Book Synopsis A Watershed's Response to Logging and Roads by : Raymond Martin Rice
Download or read book A Watershed's Response to Logging and Roads written by Raymond Martin Rice and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of logging and roadbuilding on erosion and sedimentation are analyzed by comparing the North Fork and South Fork of Caspar Creek, in northern California. Increased sediment production during the 4 years after road construction, was 326 cu yd/sq mi/yr-80 percent greater than that predicted by the predisturbance regression analysis. The average sediment load during the 3 years of logging increased by 957 cu yd/sq mi/yr-275 percent greater than the predicted values. Although the erosion or sediment increases do not appear to be degrading site quality, average turbidity levels in the South Fork exceeded water quality standards.
Book Synopsis Effects of Forest Practices on Peak Flows and Consequent Channel Response by : Gordon E. Grant
Download or read book Effects of Forest Practices on Peak Flows and Consequent Channel Response written by Gordon E. Grant and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes a database of relevant studies reporting peak flow data across rain-, transient-, and snow-dominated hydrologic zones. Provides a quantitative comparison of changes in peak flow across both a range of flows and forest practices. Increases in peak flows generally diminish with decreasing intensity of percentage of watershed harvested and lengthening recurrence intervals of flow. Peak flow effects on channel morphology should be confined to stream reaches where channel gradients are less than 0.02 and streambeds are composed of gravel and finer material. Managers should evaluate the potential risk of peak flow increases based on factors such as presence of roads, specific mgmt. treatments employed, and watershed drainage efficiency.

Book Synopsis Streamflow Responses to Road Building and Harvesting by : John G. King
Download or read book Streamflow Responses to Road Building and Harvesting written by John G. King and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lncreases in annual streamflow and peak streamflows were determined on four small watersheds following timber harvesting and road building. The measured hydrologic changes are compared to those predicted by a methodology commonly used in the Forest Service's Northern Region, the equivalent clearcut area procedure. lncreases in peak streamflows are discussed with respect to their potential to modify the channel system.
