Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigative Criminal Procedure in Focus provides today’s law students with a thorough understanding of investigative criminal procedure. Using an innovative approach to teach the law, its pedagogical features not only facilitate the mastery of complex legal concepts, but provide hands-on exercises that give students the tools they need to succeed. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides a general introduction to the world of criminal procedure. Chapter 1 sets the stage by explaining the differences between substantive criminal law and criminal procedure as well as the differences between the investigative and adjudicative stages of the criminal justice process. Chapter 2 focuses on the sources of criminal procedure law. Part II of the text begins the study of investigative criminal procedure. Chapters 3 to 6 each focus on a specific aspect of Fourth Amendment jurisprudence; Chapter 7 focuses on interrogation law; and Chapter 8 addresses eyewitness identifications. Professors and Students will benefit from: The Focus Casebook Series structure that uses author-written text to explain doctrine, openly and clearly. Many criminal procedure issues lend themselves to not only doctrinal discussion of the law, but also to broader policy-oriented topics. Berger takes a balanced approach that allows professors to choose which policy issues to cover in class. Thoughtfully selected cases, framed by introductory questions and post-case analysis, that teach students key concepts. Real Life Applications, Applying the Rules, and Criminal Procedure in Practice hypotheticals, frequently based on real cases, that provide opportunities for critical analysis and application of concepts covered in the chapters. A discussion in Chapter 1 of competing values in criminal procedure as well as the roles of race, class, and gender in criminal law. Complete and thoughtful discussion Fourth Amendment including: What constitutes a Fourth Amendment search and seizure Who is covered by the Fourth Amendment The state action and standing requirements (Chapter 3) Probable cause and warrants (Chapter 4) Exceptions to the warrant requirement (Chapter 5) The exclusionary rule (Chapter 6)

This book is indispensable for core courses in criminal investigation. Chapters include a variety of helpful charts, tables, and illustrations, as well as discussion questions that provide focus on the most important points. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal Investigation on the Street presents investigative principles and techniques—and applies them to solving real-world crimes—in an engaging, student-friendly style centered on the Investigative Triangle: legal aspects, evidence, and behavioral analysis. Students and instructors alike will benefit from this book’s comprehensive coverage and accessible writing style. Along with the Investigative Triangle model, which provides a solid framework for approaching investigations, students will also learn about Criminal Investigative Analysis, a range of behavior-based services and strategies to help solve crimes. Chapters 1–7 (Section I) present the principles and techniques of criminal investigation—history and theory, legal background, forensics, crime scene, witnesses and informants, interviews and interrogations—including a chapter on crime analysis and Criminal Investigative Analysis. Chapters 8–13 (Section II) apply these principles and techniques to specific types of crime, beginning with assault and death investigations and a separate chapter on culpable homicide. Section II also covers sex crimes; theft, burglary, robbery, and arson; enterprise and white-collar crime, and terrorism. The book is illustrated throughout with a variety of Exhibits: photographs and drawings, flowcharts, facsimiles of police documents, and other instructive visuals. Each chapter begins with an engaging vignette, some based on high-profile news articles and others drawn from the author’s extensive experience. Interactive features—Case Focus, You Call It, and You Write It—occur at strategic points in every chapter, challenging students to answer questions and apply concepts to actual cases and fictional scenarios. Each chapter ends with a return to the Investigative Triangle, assessing how it applies to the chapter’s main topics. Chapters 1–7 (Section I) each include a list of Important Cases (court decisions relevant to the chapter’s key concepts). At the end of every chapter (Sections I and II), the Investigate Further feature provides an annotated list of readings, films, and other resources appropriate for class projects, term papers, and special assignments. Each chapter concludes with review questions and a chapter summary. This book is geared to students in the Criminal Investigation course at both two- and four-year institutions, and will appeal to those aspiring to a career in any field related to criminal investigation.

Book excerpt: Investigative Criminal Procedure: Doctrine, Application, and Practice by Jens David Ohlin is designed to respond to the changing nature of teaching law by offering a flexible approach with an emphasis on application. Each chapter focuses on Supreme Court cases that articulate the constitutional requirements, while call-out boxes outline statutes or state constitutional law provisions that impose more stringent rules. Short problem cases, also in boxes, ask students to apply these principles to new fact patterns. Each chapter ends with a Practice and Policy section that delves deeper into the conceptual and practical obstacles to the realization of procedural rights in the daily practice of criminal law. The result is a modular format, presented in a lively visual style, which recognizes and supports the diverse pedagogical approaches by today's leading criminal procedure professors. Professors and students will benefit from: A mixture of classic and new Supreme Court cases on criminal procedure Call-out boxes that outline statutory requirements Call-out boxes that focus on more demanding state law rules Problem cases that require students to apply the law to new facts A Practice and Policy section which allows a deeper investigation of doctrinal and policy controversies, but whose placement at the end of each chapter maximizes instructors' freedom to focus on the materials that most interest them Notes and questions, inviting closer examination of doctrine and generate class discussion Innovative pedagogy, emphasizing application of law to facts (while still retaining enough flexibility so as to be useful for a variety of professors with different teaching styles) Logical organization and manageable length Open, two-color design with appealing visual elements (including carefully-selected photographs)

Book excerpt: Designed as an introductory text for college students majoring in criminal justice administration or for police training programs, this text covers the principles of police investigations and their legal aspects. In dealing with techniques of criminal investigation, the volume emphasizes the need for meticulous adherence to rules of law and ethical practices during the entire investigative process. The types of evidence an investigator encounters are examined as well as the importance of evidentiary rules, admissibility, quantum of evidence principles, and an investigator's relationships with both suspects and witnesses. Factors necessary for a legal arrest are outlined, as are the investigator's managerial responsibilities, the basic objectives and processes of investigation, and the major concepts of investigative procedure. Practical guides, such as an information reporting system model, a program for a closed-loop investigation system, and strategies for organizing and conducting an investigation, are provided. A section on investigative reports provides instructions for developing and organizing a good field notebook in a variety of styles, suggested questioning methods for eliciting desired information, and a summary of ways to prepare and write an investigative report. (various examples of report types and styles and lists of their advantages and disadvantages are included.) After studying the text, students should be able to identify important information sources, select interview and interrogation sites according to established criteria, understand the basic steps in a crime scene investigation and special steps for certain types of investigations, and record crime scene data with necessary photographs and videotape support. Special chapters deal with the suspect--his modus operandi and identification--and the victims--their interviews, roles in victim identification, and ways to assist them. The final chapters cover ensuring the quality of an investigation and court testimony. Study topics and questions, references, annotated bibliographies, and an index are included.
