and factor objects to be relatively painless. In this book, cosets, factor objects and homomorphisms are introduced early on so that the reader has at his/her disposal the tools required to give elegant proofs of the fundamental theorems. Moreover, homomorphisms play such a prominent role in algebra that they are used in this text wherever possible.

Download or read book Abstract Algebra written by Thomas Judson and published by Orthogonal Publishing L3c. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract Algebra: Theory and Applications is an open-source textbook that is designed to teach the principles and theory of abstract algebra to college juniors and seniors in a rigorous manner. Its strengths include a wide range of exercises, both computational and theoretical, plus many non-trivial applications. The first half of the book presents group theory, through the Sylow theorems, with enough material for a semester-long course. The second half is suitable for a second semester and presents rings, integral domains, Boolean algebras, vector spaces, and fields, concluding with Galois Theory.

Book Synopsis Abstract Algebra by : Stephen Lovett
Download or read book Abstract Algebra written by Stephen Lovett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a student of mathematics studies abstract algebra, he or she inevitably faces questions in the vein of, "What is abstract algebra" or "What makes it abstract?" Algebra, in its broadest sense, describes a way of thinking about classes of sets equipped with binary operations. In high school algebra, a student explores properties of operations (+, −, ×, and ÷) on real numbers. Abstract algebra studies properties of operations without specifying what types of number or object we work with. Any theorem established in the abstract context holds not only for real numbers but for every possible algebraic structure that has operations with the stated properties. This textbook intends to serve as a first course in abstract algebra. The selection of topics serves both of the common trends in such a course: a balanced introduction to groups, rings, and fields; or a course that primarily emphasizes group theory. The writing style is student-centered, conscientiously motivating definitions and offering many illustrative examples. Various sections or sometimes just examples or exercises introduce applications to geometry, number theory, cryptography and many other areas. This book offers a unique feature in the lists of projects at the end of each section. the author does not view projects as just something extra or cute, but rather an opportunity for a student to work on and demonstrate their potential for open-ended investigation. The projects ideas come in two flavors: investigative or expository. The investigative projects briefly present a topic and posed open-ended questions that invite the student to explore the topic, asking and to trying to answer their own questions. Expository projects invite the student to explore a topic with algebraic content or pertain to a particular mathematician’s work through responsible research. The exercises challenge the student to prove new results using the theorems presented in the text. The student then becomes an active participant in the development of the field.
Book Synopsis A History of Abstract Algebra by : Israel Kleiner
Download or read book A History of Abstract Algebra written by Israel Kleiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does nothing less than provide an account of the intellectual lineage of abstract algebra. The development of abstract algebra was propelled by the need for new tools to address certain classical problems that appeared insoluble by classical means. A major theme of the book is to show how abstract algebra has arisen in attempting to solve some of these classical problems, providing a context from which the reader may gain a deeper appreciation of the mathematics involved. Mathematics instructors, algebraists, and historians of science will find the work a valuable reference.

Book Synopsis Group Theory by : Mildred S. Dresselhaus
Download or read book Group Theory written by Mildred S. Dresselhaus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, class-tested book was refined over the authors’ 30 years as instructors at MIT and the University Federal of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil. The approach centers on the conviction that teaching group theory along with applications helps students to learn, understand and use it for their own needs. Thus, the theoretical background is confined to introductory chapters. Subsequent chapters develop new theory alongside applications so that students can retain new concepts, build on concepts already learned, and see interrelations between topics. Essential problem sets between chapters aid retention of new material and consolidate material learned in previous chapters.
