Book excerpt: The equilibrium constants for the formation of some t-alkyl tetroxides and the rate constants for irreversible decay of the tetroxides have been measured by electron spin resonance spectroscopy at low temperatures. The equilibrium constant appears to be virtually independent of the nature of the alkyl groups. It is concluded that differences in the rate of constants for chain termination by t-peroxy radicals at ambient temperatures are due chiefly to the differences in rate constants for irreversible tetroxide decomposition. The activation parameters for this reaction indicate that it occurs by one bond rather than two bond scission. (Author).

Book excerpt: The four propagation and three termination rate constants for the co-oxidation of cumene and Tetralin were determined at 30C and 56C. The secondary tetralylperoxy radical is about four times as reactive in hydrogen atom abstraction as the tertiary cumylperoxy radical. The rate constant for termination by reaction of a tetralylperoxy and a cumylperoxy radical has about one quarter of the value for termination by two tetralylperoxy radicals. Rate constants for the transfer of hydroperoxidic hydrogen to peroxy radicals were measured. This reaction exhibits an exceptionally large deuterium isotope effect. A possible explanation for the high value is suggested. The absolute rate constants at 30C. for hydrogen atom abstraction from toluene, ethylbenzene, cumene, and Tetralin by cumylperoxy, tetralylperoxy, and 9,10-dihydroanthracyl-9-peroxy radicals were measured. Book excerpt: Lipid oxidation in food systems is one of the most important factors which affect food quality, nutrition, safety, color and consumers' acceptance. The control of lipid oxidation remains an ongoing challenge as most foods constitute very complex matrices. Lipids are mostly incorporated as emulsions, and chemical reactions occur at various interfaces throughout the food matrix. Recently, incorporation of healthy lipids into food systems to deliver the desired nutrients is becoming more popular in the food industry. Many food ingredients contain a vast array of components, many of them unknown or constituting diverse or undefined molecular structures making the need in the food industry to develop effective approaches to mitigate lipid oxidation in food systems. This book provides recent perspectives aimed at a better understanding of lipid oxidation mechanisms and strategies to improve the oxidative stability of food systems. - Five chapters on naturally-derived antioxidants that focus on applications within food systems - Contributors include an international group of leading researchers from academic, industrial, and governmental entities - Discusses the oxidative stability of enzymatically produced oils and fats - Provides overviews on the complexities of lipid oxidation mechanisms, and emulsion systems most suseptible to rapid lipid oxidation

This book was released on 1968 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rate constants were measured for hydrogen abstraction from four aralkanes and addition to two aralkenes by five secondary and one primary peroxy radical. These rate constants appear to show a slight dependence on the structure of the attacking peroxy radicals which may be due to the inductive effects of the substituents on the radical. The secondary and primary peroxy radicals are generally about 2-4 times more reactive than tertiary peroxy radicals in abstraction and 4-8 times more reactive in addition. The lower reactivity of tertiary peroxy radicals is probably due to steric factors. (Author).

Book excerpt: The free-radical chemistry of DNA had been discussed in some detail in 1987 in my book The Chemical Basis of Radiation Biology. Obviously, the more recent developments and the concomitant higher level of understanding of mechanistic details are missing. Moreover, in the living cell, free-radical DNA damage is not only induced by ionizing radiation, but free-radical-induced DNA damage is a much more general phenomenon. It was, therefore, felt that it is now timely to review our present knowledge of free-radical-induced DNA damage induced by all conceivable free-radical-generating sources. Originally, it had been thought to include also a very important aspect, the repair of DNA damage by the cell’s various repair enzymes. Kevin Prise (Cancer Campaign, Gray Laboratory, L- don) was so kind to agree to write this part. However, an adequate description of this strongly expanding area would have exceeded the allocated space by much, and this section had to be omitted. The directors of the Max-Planck-Institut für Strahlenchemie (now MPI für Bioanorganische Chemie), Karl Wieghardt and Wolfgang Lubitz, kindly allowed me to continue to use its facilities after my retirement in 2001. Notably, our - brarian, Mrs. Jutta Theurich, and her right-hand help, Mrs. Rosemarie Schr- er, were most helpful in getting hold of the literature. I thank them very much. Without their constant help, this would have been very difficult indeed.

In the self reaction of t-alkylperoxy radicals the ratio of the rates of alkoxy radical diffusion from the cage to combination in the cage is essentially independent of the size of the t-alkyl group. The 1,1-diphenylethoxy radical undergoes a 1,2-phenyl shift to yield the 1-phenyl-1-phenoxyethyl radical more rapidly that it undergoes beta-scission. (Author).

Book excerpt: Even though ozone has been applied for a long time for disinfection and oxidation in water treatment, there is lack of critical information related to transformation of organic compounds. This has become more important in recent years, because there is considerable concern about the formation of potentially harmful degradation products as well as oxidation products from the reaction with the matrix components. In recent years, a wealth of information on the products that are formed has accumulated, and substantial progress in understanding mechanistic details of ozone reactions in aqueous solution has been made. Based on the latter, this may allow us to predict the products of as yet not studied systems and assist in evaluating toxic potentials in case certain classes are known to show such effects. Keeping this in mind, Chemistry of Ozone in Water and Wastewater Treatment: From Basic Principles to Applications discusses mechanistic details of ozone reactions as much as they are known to date and applies them to the large body of studies on micropollutant degradation (such as pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors) that is already available. Extensively quoting the literature and updating the available compilation of ozone rate constants gives the reader a text at hand on which his research can be based. Moreover, those that are responsible for planning or operation of ozonation steps in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants will find salient information in a compact form that otherwise is quite disperse. A critical compilation of rate constants for the various classes of compounds is given in each chapter, including all the recent publications. This is a very useful source of information for researchers and practitioners who need kinetic information on emerging contaminants. Furthermore, each chapter contains a large selection of examples of reaction mechanisms for the transformation of micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fuel additives, solvents, taste and odor compounds, cyanotoxins. Book excerpt: This book addresses the phenomenon of biological autoluminescence (also known as ultraweak photon emission, UPE, biochemiluminescence, or biophotons) and deals with a very broad spectrum of subjects, ranging from basic observational studies to molecular mechanisms, free-radical processes, physics of electron excitation and photon emission, as well as detection techniques. The chapter topics include UPE in plants, animals, and the human body; microorganisms and subcellular structures; and model systems, illustrating its high prevalence. Several sections of the book provide some backstory, with emphasis on methodology, unresolved questions, and existing controversies. The authors raise and discuss complex, potentially divisive aspects: Are there any reasons to assume the existence of non-chemical interaction in biological systems? Can research results in the field of mitogenetic radiation, delayed luminescence, and oxychemiluminescence of model systems, be correctly interpreted? What does the future hold for this area of research? Altogether, this publication gives the reader a thorough overview of biological autoluminescence (UPE, biophotonics) research, making it ideal for students and researchers who are new to the area as well as those who are specializing in it.
