Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Servant of the People You will recall that during the dark days of the Civil War Lincoln's attention was called to certain records. These records seemed to indicate that one Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston was the mother of five boys who had enlisted in the serv ice of their country and all of whom had been killed in battle. This information so stirred the tender heart of Lincoln that he wrote to Mrs. Bixby one of the most sympathetic letters ever written. 80 beautiful was this letter that it has become known thruout the world as a gem of literature. It was to this letter which Dr. Barton referred when he said Lincoln had blundered, for by his investigation he disclosed that only four of Mrs. Bixby's sons had served their coun try; that two of these had died in battle and that one of the other two sons had deserted to the enemy. He proved conclusively that two sons, one of whom had not been in the service, lived in Massachusetts for many years after the close of the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Downfall of American Slavery HE character of Abraham Lincoln, as the years pass, becomes grander and more heroic; and, as is usual when a commanding figure slowly rises conspicuous in the history of humanity, traditions and myths are already beginning to cluster around his illustrious personality. The simplest truth is always best; and the simpler and more direct the biographical sketch of Abraham Lincoln, the more deeply will his image be impressed upon the heart of that common people Whom he loved so well and of which he was the noblest representative. In this book it has been the author's aim to present such a picture of Lincoln and his times as shall leave upon the mind of the reader a definite and authoritative likeness of the man whose name is now enrolled highest among the types of our national ideals.relati was 3. In regard to the truthfulness and impartiality of the work, the author will only say that, while acknowledging frankly that all his convictions and sympathies have been with the cause of liberty and loyalty, he has not, consciously, done injustice to any. Book excerpt: A Man of the People A Drama of Abraham Lincoln by Thomas Dixon HISTORICAL NOTE While the popular conception of Lincoln as the Liberator of the Slave is true historically, there is a deeper view of his life and character. He was the savior, if not the real creator, of the American Union of free Democratic States. His proclamation of emancipation was purely an incident of war. The first policy of his administration was to save the Union. To this fact we owe a united Nation to-day. It is this truth of history which I try to make a living reality in my play. The scenes relating to the issues of our National life have been drawn from authentic records. The plot of the action is based on the letter of Colonel John Nicolay to Major Hay, dated August 25, 1864, in which the following opening paragraph is found: "Hell is to pay. The New York politicians have got a stampede on that is about to swamp everything. Raymond and the National Committee are here to-day. R. thinks a Commission to Richmond is about the only salt to save us; while the President sees and says it would be utter ruination. The matter is now undergoing consultation. Weak-kneed damned fools are in the movement for a new candidate to supplant the President. Everything is darkness, doubt, and discouragement." No liberty has been taken with an essential detail of history in the development of the action except to slightly shift the dates of two incidents for dramatic unity. In neither case does the change of date affect the validity of the scene as used. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. The President of the United States cannot appoint the members of his Cabinet, nor any Federal officer whatever, without the con sent and endorsement of the Senate he is but the executor of the national will as declared by the national representatives the servant, in fine, of the servants of the people. It is therefore of the first importance that' the Chief Magistrate to be chosen in this crisis should be one who has given ample guarantees that he will carry out the will of the majority; not a mere representative or tool of a clique of political schemers, nor an ambitious man, ready, at a favourable opportunity, to thwart or control the national decision. The President pos sesses to a limited extent the power of initiative he can recommend to Congress the introduction of measures, and veto any legislative act which, in his judgment, may be detrimental to the interests of the Republic. It is this recommendatory power, shap ing and directing as it were the national will, which invests the election of mr. Lincoln's successor with such overwhelming importance; for recon struction of the Union means naught else than the new-birth of the Republic - the re-enacting of the fundamental law, upon and within which the whole assemblage of States is henceforward to be governed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 5: The Progressive State From the University Point of View In the colder North, the products of the soil were meager, insufficient in themselves to sustain life or furnish food for a numerous people. The forests, dense and im penetrable, were not adapted to encourage the knowledge Of one tribe by another, but they afforded to man a means of sustenance in the perils Of the chase. A nomadic race of hunters was the result - barbarous and ignorant warriors, lusty for battle, hardy and courageous, who sought a better field for their exploits-and an escape from the prison of the woods.
