Book excerpt: A Village Boy's Life and Rare Experience is a luminous memoir about an extraordinary phenomenon that the village of Mukulu experienced when Ezzillogazin departed from Bello mountain. They could not believe what they were seeing. It was the Ark of Ezzillogazin, the oval of God (divenora in the Mukulu vernacular). They had worshipped and venerated it for generations, and it provided them with clean drinking water and varieties of edible fruits. It had protected them from enemies. The object emerged from the shadow of the moon on top of Mount Bello. It was followed by a big sound, a bang! A bright light shone on the whole Mukulu village such that the village could witness. It sat there for a second, and then the diamond ball began rolling down the mountain, leaving the creek in its midst. The creek was later filled with fish so that people no longer had to travel far to fish in the big river. They caught fish in the creek near the village.People began screaming from inside their huts, saying. "We are innocent! Why are you leaving us?" Others said, "Don't take all. Leave us some." At that moment, I wanted young people to know that their parents lived lavishly under the protection of Ark Ezzillogazin. Also, I wanted the world to know that Mukulu was a hidden paradise, where people grew up for generations under the protection of Ezzillogazin. That event took place when I was five years old, and I can still remember it vividly at seventy-two. For me, it's as if it happened yesterday. It was so powerful that it was hard to forget. Another thing is that before the departure of Ezzillogazin, the whole village was shut in by torrential rain for six days, so people couldn't go to the farm. It kept raining off and on. Creeks around the village were flooded, and then on the seventh day, the block of diamond emerged, followed by the powerful bang. It happened just as people were eating their dinner, so that both old and young could bear witness to it.The second part of the book deals with my adventures to the city of Fort-Lamy at age eleven. Today, it is called N'Djamena. Driven by hardship and in search of better opportunities in the city, I hoped to find work to help myself. However, because I was underage, I could not find work, and I became a burden to my aunt. Aged fifteen and expecting[LH1], the novelty soon wore off.I left Tchad and followed my friend to Sudan. In Sudan, I spent close to six years struggling trying to get into school, but I proved to be a failure. I decided to change my nationality to become a refugee from Angola. I registered at UNHCR, and my status as a refugee from Angola was recognized. I asked for education, and they took me to Rumbek Secondary School. I finished and got a scholarship from Sudan Council of Churches to study theology. The word theology sounded like zoology, and I was excited that I was going to study zoology, but it turned out to be theology. I had never come across the word theology or knew what it meant. But I had learned zoology in geography class.I was sent to Saint Paul Unity Theological College in Limuru, Kenya. I spent four years there finishing my studies. Giffin Bible College in Doleib Hill in Malakal Sudan (now South Sudan) offered me a teaching position. There I met William Bill, the principal director, and his wife, Lois, his assistant.I taught for three years. Based on the merits of my behavior, teaching performance, and relationship with my students, they offered me a scholarship to the Interdenominational Theological Center in the United States of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the discipline of social-cultural anthropology through an extensive study of the Nicobarese people in one of the remotest human settlements of the Indian Ocean. It examines the social, cultural, economic, political and magico-religious beliefs of the Nicobarese, and traces their ritualistic upbringing from conception till after death. The book also discusses the nature-man-spirit complex observed in the life of the Nicobarese. The author further utilises this study to examine the complex role of anthropologists in maintaining objectivity and authenticity in ethnographic accounts, and discusses several critical epistemological issues concerning social-cultural anthropology as a field of study today. Based upon extensive field research by the author conducted over four decades, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of sociology and social-cultural anthropology, human geography, social sciences, minority studies, as well as South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born Innocent Murambiwa Hondo on 11 January 1961, in Chinyemba Village, Glendale, Mazoe District of the then Rhodesia. I had an official change of my maternal surname ?Hondo? to my paternal surname ?Chirawu? and acquired the middle name ?Blessed? in 1983. Since my childhood I have always aspired to utilise every opportunity that helps me help my fellowman best. I was brought up in colonial Rhodesia which was dominated by ?divide and rule? politics in favour of the white minority population. As a result the black child?s school was far inferior compared to his white counterpart?s. There was also a deliberate public policy to provide the average black child with an education only adequate for him to perform a subordinate role to his ?white master? and only 12% of the black children were expected to proceed to secondary education. These would form the ?elite? part of the society taking up occupations like nurses, teachers, clerks, agricultural extension officers and others. I was very fortunate to fall into the category of the ?elite? group, who made it through the bottleneck system into secondary education ? Salvation Army?s Howard Secondary School which was a syndicate examination centre for The University of Cambridge whereby GCE ?O?Level examinations were set and marked at that reputable university. I sat for those Exams in November/December 1978 and passed with grades B and C in 8 subjects including Maths, Science and English ? thus obtaining a University of Cambridge GCE certificate in First Division. I later on proceeded to a private institution, Ranche House College where I did my English and Sociology at Advanced level. My first job after school was working as a bank clerk for Standard Chartered Bank from May 1980 to Sept 1981. I then intercalated from banking to study for my Diploma in Theology at the International Bible Training Centre (Lagos) in 1982, resumed banking for a stint then did my initial teacher training from 1984 to 1987. I then taught Woodwork, RE and English in Zimbabwean secondary schools for 11 years, during which period I rose through the ranks of being an ordinary class teacher, head of department (Religious Education & English) and deputy head teacher. While in full-time teaching, I managed to study for a degree in educational administration, planning and policy studies as well as a part one in BA Media studies through Zimbabwe Open University ? the latter which was interrupted by socio-politico-economic problems in Zimbabwe that time. I was doing all those study programmes paying the fees from my salary and without a penny of assistance from the government. In Zimbabwe switching from being a teacher to being a journalist for the independent press was and still is, like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. In April,1999, I then joined the Daily News, the then Zimbabwe?s once most popular and best seller tabloid later banned and defunct from 2003-2010, where I served as a subeditor-cum-proofreader until the time I migrated to England in December 2001. By the time I left Zimbabwe there was every sign that the future of my colleagues, our newspaper and I was very gloom. After the bombings of our offices and printing press, our then editor-in-chief, Geoff Nyarota announced that due to the political situation and the hostility that time we were experiencing, he could not guarantee our safety anymore. So, I had no choice but sell my family property, buy a ticket, flew into self exile in England, and I have always lived here since then. Later on I called my family over to join my stay in the country. My grandmother, my childhood mentor
