Book excerpt: Abraham, whom the apostle Paul calls the "father of us all" (Rom 4:16), was a central figure in Judaism from the outset and came to be important in Christianity and Islam. The Abraham tradition is an issueof narrative and counter-narrative, memory and counter-memory. Moreover, Abraham's family is brought in as a network of meaning to express opposition, antithesis or common ground within and between different religious movements. The contributions to this volume discuss the presentation and reception of Abraham's family in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The topics cover Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Second Temple writings, New Testament, Rabbinic literature, Greek, Latin and Syriac church fathers, as well as Jewish medieval interpretation and a twelfth-century Arabic travel report of a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Book excerpt: From God's surprising call to Abraham to leave home and family to God's enigmatic commands that he evict one son and sacrifice another, Genesis 12-25 is one of the most dramatic stories of the Old Testament. In an inviting style that showcases his literary discernment, theological sophistication, and passion for the biblical text, Terence E. Fretheim guides readers through the intricacies of the plot. Abraham, called "the father of a multitude" (Gen 17:5), lives up to his name as the patriarch of three major religious traditions. Fretheim examines Abraham's family and assesses the significant roles it plays across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition, Fretheim contributes to the increasingly important interreligious dialogue surrounding Abraham by examining the continuing conversation among Muslims, Christians, and Jews about the place of Hagar and Ishmael in Abraham's family. Relating biblical narrative to theological concerns, Fretheim wrestles with such controversial concepts as God's selection of an elect people, the gift of land and other promises, the role of women and outsiders, the character of God, and the suffering of innocents. Throughout the text, Fretheim frames the narrative as rooted in the trials of family and faith that define Abraham as the father of three religions.

Following the alphabet, a poem identifies the letter topic while sidebar text provides background information. C could be the challah that my bubbe used to braid, or C could be the chicken soup, when I was sick she made, or chocolate coins on Chanukah we added to our coffers. But I say C should be for Chai "To Life" and all it offers. This joyful celebration of family and heritage includes the meaning behind celebrations such as the Festival of Lights, Passover, and Sukkot; important names and stories from the Old Testament; and how modern-day families continue to celebrate their heritage. Book excerpt: Genealogy is, widely considered to be, one of the fastest growing hobbies in the U.S. We have become consumed with constructing our family tree in an attempt to trace our lineage. Fortunately, the Bible does an excellent job helping us trace the ancestry of our faith family. Pastor and author Jacob Armstrong takes an in-depth look at our faith lineage focusing specifically on the messy family dynamics found in the book of Genesis. As we begin to understand the life stories of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Esau we find that their pattern looks a lot like ours—we are called, we mess up, and God continues to redeem us. Find out how your “messy family” fits into God’s family and how you are a part of God’s plan for the world. Additional components for a six-week study include a DVD featuring pastor and author Jacob Armstrong and a comprehensive Leader Guide. Also available for your church is a helpful guide to small groups titled The Connected Life: Small Groups that Create Community. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham was the same as we are today. He never dreamed of being called by God. Suddenly, while he and his relatives were in Chaldea worshipping other gods, the God of glory appeared to him. This appearing was a great attraction, enabling him to come out of his fallen background and accept God's calling. Although Abraham answered God's call, he did not do so immediately nor absolutely. Although he learned to live by faith, he had serious failures along the way. He followed God in a way not unlike us all. Eventually, he was brought to know grace for the fulfillment of God's purpose. In a remarkable commentary on the life of Abraham from the book of Genesis, Witness Lee presents Abraham as a genuine man, not unlike us all, fallen, but called by God. Like him, we have seen "the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" and have been attracted to follow Him. Like him, we must learn the lessons of faith through trials, testing, and failure, in order to enter into the promises and blessings of God. Abraham--Called by God, taken from the Life-study of Genesis, presents a unique and vital view of the father of our faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Lord’s recovery during the past five hundred years the church’s knowledge of the Lord and His truth has been continually progressing. This monumental and classical work by Brother Witness Lee builds upon and is a further development of all that the Lord has revealed to His church in the past centuries. It is filled with the revelation concerning the processed Triune God, the living Christ, the life-giving Spirit, the experience of life, and the definition and practice of the church. In this set Brother Lee has kept three basic principles that should rule and govern every believer in their interpretation, development, and expounding of the truths contained in the Scriptures. The first principle is that of the Triune God dispensing Himself into His chosen and redeemed people; the second principle is that we should interpret, develop, and expound the truths contained in the Bible with Christ for the church; and the third governing principle is Christ, the Spirit, life, and the church. No other study or exposition of the New Testament conveys the life nourishment or ushers the reader into the divine revelation of God’s holy Word according to His New Testament economy as this one does.

This book was released on 2013-12-22 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah Vorys and his relatives are part of the largest Dutch group within the modern USA; namely, the “Van Voorhees” family. In 1660 C.E., Isaiah’s ancestral grandfather, Steven Coerts Van Voorhees, migrated from the Province of Drenthe, Netherlands to the Flatlands area of Brooklyn, Long Island, NY. Thus began the “roots” of a huge family who quickly branched out to become pioneers, early settlers, and prominent citizens within many U.S. States, Counties, and Cities from 1660 C.E. to present day. This book concentrates primarily on the one branch of Steven Coerts Van Voorhees’ descendants which leads to (and beyond) Isaiah Vorys, who was born in 1750 in Somerset County, New Jersey. At first glance, some of the heretofore unpublished genealogy charts associated with Isaiah may appear to be of sole interest to the readers who are related to him. However, any reader with a desire to learn more about United States History stands to gain insight into “the formation of the early USA”, by carefully reading each page of this book, because the author adds historical details associated with the “coast-to-coast” residential locations of Isaiah Vorys’ ancestors, descendants, and of his collateral relatives, beginning in 1660 C.E. and ending in 2013 C.E. Throughout an interesting 84 years of life, Isaiah Vorys actively participated in the betterment of his communities. For example, in 1776, he enlisted in a New Jersey Revolutionary War Regiment and participated in several battles as part of General George Washington’s “Continental Army” until 1781, even though Washington could not afford to pay this Regiment for their services. From 1808 to 1830, Isaiah Vorys was among the early pioneers who developed the City of Columbus, Ohio, while operating his “White Horse Tavern”. Even Isaiah’s death was interesting because the body exhumed from his gravesite in 1857 C. E. turned out not to be his remains! Isaiah Vorys’ seven children (adopting the VORYS, VORIS and VORHES surnames) were early settlers within various parts of western Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and in northern Indiana between 1784 C. E. and 1835 C.E. Isaiah’s descendants married spouses with surnames: HALLAM (early settlers of Washington Co., PA and of Clinton Co., OH); HITE; COCHENOUR; BIBLER (all three of these families were early settlers of Fairfield Co., OH); and MONROE (early settlers of Delaware Co., OH who descended from the MONROE/MUNROE “Minutemen” who fought in the “Battle of Lexington”, MA in 1775).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fresh look at the Gospel of Matthew highlights the unique contribution that Matthew's rich and multilayered portrait of Jesus makes to understanding the connection between the Old and New Testaments. Patrick Schreiner argues that Matthew obeyed the Great Commission by acting as scribe to his teacher Jesus in order to share Jesus's life and work with the world, thereby making disciples of future generations. The First Gospel presents Jesus's life as the fulfillment of the Old Testament story of Israel and shows how Jesus brings new life in the New Testament.
