Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to the Antipodes: With Some Reminiscences of a Sojourn in Australia So many books have been written upon the subject of which the following few pages attempt to treat, that it would seem almost unpardonable in the present instance to swell the number by adding such an insignificant item as this. But it would be even more unpardonable were such a production to come out without a preface: such a proceeding would display a want of courtesy, and indicate a degree of vanity which might materially prejudice its reception. It is doubtful if this prefatory notice will ever be read; yet still, under the circumstances, it will at least offer some apology for the perpetration of the offence. There is no lack of information about these distant provinces: indeed, everything connected with them is quite familiar to the English people. Book excerpt: A group of people sit around a table theorising, categorising and telling stories. Their real purpose is never quite clear, but they continue on, searching for the monstrous. Part satire, part sacred rite, Annie Baker's play The Antipodes asks what value stories have for a world in crisis. First seen at Signature Theatre, New York, in 2017, the play had its UK premiere at the National Theatre, London, in 2019. Book Synopsis Illustrating the Antipodes by : Philip Jones
Download or read book Illustrating the Antipodes written by Philip Jones and published by . This book was released on 2021-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George French Angas (1822-1886) spent 18 months sketching and observing in Australia and New Zealand between 1844 and 1845. It was a period of decisive and irreversible cultural change. The young Angas excelled at capturing the minute detail of plants and people, objects and landscapes, and rapidly assembled a portfolio of 250 fine watercolours. In this fully illustrated volume, Philip Jones has used Angas's sketches, watercolours, lithographs and journal accounts to retrace his Antipodean journeys in vivid detail. Set in the context of his time, Angas emerges both as a brilliant artist and as a flawed Romantic idealist, rebelling against his father's mercantilism while entirely reliant upon the colonial project enabling him to depict pre- and early colonial ways of life.

Book Synopsis Le Corbusier in the Antipodes by : Antony Moulis
Download or read book Le Corbusier in the Antipodes written by Antony Moulis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the architect Le Corbusier’s encounters with Australia and New Zealand as a two-way exchange, showing the impact of his ideas and projects on architects of the region whilst also revealing counterinfluences on Le Corbusier in his post-war career that were activated by his contacts. Compiled from detailed archival research undertaken at the Fondation Le Corbusier, Paris, and nationally based archives, Le Corbusier in the Antipodes brings together a set of episodes placing them in context with the history of modern art, architecture and urbanism in 20th century Australia and New Zealand. Key exchanges between Le Corbusier and others never before described are presented and analyzed, including Le Corbusier’s contact with Australian architect Harry Seidler at Chandigarh, Le Corbusier’s drawing of the plan of Adelaide in 1950 and his creative collaboration with Jorn Utzon on art for the Sydney Opera House. This book also includes analysis of previously unseen Le Corbusier artworks, which formed part of the Utzon family collection. In reading these personal and contingent moments of encounter, the book puts forward new ways of understanding the dissemination and mediation of Le Corbusier’s ideas and their effects in post-war Australia and New Zealand. These antipodean contacts are set against the broader story of Le Corbusier’s career, questioning received interpretations of his design methods and current assumptions about the influence of his work in national contexts beyond Europe.
