Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin books are among the most numerous surviving artifacts of the Late Antique, Mediaeval, and Renaissance periods in European history; written in a variety of formats and scripts, they preserve the literary, philosophical, scientific, and religious heritage of the West. The Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography surveys these books, with special emphasis on the variety of scripts in which they were written. Palaeography, in the strictest sense, examines how the changing styles of script and the fluctuating shapes of individual letters allow the date and the place of production of books to be determined. More broadly conceived, palaeography examines the totality of early book production, ownership, dissemination, and use. The Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography includes essays on major types of script (Uncial, Insular, Beneventan, Visigothic, Gothic, etc.), describing what defines these distinct script types, and outlining when and where they were used. It expands on previous handbooks of the subject by incorporating select essays on less well-studied periods and regions, in particular late mediaeval Eastern Europe. The Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography is also distinguished from prior handbooks by its extensive focus on codicology and on the cultural settings and contexts of mediaeval books. Essays treat of various important features, formats, styles, and genres of mediaeval books, and of representative mediaeval libraries as intellectual centers. Additional studies explore questions of orality and the written word, the book trade, glossing and glossaries, and manuscript cataloguing. The extensive plates and figures in the volume will provide readers wtih clear illustrations of the major points, and the succinct bibliographies in each essay will direct them to more detailed works in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of nine introductory essays sets the process of annotating texts back into the various contexts from which the notes originally derive -- the scholar's study, the teacher's schoolroom, etc. -- and examines the ways in which annotations were inscribed into the rolls and codices. The last three essays (Part Three. "Select Annotated Texts") pay special attention to the copious tradition of annotations in Archaic Lyric and Iambic (Pindar, Bacchylides, Alcaeus, and Hipponax), Hellenistic Poetry (Callimachus and Theocritus), and Prose authors, distilling from the jejune entries the complex relationships between commentaries and the annotations. The Corpus proper, containing the Marginal and Interlinear Notes from the Greek and Latin literary papyri from Egypt, is arranged alphabetically by author (from Aeschylus to Xenophon) and the papyri themselves identified by their "Mertens-Pack 3" number (MP3); the Adespota, both poetry and prose, follow. The section with Latin is considerably shorter, as might be expected in the Greek-speaking East, but the notations to Cicero, Juvenal, and the texts of Roman law are, nonetheless, more often in Greek than Latin. The volume closes with a comprehensive list of annotated papyri (from MP3 23 to 2866, plus a few un-catalogued items) that summarizes the information contained in the Catalogue; a bibliography and a concordance between edition and MP3 number, and indices (Greek words, Latin words, hybrid Greek/Latin forms, and a general index of authors and topics covered) finish off the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians, classicists, and archeologists will welcome Professor Turner's lucid introduction to the field of Greek papyrology. The relatively recent rediscovery of Greek (and Latin) texts on papyrus has made possible greatly improved editions of classic works and has provided a deeper understanding of life in classical times. Professor Turner considers papyrus as a writing material, goes on to the problems of excavating for papyri, editing a papyrus text, determining its author and owners, and so on. He discusses the relation of papyri to Greek literature as well as to various types of non-literary documents, and he assesses various contributions papyri have made to ancient history. A list of the principal editions of papyri is included. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 1053 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains over fifty passages of Latin from 200 BC to AD 900, each with translation and linguistic commentary. It is not intended as an elementary reader (though suitable for university courses), but as an illustrative history of Latin covering more than a millennium, with almost every century represented. Conventional histories cite constructions out of context, whereas this work gives a sense of the period, genre, stylistic aims and idiosyncrasies of specific passages. 'Informal' texts, particularly if they portray talk, reflect linguistic variety and change better than texts adhering to classicising norms. Some of the texts are recent discoveries or little known. Writing tablets are well represented, as are literary and technical texts down to the early medieval period, when striking changes appear. The commentaries identify innovations, discontinuities and phenomena of long duration. Readers will learn much about the diversity and development of Latin.
