Book excerpt: In 1953, Bobby Ackles became the first water boy in the BC Lions Football Club. Today he is the team’s President and CEO. His star rose quickly from the very beginning, taking him from the sidelines to the top job and three Grey Cup championships. An integral member of the Lions’ organization for over 50 years, Bobby Ackles has seen and done it all in the extraordinary world of professional football. Not only did he go from lowly Water Boy to the executive suite in the CFL, Ackles also spent fifteen years in the NFL--six seasons with the mighty Dallas Cowboys, and then on to the Arizona Cardinals, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Miami Dolphins—and he even served a brief stint in the short-lived XFL as Vice President and General Manager of the Las Vegas Outlaws. As the only man to hold executive positions in all three professional leagues, Ackles offers up a unique perspective on pro football in North America. The Water Boy is Bob Ackles’ engaging memoir, a candid, personal account of his life and his amazing career in the game of football. From his humble beginnings, personally and professionally, Ackles has risen to become one of the most respected executives in football and in sports in general, both in Canada and the United States. With veteran journalist Ian Mulgrew, Ackles shares his rich, expansive life openly, with humour and amazing insights into the sport of football and its personalities, his long-running love affair with his wife Kay, his grasp on leadership and running a successful business. The Water Boy is a fascinating look inside the locker rooms and the owners’ boxes of the football world in North America, and an engaging telling of a life lived to its fullest.

Book excerpt: They are among the most famous and compelling photographs ever made in archaeology: Howard Carter kneeling before the burial shrines of Tutankhamun; life-size statues of the boy king on guard beside a doorway, tantalizingly sealed, in his tomb; or a solid gold coffin still draped with flowers cut more than 3,300 years ago. Yet until now, no study has explored the ways in which photography helped mythologize the tomb of Tutankhamun, nor the role photography played in shaping archaeological methods and interpretations, both in and beyond the field. This book undertakes the first critical analysis of the photographic archive formed during the ten-year clearance of the tomb, and in doing so explores the interface between photography and archaeology at a pivotal time for both. Photographing Tutankhamun foregrounds photography as a material, technical, and social process in early 20th-century archaeology, in order to question how the photograph made and remade ‘ancient Egypt’ in the waning age of colonial order.

Book excerpt: When you're allergic to water, growing up in Hawaii isn't always paradise. Everybody loves Jay. I love my brother, too. Sometimes I wish I could be him--a surfing star instead of the weird kid allergic to water, the Blalahs' favorite punching bag. But that's not the worst of it. In the middle of the night, I dream. There's a mysterious girl who lives in a magical place and acts like she knows me better than I know myself. We hide from the Man with Too Many Teeth. Some nights I wake up with my heart pounding and the urge to eat raw meat. It's just a dream, right? But then I saw him, the Man with Too Many Teeth, walking along the reef at Piko Point. Not even Jay can protect me now. __________________ One Boy, No Water is Book 1 in the Niuhi Shark Saga trilogy. Told from an indigenous perspective and set in a contemporary Hawaiian world where all the Hawaiian myths and legends are real, the series explores belonging, adoption, being different, bullying, defining family, and learning to turn weaknesses into strengths. Through the series, Zader discovers he's not really a boy allergic to water; he's something much more special, dangerous, and powerful. His adoptive brother Jay discovers what happens when the golden surfing star falls from his pedestal and has to choose to make the long climb back from serious injury. It's the ties that bind and support the brothers that allow them to create their own destinies. As typical local islanders, characters use common Hawaiian and Pidgin words and phrases. The meaning is usually clear from the context, but there is also a Hawaiian & Pidgin Glossary for additional support. Each chapter begins with a related island word or phrase and its definitions. A Discussion Guide for book club or classroom use is included. Free additional classroom support materials are available on www.NiuhiSharkSaga.com. One Boy, No Water, Book 1 in the Niuhi Shark Saga, was a 2017 Nene Award Nominee. The Nene Award is Hawaii's Children's Choice Book Award recognizing outstanding literary works.

