Turnover can be prevented and retention increased by developing a driver with the life skills necessary to be successful in their daily working lives. A Survival Guide for Truck Drivers is the only book written for students or experienced drivers that offers, in a straightforward and nonpatronizing style, the practical tips for making life on the road more stress-free and comfortable – both for the driver and his or her family.Until now, drivers usually entered the transportation industry armed with a Commercial Drivers License and perhaps stories and information from friends and family. This new guide not only provides valuable information and invaluable insights into the life of a professional driver, but also offers resources and encouragement for those who keep North America’s commerce moving down the highway.Topics range from Money Management and Professional Improvement to Staying Healthy and Dealing With Stress – presenting advice to make the driver’s life better and happier. This lifestyle guide has a universal application that will appeal to student drivers, company drivers, owner-operators, and also the drivers’ families.A driving school graduate’s chance of landing a good job partly depends on his or her possession of life skills. Good retention tools are needed for the experienced but problem driver. A Survival Guide for Truck Drivers is the one solution for successful drivers.

Book excerpt: The title of this book, The Attitude, Respect, Training, and Safety Aspects of Trucking, is directly in line with the content of the book. As a professional driver, you will need all of these aspects to complete your portfolio. If you take just one of these aspects out of the equation, you are opening the door for potential hazards throughout your career. Example, you can be the most skilled driver in the world and yet when another driver intentionally or unintentionally cuts you off and you allow this to have a negative effect on your attitude, then there goes safety out the window. When you are considering a company as a new employer, it is critical that you discuss with your spouse and your children the requirements of the company. How often will you be gone? One week? Three weeks? How much time will you have with your family between trips? A number of drivers make the mistake of not discussing these priorities with their family. It might very well be that a local driving job would be best for you and your family as opposed to a position as an over-the-road driver. You would probably be surprised as to what your family would say. One thing is certain. If you don't discuss this with your family, you will invariably have marital and children problems. Remember this. Trucking is full of variables. Reefer, dry box, flatbed, tanker, or any other type of trucking you choose, just keep in mind that while it's still trucking, each one of these is as different as night and day. And by all means, I want you to realize that trucking is not for everybody. It takes a special breed of persons to be a true professional driver. Is that you?

Book excerpt: 50 Quick Tips to Keep Yourself, Your Family and Your Employees Safer on the Road. Every year in the US, more than 42,500 people lose their lives and over 2,375,000 are injured as a result of more than 5.9 million reported automobile crashes. Additionally, the annual economic cost of these, as well as unreported crashes, is estimated to exceed $230 billion. The Book on Safe Driving and the SMART Driving System(TM) were created to help reduce these numbers by providing the "typical" driver with the same level of information that is provided to professional drivers in major transportation industries. The 50, no-nonsense, easy to apply tips described in this book will enable drivers to make safer, more informed decisions every time they get behind the wheel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author builds on decades of complex research to examine the gender pay gap and the unequal distribution of labor between couples in the home. The author argues that although public and private discourse has brought these concerns to light, the actions taken - such as a single company slapped on the wrist or a few progressive leaders going on paternity leave - are the economic equivalent of tossing a band-aid to someone with cancer. These solutions, the author writes, treat the symptoms and not the disease of gender inequality in the workplace and economy. Here, the author points to data that reveals how the pay gap widens further down the line in women's careers, about 10 to 15 years out, as opposed to those beginning careers after college. She examines five distinct groups of women over the course of the twentieth century: cohorts of women who differ in terms of career, job, marriage, and children, in approximated years of graduation - 1900s, 1920s, 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s - based on various demographic, labor force, and occupational outcomes. The book argues that our entire economy is trapped in an old way of doing business; work structures have not adapted as more women enter the workforce. Gender equality in pay and equity in home and childcare labor are flip sides of the same issue, and the author frames both in the context of a serious empirical exploration that has not yet been put in a long-run historical context. This book offers a deep look into census data, rich information about individual college graduates over their lifetimes, and various records and sources of material to offer a new model to restructure the home and school systems that contribute to the gender pay gap and the quest for both family and career. --

Book excerpt: A common-sense driving book for teenagers, which recognizes and addresses the difference between the teen brain and that of an adult. Parents, investing in this book for your teen will teach them how to survive while learning to drive rather than becoming another teenage statistic. It won't teach them how to parallel park, make a three-point turn or how to pass a written test. They can easily learn these skills elsewhere. This book will provide the tools for your teen to recognize and avoid hazardous situations and unsafe drivers. It will show them how to train their inexperienced, teenage brains to make safe, split-second decisions when life-threatening events occur. In this book I have shared the knowledge gained over many years of driving, to help keep your teen alive while driving. Now help them to understand and apply this knowledge. Don't just give them this book. Make sure they read it. Quiz them on it, especially the chapter on Defensive Driving. Reviews by Law Enforcement Professionals "Investigating traffic accidents - especially those resulting in death or serious physical injury - is one of the most difficult jobs facing a police officer. When those accidents involve young or inexperienced drivers, the task is especially agonizing. With an emphasis upon driver safety, this very comprehensive book is an excellent resource for teenagers and parents alike, and I highly recommend it!" Daniel Carlson - Captain, Assistant Director of Training, New York State Police, Ret. Rich, thanks for letting me review your book. It's obvious you put a lot of effort into it, drawing on your unique experiences. I especially liked your personal stories and all of your common sense, practical advice! You have provided an informative life-saving guide for everyone hoping to avoid a motor vehicle accident. I am confident you will make better, more thoughtful drivers with your insights. Each of my own grandchildren will be receiving a copy of this book as they prepare to get behind the wheel and hit the road. Excellent job! Lars Jarvie - Chief of Police, City of Mesa, Arizona, Ret. Richard Kasper has developed a common-sense guide for those who don't always use a great deal of common sense. I wish that this book existed when my sons were learning to drive. Nicely done! Ben Wolfinger - Sheriff, Kootenai County, Idaho Great information even for me, an old retired cop of 34 years. Having raised five children and worked with youth in Boy Scouts and church activities, I can attest that, while they are wonderful people, teenagers act like teenagers. The information in this book may save a teen's life. Thanks for writing this, Rich. I will share it with my kids. Gordon H. Gartner - Chief of Police, Town of Payson, Arizona, Ret.

Book excerpt: Teenagers are by far the most dangerous age group on the road: a 16-year-old is 12 times as likely as older drivers to die in a crash as a single occupant; put two young teens in a vehicle, and the odds of death and injury nearly double. Safe Young Drivers helps to address this enormous problem. It is an indispensable guide for teaching teens to drive. Intended for parents and teens to use together, it addresses parental issues such as how to choose a car for your teen, and provides teens with simple instruction and important tips to remember. With simple graphics, a complete index, and a section called Some ABCs for the Road, Safe Young Drivers is a valuable tool for all new drivers and their teachers.
