Book excerpt: Filling in a portion of Lincoln’s political career that few are aware of, this engaging travelogue details Lincoln’s twelve-day trip through Massachusetts as a young, aspiring Illinois politician campaigning for Zachary Taylor, a slaveowner and the Whig candidate for president in 1848. Moving swiftly, William F. Hanna follows Lincoln from town to town, explaining why Lincoln supported a slaveholder and describing one of Lincoln’s earliest attempts to appeal to an audience beyond his home territory. Hanna provides excellent context on the politics of the era, particularly the question of slavery, both in Massachusetts and nationwide, and he features the people Lincoln met and the cities or towns in which he spoke. Lincoln stumped for Taylor in Worcester, New Bedford, Boston, Lowell, Dorchester, Chelsea, Dedham, Cambridge, and Taunton. He gave twelve speeches in eleven days to audiences who responded with everything from catcalls to laughter to applause. Whatever they thought of Lincoln’s arguments, those who saw him were impressed by his unusual western style and remembered his style more than the substance of his talks. Meticulously researched, Abraham among the Yankees invites readers to take an East Coast journey with a thirty-nine-year-old Lincoln during election season in 1848 to see how Massachusetts audiences responded to the humorous, informal approach that served Lincoln well during the rest of his political career.

Book excerpt: The present revision of "The Every-day Life of Abraham Lincoln" was the last literary labor of its author. He had long wished to undertake the work, and had talked much of it for several years past. But favorable arrangements for the book's republication were not completed until about a year ago. Then, though by no means recovered from an attack of pneumonia late in the previous winter, he took up the task of revision and recasting with something of his old-time energy. It was a far heavier task than he had anticipated, but he gave it practically his undivided attention until within three or four weeks of his death. Only when the last pages of manuscript had been despatched to the printer did he yield to the overwhelming physical suffering that had been upon him for a long time past. His death occurred at Santa Barbara, California, on May 11. Francis Fisher Browne was born at South Halifax, Vermont, on December 1, 1843. His parentage, on both sides, was of the purest New England stock. Early in his childhood, the family moved to Western Massachusetts, where the boy went to school and learned the printing trade in his father's newspaper office at Chicopee. As a lad of eighteen, he left the high school in answer to the government's call for volunteers, serving for a year with the 46th Massachusetts Regiment in North Carolina and with the Army of the Potomac. When the regiment was discharged, in 1863, he decided to take up the study of vilaw. Removing to Rochester, N.Y., he entered a law office in that city; and a year or two later began a brief course in the law department of the University of Michigan. He was unable to continue in college, however, and returned to Rochester to follow his trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address in Commemoration of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln: Delivered at the 337th Dinner of the New England Club An anonymous writer has said that, "as mountains mostly run in chains or clusters, crossing the plains at wider or narrower intervals, in like manner there are periods in History when great men appear in clusters also." This is true of the history of our own country. A patriotic American, wishing to discuss the great worth and noble deeds of any individual among the distinguished men of our country's history, will find a galaxy of names from which to select. Of the Revolutionary period, Washington, Hamilton, the Adamses, Jefferson, Madison, Putnam, Greene, Stark, Knox, and Marion. Of the period following the Revolution and ending with the Great Rebellion, Webster, Clay, Benton, Jackson, Calhoun, John Quincy Adams, and others of equal worth but lesser note. Of that crucial period, the men and events of which are fresh in the recollection of those who do me the honor to listen, when the life of the Nation was saved by an outpouring of blood and treasure such as the world had never known, Grant, Sherman, Farragut, Sheridan, Thomas, Seward, Chase, Stanton, Sumner, Fessenden, Beecher, and others less renowned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln in New England Abraham Lincoln first set foot on New England soil in 1848. He had grown as do the oaks, by the inherent expansion of the right royal law of life. This erstwhile lad of the forest, scion of Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois, rail-splitter, Mississippi boatman, frontier storekeeper, deputy surveyor, country lawyer, state assembly-man, had in fact grown to be one of the most distinguished citizens of Illinois and a representative of that state in the National House of Representatives. He had taken an active part in the work of the Thirtieth Congress and, when the near approach of the coming presidential election enlivened its closing days, he had taken the floor and spoken so well in favor of "Old Rough and Ready" that his speech was reported the country over by the Whig press.
