Book excerpt: Stop making a living and start making a life with The New Retirementality When Mitch Anthony first presented the concept of a new way of thinking about retirement in 2000, it was novel and many critics didn't buy into it. Originally written to get the attention of baby boomers who were approaching 55, Mitch started a revolution by showing people why they needed to have a new attitude about retirement–a "new retirementality." More than a decade later, most of us are facing a very different retirement reality than previous generations–failing pensions, an endangered social security system, and inadequate savings. We have been forced to face the reality of a retirement that may never happen, or one that will take place much later in life than ever expected. Circumstances are redefining what it means to retire, and The New Retirementality, Fourth Edition is your roadmap. While most books focus on a "number," this reliable resource shows you that attitude is also an essential part of the equation–if you want to succeed you need both means and meaning. Includes new research and studies on the latest retirement realities, as well as introduce readers to Mitch's newest concept, investing toward a greater Return on LifeTM Discusses what it means to retire on purpose, the expanding role of work in retirement, and how to self-direct your future by becoming your own benefits director Written by top financial planner Mitch Anthony Filled with engaging anecdotes and inspirational suggestions, this book will motivate you to rethink the meaning of retirement and put you in a better position to enjoy the new retirementality you deserve.

Book excerpt: Stop making a living and start making a life with The New Retirementality™ In 2000, when top financial philosopher and bestselling author Mitch Anthony first presented a new way of thinking about retirement, it was novel, and many critics didn't buy into it. Originally written to get the attention of baby boomers, Mitch ended up starting a revolution by showing us that everything we had read about retirement was wrong—we needed a "new retirementality." Fast-forward to today, when most of us are facing a very different retirement: fewer pensions, escalating healthcare costs, and inadequate savings. For many of us, retirement may never happen, or it will take place much later than we expected. Far from being full of doom and gloom, The New Retirementality, Fifth Edition, offers a message of hope, along with a roadmap for navigating the choppy waters of retirement planning. While most books focus on Return on Investment, Mitch shows us that Return on Life™—living the best life possible with the resources we have—is a more fulfilling and achievable approach. New to this edition: The latest research and studies, as well as a discussion of Life-Centered Planning™—a unique approach to financial and retirement planning, focused on individual goals and needs instead of the outmoded one-size-fits-all approach. Explores the role of purpose in retirement planning, including the expanding role of work in retirement, and why it can take three or four tries to get retirement right. Features the New Retirementality Profile, the ROL Index for helping you analyze and reflect on how you are using your money toward improving your life, and worksheets to help you get organized. Filled with engaging anecdotes, practical advice, and inspirational suggestions, this book will motivate you to rethink what retirement means—and put you in a better position to enjoy the new retirementality you deserve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Retirement Docs’ Proven Prescription for Living a Happy, Fulfilling Rest of Your Life Over the years, Dr. Fritz Fraunfelder and Dr. Jim Gilbaugh have seen thousands of their patients respond differently to the challenges of retirement: some rose to new heights; others hit new lows. The doctors began to wonder, How do some people maintain their vitality, interests, and zest for life in retirement while others became distant, even depressed? Is there a magic formula for retiring well? To find the answer, they designed a comprehensive study involving more than one thousand patients. The results were surprising but clear. Financial planning is not as important to a fulfilling retirement as many may think—the psychological experience is just as crucial. The happiest retirees shared eight key traits; all of them were able to: * plan ahead * maintain a positive attitude * accept change * lean on their support network * have a sense of purpose * keep a healthy lifestyle * engage in leisure activities * enjoy some expression of spirituality Retirement Rx evaluates the reader and provides guidelines for how to develop each key characteristic. The good news? These essential skills can be strengthened, even acquired from scratch, whether the reader is just starting to plan for retirement, is in the early years, or is a seasoned retiree. The first scientificallybacked bulletproof prescription, this book is the most concrete guide to a happy retirement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When shall I retire? How "golden" will my "parachute" be? Will I be happy as a retired person? How can I make the most of my retirement? In the last decade, employers have turned increasingly to the "Golden Parachute" or "Golden Handshake" - inducements to employees to retire earlier. Questions about the effects of these plans, and retirement in general, are mounting, yet few answers are forthcoming. The age of retirement for many has decreased from 65 to the midyears, and these individuals will spend as much time in retirement as they spent in the workforce. This shifting scene necessitates a continuing search for information about the hows and whys, and the effects, of early retirement. In this highly informative study, the authors of Early Retirement: Promises and Pitfalls, scholars in sociology, psychology, and education, look at the experiences of retirees from a large urban area. Many of these persons (average age, 59) were painfully confronted in middle age with the breakdown of heavy industries in the Northeast; others happily sought retirement to resolve their disenchantment with a given routine. By examining the adjustment of these people to this new phase of their lives, the study found that most who retire adjust relatively quickly and positively to retirement, using it as an opportunity for leisure or other work activities. For a minority, however, there are pitfalls and disappointments, which the book discusses in detail. Using numerous vivid case illustrations, and drawing from both questionnaire and interview data, the book provides an inside view of what it is like to face retirement from primarily white-collar occupations. A wide range of reactions emerged about boththe process of retirement (e.g., how those slated for retirement were treated, how long they had to prepare) and its outcome - being a retired person. Moreover, the book offers a portrait, not only of the people themselves as retirees, but also of their attitudes about aging, reflections on their careers, aspirations for a full life, and comments on the changing society - as well as candid reactions from their spouses. This outstanding book speaks both to the professional on aging and to the public at large - those who have retired, are thinking about retiring, or are providing retirement programs or services for retired persons.

Book excerpt: Valle Egypt is a provocative story of financial elder abuse and the demise of a sixty-year family farm. Valle Egypt is a case study that affords readers the opportunity to better understand the serious consequences of financial elder abuse while providing an increased awareness of how to mitigate this escalating problem. Using a personal family story as a vehicle for learning, the author presents readers with a preparatory tool kit, which includes educational components such as fiduciary duty, mental capacity, legal trusts and estate planning. The story presents a legal case, calling attention to the mental capacity of an aged parent, undue influence by children, and breach of fiduciary duty by the trustees.Illustrative of how unethical business practices may impact untold generations to follow, this case study highlights how financial elder abuse, perpetrated by a family member, was aided by a lawyer employed by a prestigious law firm.
