Book Synopsis Abigail and John Adams by : G. J. Barker-Benfield
Download or read book Abigail and John Adams written by G. J. Barker-Benfield and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the many years that they were separated by the perils of the American Revolution, John and Abigail Adams exchanged hundreds of letters. Writing to each other of public events and private feelings, loyalty and love, revolution and parenting, they wove a tapestry of correspondence that has become a cherished part of American history and literature. With Abigail and John Adams, historian G. J. Barker-Benfield mines those familiar letters to a new purpose: teasing out the ways in which they reflected—and helped transform—a language of sensibility, inherited from Britain but, amid the revolutionary fervor, becoming Americanized. Sensibility—a heightened moral consciousness of feeling, rooted in the theories of such thinkers as Descartes, Locke, and Adam Smith and including a “moral sense” akin to the physical senses—threads throughout these letters. As Barker-Benfield makes clear, sensibility was the fertile, humanizing ground on which the Adamses not only founded their marriage, but also the “abhorrence of injustice and inhumanity” they and their contemporaries hoped to plant at the heart of the new nation. Bringing together their correspondence with a wealth of fascinating detail about life and thought, courtship and sex, gender and parenting, and class and politics in the revolutionary generation and beyond, Abigail and John Adams draws a lively, convincing portrait of a marriage endangered by separation, yet surviving by the same ideas and idealism that drove the revolution itself. A feast of ideas that never neglects the real lives of the man and woman at its center, Abigail and John Adams takes readers into the heart of an unforgettable union in order to illuminate the first days of our nation—and explore our earliest understandings of what it might mean to be an American.

It details Michael Jackson's role in the Apocalypse and it destroys and recreates reality through the use of magic words and ice cream. Storyline: It is October 1999, and Cyrus Dresden is an unemployed philosophy professor who was recently released from the state mental facility. He is desperate to win back the love and respect of his ex-fiancé, Sara Lundy when he receives a call from an old friend, Adam Butcher, who needs his help. Amanda has also awoken with a vision where she realizes that mankind has been involved in a supernatural game that ends at the same time as her predicted Apocalyptic timeline. Cyrus leads the trio on a philosophical and scientific quest to understand our place in the universe before the strike of midnight on the millennial New Year’s Eve. However, the trio does not realize that their combined destinies have been prophesized in secret church documents written decades before they were born. To prevent the prophecies from being realized, Cardinal Francisco Allemande captures Sara Lundy and plans to hold her hostage in his private office in the Vatican until after the New Year. Cyrus must embark on the hero’s journey and lead a group of friends with the help of an army of Michael Jackson impersonators to rescue Sara from the Vatican and discover the clues to winning the most critical game in human history before time runs out

Book Synopsis Typographies of Performance in Early Modern England by : Claire M. L. Bourne
Download or read book Typographies of Performance in Early Modern England written by Claire M. L. Bourne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typographies of Performance in Early Modern England is the first book-length study of early modern English playbook typography. It tells a new history of drama from the period by considering the page designs of plays by Shakespeare and others printed between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. It argues that typography, broadly conceived, was used creatively by printers, publishers, playwrights, and other agents of the book trade to make the effects of theatricality—from the most basic (textually articulating a change in speaker) to the more complex (registering the kinesis of bodies on stage)—intelligible on the page. The coalescence of these experiments into a uniquely dramatic typography that was constantly responsive to performance effects made it possible for 'plays' to be marketed, collected, and read in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a print genre distinct from all other genres of imaginative writing. It has been said, 'If a play is a book, it is not a play.' Typographies of Performance in Early Modern England shows that 'play' and 'book' were, in fact, mutually constitutive: it was the very bookishness of plays printed in early modern England that allowed them to be recognized by their earliest readers as plays in the first place.