Book excerpt: In 1954, Dennis Nilsen is 9 years old. He is almost swept out to sea, where he thinks he imagines his dead grandfather reaching out to him. Instead, he wakes up later on the shore, completely naked and covered in a sticky, white substance. The combination of death and sex in the growing boy's mind grows stronger at every turn. His fantasy life begins to quickly spiral out of control through adolescence and early adulthood. By the time he is in his 20s, he is regularly masturbating to the image of a dead or unconscious body in his mind; using a mirror, he is able to pretend that the dead body is his own. In 1983, Dennis Nilsen is 38 years old. He is arrested for the murders of 15 young men, six of which he is convicted for. Boy Under Water leads us through the story between these two moments in his life. Nilsen is called the Muswell Hill Murderer, the Kindly Killer, and the Monochrome Man. Boy Under Water takes us on that journey to discover the nuances and psychological challenges that lead him to murder for the first time, and then to make it a habit, discovering the man behind the sensationalised names. Through each victim, and through the men that got away from his murderous attempts, we see a building frustration that Nilsen cannot let go of. Whenever his emotions spiral out of control, a body ends up on the floor of his flat in the morning. Each of the twelve recognised victims is explored in depth, along with additional moments from his life that build up his personality. Most shocking of all, perhaps, is his ability to compartmentalise his life to be a murderer at home and a cheerful civil service worker at his job.

Book excerpt: Foreword The author, while telling his life story takes you on a trip to the outer limits of the human spirit back to the earthly realities of man in the flesh. He tells the story of how an extraordinary spiritual epiphany that occurred on the battlefields of Vietnam over 40 years ago, enabled him to connect first spiritually with God Almighty, but then also in a human way with the faith and hope, of his ancestors whose story is one with his and offer a solution that he believes will benefit the whole of our society today. From the highs of his spiritual revelation the author then takes you on some of the lows of present day reality with the political divide and social issues that has been eating away the moral fabric of the country for generations. The author translates the broken English of his ancestors into plain English so that the reader can better follow their story.

They can rock with the best of them, play folk tunes that bring admiration from the purists. They can make you laugh, they can make you cry. What is certain is that they have never been boring. In the first of two volumes Ray Dexter analyses every song the Waterboys have recorded and in doing so provides an insight that now other work on the band has provided. Essential reading for the true fan.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking history of how women found synchronicity—and power—in water. “If you’re not strong enough to swim fast, you’re probably not strong enough to swim ‘pretty,’?” said a young Esther Williams to theater impresario Billy Rose. Since the nineteenth century, tensions between beauty and strength, aesthetics and athleticism have both impeded and propelled the careers of female swimmers—none more so than synchronized swimmers, for whom Williams is often considered godmother. In this revelatory history, Vicki Valosik traces a century of aquatic performance, from vaudeville to the Olympic arena, and brings to life the colorful cast of characters whose “pretty swimming” not only laid the groundwork for an altogether new sport but forever changed women’s relationships with water. Williams, who became a Hollywood sensation for her splashy “aquamusicals,” was just one in a long, bedazzled line of swimmers who began their careers as athletes but found greater opportunity, and often social acceptance, in the world of show business. Early starlets like Lurline the Water Queen performed “scientific” swimming, a set of moves previously only practiced by men—including Benjamin Franklin—that focused on form and exhibited mastery in the water. Demonstrating their fancy feats in aquariums and water tanks rolled onto music hall stages, these women stunned Victorian audiences with their physical dexterity and defied society’s rigid expectations of what was proper and possible for their sex. Far more than bathing beauties, they ushered in sensible swimwear and influenced lifesaving and physical education programs, helping to drop national drowning rates and paving the way for new generations of female athletes. When a Chicago physical educator matched their aquatic movements to music in the 1920s, young girls flocked to take part in “synchronized swimming.” But despite overwhelming love from audiences and the Olympic ambitions of its practitioners, “synchro” was long perceived as little more than entertaining pageantry, and its athletes would face a battle against the current to earn a spot at the highest echelons of sport. Now, on the fortieth anniversary of synchronized swimming’s elevation to Olympic status, Swimming Pretty honors its incredible history of grit, glamor, and sheer athleticism.
