Book excerpt: John Wise's appraisal of church governance in Massachusetts during the early 1700s offers deep insight into the religious and political thinking of the era. Wise sought to evaluate how and whether the churches of New England conformed to the principles set out by the English royal charter of 1630. Since the entire communities were built from scratch as colonies, with most colonists being avowedly Christian, the role of the church was central to daily life. As the generations passed the growth of the settlements, in size and population, altered how the local churches behaved. Questions such as whether each church was independent of another, or where the colonial churches stand in relation to those of England and Scotland, were important by the time Wise wrote this work. The direction of travel of the churches was also concerning to the settlers; should these churches evolve to have a hierarchy, with bishops and other officers? Or should each church retain a sole focus upon their local village congregations? Amicably resolving such debates was paramount in the context of the devout societies of colonial-era New England, and the author sets about doing so eloquently and persuasively.

Excerpt: ... more particular time is best left to the determination of each respective association. 5. That the associations shall direct when there is occasion for this council to convene, on any emergency, and shall direct whether the whole or only a certain number of these consociated pastors and churches shall convene on such occasions. 6. It appears agreeable to the present condition of our churches, and from our beginnings acknowledged, that no act of the councils is to be reckoned as concluded and decisive, for which there has not been the concurrence of the major part of the pastors therein concerned. 7. The determinations of the councils thus provided, for the necessities of the churches are to be looked upon as final and decisive, except aggrieved churches and pastors have weighty reasons to the contrary, in which cases there should be provision for a further hearing; and it seems proper that the council convened on this occasion should consist of such pastors I as may be more for number than the former, and they should be such, as shall be directed to, and convened for this purpose by the ministers of an association, near to that whereto those of the former council belonged, unto which the aggrieved should accordingly apply themselves, and in this way expect a final issue? 8. If a particular church will not be reclaimed by council from such gross disorders as plainly hurt the common interest of Christianity, and are not mere tolerable differences in opinion, but are plain sins against the command and kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, the council is to declare that church no longer fit for communion with the churches of the faithful; / and the churches represented in the council are toJ approve, confirm, and ratify the sentence, and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magisterial study, John McWilliams traces the development of New England's influential cultural identity. Through written responses to historical crises from early New England through the pre-Civil War period, McWilliams argues that the meaning of 'New England' despite claims for its consistency was continuously reformulated. The significance of past crises was forever being reinterpreted for the purpose of meeting succeeding crises. The crises he examines include starvation, the Indian wars, the Salem witch trials, the revolution of 1775–76 and slavery. Integrating history, literature, politics and religion this is one of the most comprehensive studies of the meaning of 'New England' to appear in print. McWilliams considers a range of writing including George Bancroft's History of the United States, the political essays of Samuel Adams, the fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne and the poetry of Robert Lowell. This compelling book is essential reading for historians and literary critics of New England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No group is quoted--and misquoted--more often than America's founders. When a political controversy heats up, the nation's speechwriters, politicians, reporters, editorial writers, and talking heads try to influence the debate by quoting their words. Year in and year out, teachers and political buffs look to their wisdom to illuminate the issues. How much easier it would be to find every key quote by the founders in a single source. The Quotable Founding Fathers, edited by Buckner F. Melton, Jr., provides just that source--a compilation of some 2,500 quotes summing up the wit and wisdom of the founders. While some of these quotations can be found in general quotation compilations such as Bartlett's, these volumes offer only a fraction of what's available. The Quotable Founding Fathers mines deeper into the founders' essays, diaries, letters, speeches, and sermons to extract all the nuggets that are significant to the history of the country-- and to the ongoing debate about the meaning of democracy in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion no longer plays a dominant role in the everyday consciousness of modern Western society. Few people recognize the underlying role of religious beliefs and practices in their life choices. Stephen Strehle shows the significance and ongoing influence of religion in contemporary life by revealing the sacred roots of modern political ideas in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He discusses the role of the church in government, probing into the sources of democratic, federal, and egalitarian ideas on the continent of Europe during the Reformation. The separation of church and state in America and the diminished power of the Church of England were the culmination of secular forces evolving since the Enlightenment. This secular view of life represents the basic mentality of the culture and the government in general; yet there is much to contradict it. The last half of the twentieth century witnessed a surge of grassroots movements from all sides of the political/religious spectrum. These included the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the Moral Majority of the 1980s, both of which provided an effective challenge to a simple separation of the two realms. Strehle explores some of the most cherished political ideals of modern society, including equality and democracy, liberty and natural rights, progress and capitalism, federalism and mixed government. He does not dismiss the vital contribution of other possible sources of inspiration from the world of religion or undermine the well-established place of “secular” sources. But he does show that certain ideas associated with the religious community have left an indelible mark upon significant aspects of the emerging American landscape.
