Book excerpt: The equilibrium constants for the formation of some t-alkyl tetroxides and the rate constants for irreversible decay of the tetroxides have been measured by electron spin resonance spectroscopy at low temperatures. The equilibrium constant appears to be virtually independent of the nature of the alkyl groups. It is concluded that differences in the rate of constants for chain termination by t-peroxy radicals at ambient temperatures are due chiefly to the differences in rate constants for irreversible tetroxide decomposition. The activation parameters for this reaction indicate that it occurs by one bond rather than two bond scission. (Author).

Book excerpt: The four propagation and three termination rate constants for the co-oxidation of cumene and Tetralin were determined at 30C and 56C. The secondary tetralylperoxy radical is about four times as reactive in hydrogen atom abstraction as the tertiary cumylperoxy radical. The rate constant for termination by reaction of a tetralylperoxy and a cumylperoxy radical has about one quarter of the value for termination by two tetralylperoxy radicals. Rate constants for the transfer of hydroperoxidic hydrogen to peroxy radicals were measured. This reaction exhibits an exceptionally large deuterium isotope effect. A possible explanation for the high value is suggested. The absolute rate constants at 30C. for hydrogen atom abstraction from toluene, ethylbenzene, cumene, and Tetralin by cumylperoxy, tetralylperoxy, and 9,10-dihydroanthracyl-9-peroxy radicals were measured. These rate constants appear to show a slight dependence on the structure of the attacking peroxy radicals which may be due to the inductive effects of the substituents on the radical. The secondary and primary peroxy radicals are generally about 2-4 times more reactive than tertiary peroxy radicals in abstraction and 4-8 times more reactive in addition. The lower reactivity of tertiary peroxy radicals is probably due to steric factors. (Author).

Obviously, the more recent developments and the concomitant higher level of understanding of mechanistic details are missing. Moreover, in the living cell, free-radical DNA damage is not only induced by ionizing radiation, but free-radical-induced DNA damage is a much more general phenomenon. It was, therefore, felt that it is now timely to review our present knowledge of free-radical-induced DNA damage induced by all conceivable free-radical-generating sources. Originally, it had been thought to include also a very important aspect, the repair of DNA damage by the cell’s various repair enzymes. Kevin Prise (Cancer Campaign, Gray Laboratory, L- don) was so kind to agree to write this part. However, an adequate description of this strongly expanding area would have exceeded the allocated space by much, and this section had to be omitted. The directors of the Max-Planck-Institut für Strahlenchemie (now MPI für Bioanorganische Chemie), Karl Wieghardt and Wolfgang Lubitz, kindly allowed me to continue to use its facilities after my retirement in 2001.
