Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Winter in Central America and Mexico The knights of old journeyed into distant lands to do deeds of chivalry; the knights of to-day, more practical though not less courageous, go searching for the North Pole, for gold, for knowledge, for adventure; but who of them has gone into distant, uncivilized lands in search of coffee? Such was the errand of the two whose wanderings and observations are recorded in this little volume. The journey was undertaken by Mr. James S. Sanborn, of the firm of Chase and Sanborn, of this city, in the interest of the coffee business of that firm. The author went, as narrated in the first chapter, to be a companion to her father, and, as far as a limited knowledge permitted, to speak the Spanish language. On our return home, notes of our travels were published in the New England Grocer, for the interest of the trade. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South by West: Or Winter in the Rocky Mountains and Spring in Mexico On the Atlantic, it ought to become the entrepot of a vast traffic, not only between California and New York, but even - so some think - between China and Europe. Heaven grant that that and all wholesome developments may be effected fiom within, by the Mexicans themselves, under the guidance of some wise and virtuous President; and anarchy and brigandage be peacefully exterminated, by the exter mination of their true causes - ignorance and want. If not, the work will have to be done - perhaps in rougher fashion, and perhaps sorely agalnst their will - by the American people. However much the wisest of them may shrink from the thought of annexation, they are growing less and less inclined to tolerate, along the whole frontier of Texas and New Mexico, a state of society which is as injurious to the Mexicans themselves as to the American settlers, and which has, in the last few years, given a pretext for armed invasion and usurpation by the Ultramontane party in Europe. That experiment, it is true, is not likely soon to be repeated. But it will be the duty of the patriotic President of the United States to prevent even the chance of its repetition and to carry out at all risks - as far as Mexico is concerned - the Monroe doctrine. However, we must hope better things for that fair but hapless land. We must hope that her govern ment will so conduct itself toward foreign statesmen as to re-enter honourably the comity of Nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Next-Door Neighbor: A Winter in Mexico Just as our North was putting on its winter night-robes, which it did not take off for four long months, I packed my valise, three of them, as became a carpet-bagger, and moved southward. Snow chased me as far as Richmond; moist, mild June met me at Montgomery; oranges, in clusters, plucked fresh from the boughs, were passed through the cars near Mobile, and New Or leans welcomed me to summer skies, and showers, and owers. A Northern touch of sharp and almost icy weather made the steamer for Havana less unwelcome. So a glimpse at good friends, and a coming and going grasp of hands, including a coming but not going grasp of hearts, and the steamer and I are off. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where to Spend the Winter Months: A Birdseye View of a Trip to Mexico, Via Havana We take pleasure in offering these lines to the traveling world. They embrace useful instructions in relation to the most agreeable and economical method of traveling between New York and Mexico, via Havana. The late visit of the Chicago merchants and also that of General Grant, has caused a greater interest among Americans in that country. The discovery of several very rich mines and the renewed efforts of railroad schemes have directed much attention to our sister Republic. For the past few years a large number of Americans have visited the city of Mexico, and it is probable that every year will bring that sunny land of plenty into greater favor with tourists and pleasure seekers. But to the ordinary American, Mexico is a terra incognito. Every one has some misty recollections of Montezuma and Cortez, of Iturbide and Maximilian; of wonderful prehistoric ruins and Eldorados hidden by a conquered race. But unfortunately the difficulties and modes of travel are unknown to the average tourist, and the means of finding out the necessary information, which has not until now been published, has caused many sightseers to abandon a delightful trip. The uncertainty that prevails in regard to the government and the supposed want of adequate protection have prevented the tourist from visiting a country which may truly be termed the promised land of American commerce. The information which we intend to give our reader about its climate and productions may not be uninteresting even to those who may never visit Mexico. An extended experience as a merchant and traveler, and a carefully written note-book, form the material from which this work is compiled. To travel with comfort and security, a knowledge of the country we contemplate visiting, as well as the customs and peculiarities of its inhabitants, will be esteemed as valuable. Practical experience is our guide; we offer it to our readers; we will point out the places of interest and indicate the best manner to reach them. We will in short lead our traveler safely around the many reefs, with which inexperience so frequently comes in contact.
