This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical methods for investigating semiconductors and the theoretical description of optical processes have always been an important part of semiconductor physics. Only the emphasis placed on different materials changes with time. Here, a large number of papers are devoted to quantum dots, presenting the theory, spectroscopic investigation and methods of producing such structures. Another major part of the book reflects the growing interest in diluted semiconductors and II-IV nanosystems in general. There are also discussions of the fascinating field of photonic crystals. `Classical' low dimensional systems, such as GsAs/GaAlAs quantum wells and heterostructures, still make up a significant part of the results presented, and they also serve as model systems for new phenomena. New materials are being sought, and new experimental techniques are coming on stream, in particular the combination of different spectroscopic modalities.

Download or read book Low-Dimensional Structures in Semiconductors written by A.R. Peaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a sequence of reviews presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'Low Dimensional Structures in Semiconductors ... from Basic Physics to Applications.' This was part of the International School of Materials Science and 1990 at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Sicily. Technology held in July Only a few years ago, Low Dimensional Structures was an esoteric concept, but now it is apparent they are likely to playa major role in the next generation of electronic devices. The theme of the School acknowledged this rapidly developing maturity.' The contributions to the volume consider not only the essential physics, but take a wider view of the topic, starting from material growth and processing, then prog ressing right through to applications with some discussion of the likely use of low dimensional devices in systems. The papers are arranged into four sections, the first of which deals with basic con cepts of semiconductor and low dimensional systems. The second section is on growth and fabrication, reviewing MBE and MOVPE methods and discussing the achievements and limitations of techniques to reduce structures into the realms of one and zero dimensions. The third section covers the crucial issue of interfaces while the final section deals with devices and device physics.

Book Synopsis Luminescence Anomaly of Two-Dimensional Excitons in GaAs Coupled Quantum Wells by : T. Fukuzawa
Download or read book Luminescence Anomaly of Two-Dimensional Excitons in GaAs Coupled Quantum Wells written by T. Fukuzawa and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of a phase transition into an ordered state in a two-dimensional (2D) system of spatially separated electron-hole pairs has been suggested by Lozovik and Yudson and Shevchenko independently. Their proposal has recently been extended by Fukuzawa to a system formed by two GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells subject to an electric field. The long exciton lifetimes that can be achieved in such a semiconductor heterostructure, as well as the small Coulomb screening due to the interaction between oriented dipoles, make it particularly suitable for the study of phase transitions, be it like the one proposed by Lozovik and Yudson, and Shevchenko, or a Kosterliz-Thouless transition of a neutral Coulomb gas. The photoluminescence (PL) of GaAs-GaO. 7A10.3As structures consisting of two 50A quantum wells separated by a 40A barrier has shown a dramatic temperature dependence when an electric field is applied perpendicular to the well interfaces. The polarization of carriers and the energy shifts induced by the field lead to a PL spectrum consisting of two distinct peaks, one of which is associated with spatially direct interband transitions and another, much more intense, that involves spatially-separated electrons and holes (type-11 exciton).

Book Synopsis Introduction to Nanophotonics by : Sergey V. Gaponenko
Download or read book Introduction to Nanophotonics written by Sergey V. Gaponenko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-08 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanophotonics is where photonics merges with nanoscience and nanotechnology, and where spatial confinement considerably modifies light propagation and light-matter interaction. Describing the basic phenomena, principles, experimental advances and potential impact of nanophotonics, this graduate-level textbook is ideal for students in physics, optical and electronic engineering and materials science. The textbook highlights practical issues, material properties and device feasibility, and includes the basic optical properties of metals, semiconductors and dielectrics. Mathematics is kept to a minimum and theoretical issues are reduced to a conceptual level. Each chapter ends in problems so readers can monitor their understanding of the material presented. The introductory quantum theory of solids and size effects in semiconductors are considered to give a parallel discussion of wave optics and wave mechanics of nanostructures. The physical and historical interplay of wave optics and quantum mechanics is traced. Nanoplasmonics, an essential part of modern photonics, is also included.
