Book Synopsis Long History, Deep Time by : Ann McGrath
Download or read book Long History, Deep Time written by Ann McGrath and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast shape-shifting continent of Australia enables us to take a long view of history. We consider ways to cross the great divide between the deep past and the present. Australia’s human past is not a short past, so we need to enlarge the scale and scope of history beyond 1788. In ways not so distant, these deeper times happened in the same places where we walk today. Yet, they were not the same places, having different surfaces, ecologies and peoples. Contributors to this volume show how the earth and its past peoples can wake us up to a sense of place as history – as a site of both change and continuity. This book ignites the possibilities of what the spaces and expanses of history might be. Its authors reflect upon the need for appropriate, feasible timescales for history, pointing out some of the obstacles encountered in earlier efforts to slice human time into thematic categories. Time and history are considered from the perspective of physics, archaeology, literature, western and Indigenous philosophy. Ultimately, this collection argues for imaginative new approaches to collaborative histories of deep time that are better suited to the challenges of the Anthropocene. Contributors to this volume, including many leading figures in their respective disciplines, consider history’s temporality, and ask how history might expand to accommodate a chronology of deep time. Long histories that incorporate humanities, science and Indigenous knowledge may produce deeper meanings of the worlds in which we live.
Download or read book Bluff Rock written by Katrina Schlunke and published by Fremantle Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The past is a problem for us. We know certain events happened, sometimes exactly when and yet our longing for certainty cannot be satisfied ... we tell stories about where we come from and who we are. We change these stories sometimes minutely, sometimes radically ... This is an original and courageous book. Schlunke, who grew up in the New England area, takes this one story — the massacre(s) of Aborigines at Bluff Rock, in New England during the 1840s — and looks at the many ways it is organised as a memory of Indigenous/non-Indigenous relations. Schlunke breaks new ground as she probes the 'hidden histories' of Indigenous-settler encounters and addresses herself urgently to the problems of 'history' in Australia."

Book Synopsis Political Theory and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by : Duncan Ivison
Download or read book Political Theory and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples written by Duncan Ivison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book focuses on the problem of justice for indigenous peoples and the ways in which this poses key questions for political theory: the nature of sovereignty, the grounds of national identity and the limits of democratic theory. It includes chapters by leading political theorists and indigenous scholars from Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Canada and the United States. One of the strengths of this book is the manner in which it shows how the different historical circumstances of colonization in these countries nevertheless raise common problems and questions for political theory. It examines ways in which political theory has contributed to the past subjugation and continuing disadvantage faced by indigenous peoples, while also seeking to identify resources in contemporary political thought that can assist the 'decolonisation' of relations between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.

Book Synopsis Citizenship in Diverse Societies by : Will Kymlicka
Download or read book Citizenship in Diverse Societies written by Will Kymlicka and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-03-16 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible, in a modern, pluralistic society, to promote common bonds of citizenship while at the same time accommodating and showing respect for ethnocultural diversity? 'Citizenship' and 'diversity' have been two of the major topics of debate in both democratic politics and political theory over the past decade. Much has been written about the importance of citizenship, civic identities, and civic virtues for the functioning of liberal democracies, and the need to accommodate the ethnocultural, linguistic, and religious pluralism that is a fact of life in most modern states. By and large, however, these two topics have been largely discussed in mutual isolation. Much of the writing on the issues of both citizenship and diversity remains rather abstract and general and disconnected from the specific issues of public policy and institutional design. Citizenship in Diverse Societies examines the specific points of conflict and convergence between concerns for citizenship and diversity in democratic societies and reassesses and refines existing theories of 'diverse citizenship' by examining these theories in the light of actual practices and policies of pluralistic democracies.
