How she changed the stigma, shame and despair into triumph. How she became knowledgeable about this disease. Then, her mission was to share that knowledge to advance the understanding of HIV/AIDS in her community. Wanda has discovered in all her years working in the field of HIV education; people's behavior never really changed. This disease is still 100 percent preventable. This present generations of individuals who have grown up with this disease. They have no fear of the virus. They have not witnessed a person dying from AIDS. The major challenges and hurdles in the late seventies and eighties are still present today. People still need to be educated regarding HIV - about risky behavior, changing your lifestyle and about living risk free and safe. It is Wanda's hope that this booklet can and will be helpful in increasing your knowledge about the HIV virus (the virus that causes AIDS). It will help you as a parent, guardian and caregiver to develop a stronger open communication with your children regarding HIV. Based on personal knowledge, Wanda London believes that everyone should have a basic level of HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Know this fact: HIV is 100% preventable.

Book excerpt: The science of the virus and its effects and the clinical approaches to its treatment and transmission prevention are placed in the context of the history and epidemiology of the HIV-AIDS pandemic. Each organ system of the body is explored as to manifestations of the disease, treatment now and in the future, as well as what the disease has taught us about the immune response. The science of epidemiology, which is so important in allowing for tracking of the disease and potential limitation of transmission, is another aspect of AIDS explored in detail. The pandemic manifests differently in different parts of the world, and the relevance of the volume is enhanced by its international group of contributors. No other text provides the historical and epidemiological context of this disease along with an update of diagnosis and treatment. The underlying science and epidemiology of AIDS are not neglected, so the student or clinician who is treating patients with AIDS can gain a full understanding of HIV/AIDS in individual patients and in their communities.

Book excerpt: It has now been 25 years since the apocryphal report in the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report dated June 5, 1981 entitled, “Pneumocystis Pneumonia - Los Angeles”, which announced what was to become HIV/AIDS. HIV has now affected virtually all countries that have looked for it and has had a devastating impact on the public health and medical care infrastructure around the world. HIV/AIDS has also disproportionately affected nations with the least capacity to confront it, especially the developing world nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the emerging republics of Eastern and Central Asia. The pandemic, unlike any other disease of our time, has had profound impacts on the practice of public health itself: bringing affected communities into decision making; demanding North-South partnerships and collaborations; and changing the basic conduct of clinical and prevention trials research. While much has been written in scholarly publications for medical, epidemiologic and disease control specialists, there is no comprehensive review of the public health impact and response to HIV/AIDS in the developing world. This edited volume seeks to systematically describe the emergence and form of the epidemics (epidemiology), the social, community and political response, and the various measures to confront and control the epidemic, with varying levels of success. Of particular importance are strategies that appear to have been useful in ameliorating the epidemic, while contrasting the situation in a neighboring country or region where contrasting prevention or care initiatives have had a deleterious outcome. Common to all responses has been the international multi-sectoral response represented by the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and the Gates Foundation, among others, to promote HIV pharmacologic therapy in resource-poor settings. The chapter authors will explore the political challenges in meeting HIV/AIDS prevention and care in concert with the public health realities in specific country and regional context.

Book excerpt: Substantial financial and human resources from donors, governments, civil society organisations and the private sector have been committed to fighting HIV/AIDS since it was first discovered in Africa. As more resources are allocated, there is a growing need for countries to properly account for these funds. HIV/AIDS Financing and Spending in Eastern and Southern Africa measures the financial response to the pandemic in five selected countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania/Zanzibar and Zambia). This study: Analyses the national budgets of these countries from an HIV/AIDS perspective; Investigates and evaluates how the HIV/AIDS resources are disbursed, for what activities and for whose benefit; Makes recommendations to state and non-state actors on effective and efficient HV/AIDS financing and spending. This publication emerges out of an extensive multi-country resource tracking project conducted by the AIDS Budget Unit of the Governance and AIDS Programme of the Africa-wide democracy institute, Idasa.
