Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Welsh Family From the Beginning of the 18th Century I have been able to make some additions and correo tions to the history of the Welsh Family. For the account of the district of Llangynwyd, from which they sprang, I am indebted to a very interesting work written by Mr. Evans of Llangynwyd, to whom my warm thanks are due. His history of Llangynwyd is rich in carefully collected facts which throw great light on the material and moral development of the people of that part of South Wales. I am indebted to Mr. Evans also for the introduction to Mr. Thomas of Cardiff, the accomplished artist, who has made the sketch of the old house at Tynton for me. It is a faithful representation of it in its present somewhat depressed condition, shorn of its wing, and deprived of some of its windows. The beauty of the situation in which it stands is clearly indicated. My cousin, George Ashburner (a great-grandson of George Cadogan Morgan) has converted some rough sketches made by me very long ago, into the drawings of Llandaff Cathe dral and the old house at Bridgend, which are repro duced in this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rev. Morgan John Rhys: The Welsh Baptist Hero of Civil and Religious Liberty of the 18th Century A few years ago I received a note from the Rev. J. Spinther James, M. A., Llandudno, North Wales, author Of The, Ancient Welsh Church, The Welsh Baptists, &c &c., requesting me to gather all I could Of the history of Morgan John Rhys, and if possible to get a sample Of his hand writing. This prompted me to do all that I could to meet the above request. I found that I had some of his history already in my possession in the Literary Essays ofrev. L. Edwards, D. D., of Bala, and also in Seren Gomer, by Rev. Thomas Lewis, Of New port, Wales. And in the Minutes of the Indiana Baptist Association. By Mr. J. F. Barnes; but still I did not have what I wanted and needed. In September, 1898. I wrote a note of inquiry to Rev. Robert Lowry, D. D., Plainfield, New Jersey. He directed me to Mr. B. O. Loxley, Of Philadelphia, and Wm J. Rhees, Esq Of the Smithsonian Institute. Washington, D. C. The latter is a grandson of Morgan J. Rhys, 'and it is to him that I am indebted for all the materials of his grandfather found in this book, and for the sample Of his hand writing, and for the family records on the Rhees and Loxley Side. The Lowry record was sent me by Dr Robert Lowry. I do not profess to have exhausted the materials or the historv of M. J. R, but I have simply gathered these few facts and materials as a tribute of respect to the memory of one who deserves to be perpetuated in history as the hero Of liberty in the 18th century. Lloubtless after this has appeared Others will prep are a more elaborate and worthy history of this great and noble man. Rev. H. G, Weston, D. D., L. L. D., and M r. Robert P. Bliss, of Crozer Theological Seminary, will please accept my thanks for the loan Of the Altar Of Peace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A People’s History of Classics explores the influence of the classical past on the lives of working-class people, whose voices have been almost completely excluded from previous histories of classical scholarship and pedagogy, in Britain and Ireland from the late 17th to the early 20th century. This volume challenges the prevailing scholarly and public assumption that the intimate link between the exclusive intellectual culture of British elites and the study of the ancient Greeks and Romans and their languages meant that working-class culture was a ‘Classics-Free Zone’. Making use of diverse sources of information, both published and unpublished, in archives, museums and libraries across the United Kingdom and Ireland, Hall and Stead examine the working-class experience of classical culture from the Bill of Rights in 1689 to the outbreak of World War II. They analyse a huge volume of data, from individuals, groups, regions and activities, in a huge range of sources including memoirs, autobiographies, Trade Union collections, poetry, factory archives, artefacts and documents in regional museums. This allows a deeper understanding not only of the many examples of interaction with the Classics, but also what these cultural interactions signified to the working poor: from the promise of social advancement, to propaganda exploited by the elites, to covert and overt class war. A People’s History of Classics offers a fascinating and insightful exploration of the many and varied engagements with Greece and Rome among the working classes in Britain and Ireland, and is a must-read not only for classicists, but also for students of British and Irish social, intellectual and political history in this period. Further, it brings new historical depth and perspectives to public debates around the future of classical education, and should be read by anyone with an interest in educational policy in Britain today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces four journals that Henry Foxall (1758–1823) kept during a trip to the British Isles in 1816–1817. It provides unique primary source material, extensively annotated for clarity and context. Foxall’s journals offer an eyewitness account of Methodist embourgeoisement and institutionalization as they were occurring. They also provide some insight into the developing differences between American and British Methodism. The journals contain information on recent technological innovations of the British Industrial Revolution and recount Foxall’s interactions with a number of prominent persons, both in British Methodism and outside it. Because of Foxall’s close relationship with Francis Asbury, his status as an insider at the highest levels of American Methodism, and his clear understanding of the British Methodism in which he was raised, converted, and first licensed as a local preacher, his perspective is well-informed and unique.
