Download or read book A Wild Adventure written by Tom Pow and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Pow's beautiful, powerful poems examine the remarkable life of Thomas Watling. Watling was born in Dumfries in September 1762 and raised by a long-suffering maiden aunt. Convicted of forging Bank of Scotland one-guinea notes he was sentenced to fourteen years in the recently founded colony of Botany Bay in Australia. The first professional artist to arrive in the colony, Watling was seconded to its Surgeon General (and amateur naturalist) John White. His pioneer paintings of birds, animals and the landscape became some of the principal records of the earliest days of Australia. He was eventually pardoned, on 5 April 1797, and left Australia, eventually returning home to Dumfries. He died there, most likely in 1814.

Book excerpt: At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild, Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his readers, though, to do the final sort of which is which."--Amazon.

Book excerpt: Who is The Shadow? How did he come to be? Master of Mystery: The Rise of The Shadow delves into the murky origins of perhaps the most significant media creation of all time. Between 1930 and 1954, The Shadow was a dominant figure in American popular culture. A multi-media sensation, he emerged from the creative cauldron of the earliest days of radio drama, and soon migrated to magazines, comic books, film and eventually paperback books. Only Superman and Batman, who were created a few years later, rivaled The Shadow in global public recognition. A century later, this enigmatic personality and his famous mantra, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" remains recognizable to new generations born long after his remarkable reign. Popular culture historian and novelist Will Murray explores radio's first superstar and talks to the writers and artists who took a nebulous radio personality and brought him to blazing life in the pages of more than 300 classic pulp novels. Packed with revelations, Master of Mystery reveals how The Shadow inspired the creation of Batman in 1939! Including rare interviews with Walter B. Gibson, Theodore Tinsley, John L. Nanovic, Graves Gladney and Edd Cartier.

Download or read book Wild Child written by Sarah Glover and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evocative cookbook invites kids of all ages to the table for more mouthwatering innovative outdoor fare put together by the James Beard Award-nominated author of Wild: Adventure Cooking. In her first cookbook, Sarah Glover showed the world how liberating, satisfying, and easy it is to cook beautiful healthy food outdoors. Now she brings kids of all ages into the mix, proving that they too can take part in collecting, preparing, and cooking campfire meals the whole family can enjoy. Glover's simple yet elegant meals are inspired by the land and the sea: fish and ears of corn dangled on a stick over an open flame; perfect bread baked directly on hot coals; kale and potatoes simmered in saltwater; eggs fried alongside spicy sausage and toast; chili-brined cherry tomatoes--and more. Glover emphasizes fresh seasonal food that can be acquired locally. And, while her techniques date back to ancient traditions, the flavors are distinctly modern. Brimming with gorgeous landscape photography from across the Australian continent, this stylish yet down-to-earth cookbook encourages families to embrace the outdoors, teaches young chefs valuable techniques and life skills, and proves once again that everything tastes better cooked over an open flame.
