Book Synopsis Fighting with the Empire by : Steve Marti
Download or read book Fighting with the Empire written by Steve Marti and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians often characterize their military history as a march toward nationhood, but in the first eighty years of Confederation they were fighting for the British Empire. From 1867 to 1947, war or threat of war forced Canadians to define and redefine their relationship to Britain and to one another. As French Canadians, Indigenous peoples, and those with roots in Continental Europe and beyond mobilized in support of imperial war efforts, their participation challenged the imagined homogeneity of Canada as a British nation. From soldiers overseas to workers on the home front – and from the cultural ties of imperial pageantry to the bonds of race and class – Fighting with the Empire examines the paradox of a national contribution to an imperial war effort. This insightful collection of connected case studies explores the middle ground between narratives that celebrate the emergence of a nation through warfare and those that equate Canadian nationalism with British imperialism.

Book Synopsis Death to Beauty by : Eugene M. Helveston
Download or read book Death to Beauty written by Eugene M. Helveston and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Dr. Alan Scott sought to selectively weaken eye muscles to treat strabismus (when one or both eyes are misaligned) without surgery. After failed attempts with other agents, Scott developed a method to stabilize the bacteria that causes botulism, culminating in a drug that eventually became known as Botox. In Death to Beauty, Eugene M. Helveston, MD, follows the unlikely story of botulism's 1817 discovery in contaminated German sausages, to its use in military and research facilities, to Scott, an ophthalmologist who aimed to safely use the drug in humans. Scott struggled alone as an unknown in the pharmaceutical industry, searching for clinical trial financing and FDA approval, which he achieved at a fraction of the billions big pharma usually spends to bring a drug to market. Eventually, the company Allergan bought him out, capitalizing on the possibilities for cosmetic uses. Scott's formula was renamed "Botox" and reached annual sales in the billions. After the sale, Scott received no further compensation from Botox sales and remained the same unassuming man. A fascinating walk through the intricate history of how the world's deadliest toxin starting as a treatment for crossed eyes became a routine tool for the cosmetic industry, Death to Beauty will make you rethink success, beauty, and deadly bacteria.

These articles highlight the movement of ideas, people, policies, and practices across various cultures and societies and explore the relations and connections, and spaces created by these movements. These articles make clear that historical phenomena from travel to music cannot be contained and explained within just one national setting. The volume offers, further, a number of theoretical and methodological articles that provide insights into the concept of transnational history and the approach of intercultural transfer studies. Last but not least, the volume also includes a number of review articles. These review articles provide an examination of books central to teaching transnational history as well as a historiographical exploration of the impact of transnational history on the field of sports history.

Book Synopsis United States Army in World War Ii by : Harry L. Coles, Albert K. Weinberg
Download or read book United States Army in World War Ii written by Harry L. Coles, Albert K. Weinberg and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1986 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A documentary history with brief narrative introductions illustrating the evolution of civil affairs policy and practice in the Mediterranean and European theaters. Most important of all, in World War II soldiers became governors in a much broader sense than ever before—so much more than was foreseen that the Army's specialized training proved scant preparation for perhaps the most important phase of their role. They became not merely the administrators of civilian life for the Army's immediate needs but at the same time the executors and at times even, by force of circumstances, the proposers of national and international political policy. This broader role arose from the fact that in World War II the Allies strove to realize from the very beginning of occupation political aims that had usually not been implemented during war or, if during war at all, not until active hostilities had ended. Thus, in enemy countries civil affairs officials were immediately to extirpate totalitarian governmental and economic systems, in liberated countries they were as soon as possible to aid in restoring indigenous systems and authorities, and in both types of countries they were to make an all-out effort to effect gradual transition toward the envisaged postwar national and international order.
