These students often demonstrate difficulties in social situations, such as interacting with peers or understanding social cues. As a result, students diagnosed with ASD can seem socially awkward and engage in inappropriate behaviors in social contexts. Currently, there are few studies that examine social skills interventions for college students diagnosed with ASD. A well-established intervention for addressing social skill development is video-self modeling (VSM). Until now, VSM research has focused on primary and secondary students, without investigating this intervention's effects on the social skills of individuals in the postsecondary setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VSM on social skills for individuals diagnosed with ASD in postsecondary settings. In this study, we examined the effects of VSM on social skills (i.e., social initiations, eye contact, and pausing) using a multiple baseline design across therapists and a multiple baseline design across participants with generalization probes. Results demonstrated high levels of response to VSM for three participants compared to baseline conditions, and moderate response for the fourth participant.

Video self-modeling appears to be one educational tool that will help to provide the necessary tools for students to be successful, decreases the potential for the student to be victimized by bullies, and increase the quality of life students will have. This study evaluates the use of video self-modeling with a high school freshman who is on the autism spectrum. Video self-modeling was used to decrease the maladaptive behavior of biting himself. The ABA research design allowed for a two week intervention where the student watched a video of himself demonstrating a replacement behavior instead of biting his arm. The study found a statistically significant difference in the incidents of biting in baseline one and baseline two.

Book excerpt: Increasingly, students with ASD are attending tertiary education levels. Data indicates the numbers are increasing, but it is difficult to certify the percentage of students diagnosed with ASD attending postsecondary education. Rates vary across studies about how many students with ASD attend postsecondary education because many do not graduate compared to individuals without disabilities. This information signifies an important area of study in that research needs to address how we can best support adults with ASD attending postsecondary education programs to ensure their graduation rates are in line with those who do not have disabilities. Research provides some evidence to support self-advocacy skills, but little has occurred to explore how best to teach these skills at the postsecondary level. To that end, there is a positive model that emphasizes the unique needs of persons with autism, and it is the video model. Video modeling has a solid evidence base; however, studies involving video modeling for undergraduate students to advocate on college campuses are non-existent. The current study sought to explore how the use of video modeling, paired with a task analysis and role-play, impacted the ability of undergraduate students with ASD to use self-determination and self-advocacy skills in a university setting successfully. The video modeling intervention covered four essential areas of self-advocacy identified by the literature, including a) requesting accommodations from disability services, b) talking to a professor to disclose accommodations, c) locating services/supports throughout campus, and d) handling situations when a professor is not accommodating. Participants were required in the baseline phase to check in on their progress by completing a questionnaire about self-advocacy skills related to an intervention package consisting of a video model, a task analysis, and role-playing about specific components related to self-advocacy. Although there is a paucity using precise psychometric scales towards self-advocacy, the Self-Management Self-Test (SMST) was used as a template to create the questionnaire utilizing the four components of self-advocacy skills. The methodology used was a complex reversal (ABACADAE) design. For each phase, the participants watched a video model about four elements of self-advocacy and role-played the skill until mastery. A second questionnaire was completed afterward as a means of self-monitoring alongside questions that are not directly targeting self-advocacy components as a means of experimental control. Book excerpt: The need for effective interventions to improve the social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that are feasible to implement in the general education classroom has been well documented. Video self-modeling (VSM) interventions have produced rapid, durable positive behavioral changes that have been generalized beyond the intervention setting for individuals with a wide variety of conditions including ASD. In this study VSM was used as an intervention for increasing the use of spontaneous verbal communication during cooperative math activities with peers by three Hispanic boys ages 5 and 6 who had high functioning (HF) ASD. No defensible intervention effects were demonstrated in this experiment. It was likely that the target social communication skills were beyond the participants' current skill sets at least for the context in which those skills were used, a cooperative math activity. Possible implications, limitations, and future research were discussed.

Results were positive and suggest that video self-modeling (VSM) is a viable solution to decrease prompt dependence and increase independence and task completion for students with an ASD. Participants quickly reached criterion, generalized behavior, and maintained skills after four weeks at 80-100% independence. Social validity of VSM was also measured by surveying teachers and students and found clear variations between general and special education teachers regarding their perceptions of the independence of students as a result of the VSM. This study also revealed the discrepancy between the levels of prompting between general education and special education teachers.

Book excerpt: Single-subject research design assessed the effects of the video self-modeling (VSM) teaching method on functional life skills for three high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a home setting. VSM is a teaching method in which an individual views a video clip, watching herself/himself engaging in a task (behavior). This is meant to build familiarity with the task, enhancing the individual's ability to perform it independently. By applying this method to functional life skills, which are necessary for high school students with ASD, it may be possible to help them build the skills necessary to live independently. The current study utilized a non-concurrent multiple baseline across behaviors research design, which was implemented to answer the research questions: (1) What are the effects of VSM on functional life skills for high school students with ASD in a home setting? (2) Once acquired, are functional life skills maintained over a period of time? (3) Does VSM provoke self-efficacy beliefs in high school students with ASD? The study was guided by self-efficacy theory. Self-efficacy refers to a person's self-belief that she/he is capable of completing a task. With this in mind, it is hypothesized that by using VSM as a teaching method, participants will learn functional life skills, maintain these skills over time, and report higher levels of self-efficacy beliefs post-intervention. Visual analyses were utilized to analyze and interpret study results. Visual analyses consisted of analyzing any changes in variability, level, and trend of each phase by implementing a line graph. Reliability was assessed through Inter-observer Agreement (IOA). Procedural integrity was verified for procedures implemented in phases of the study. Results from visual analyses from the study suggest VSM is an effective teaching method for adolescents with ASD in a home setting. Additionally, all participants maintained their acquired functional life skills post one week, and post two weeks following the end of VSM phase. Descriptive statistics was applied to evaluate pre and post assessment of self-efficacy beliefs for participants. Specifically, the total, mean total, and median are reported. The study found that VSM is effective for helping high school students with ASD develop and maintain functional life skills. Results revealed no significant changes occurred between pre and post assessment of self-efficacy beliefs for all participants. Participants and their mothers reported overall positive perceptions of social validity. Implications for practice and theory are discussed, as well as directions for future research.

This study compared the frequency of specific social behaviors that contribute to success in a classroom setting. Three situations were observed: 1) a student was exposed to video modeling designed by the researcher paired with Social Stories (TM); 2) a student was exposed to the researcher's video modeling paired with prompts and positive reinforcement, and; 3) a student was exposed to the regular social skills instruction that other student receive in a resource setting. Data were collected using the Prosocial Behaviors Academic Checklist (PBAC). Near or at the end of the study, a survey asking for information about changes in specific behaviors was given to the students' other teachers. The data collected suggested that each intervention conjoined with video modeling is more effective for certain social behaviors, but overall more effective than the regular social skills instruction. Data collected from the surveys did not clearly indicated whether the participants generalized the targeted behaviors.

Book excerpt: Video self-modeling has been found to be effective in increasing appropriate behaviors, increasing task fluency, and decreasing inappropriate behaviors. During video self-modeling, a student is filmed completing a task and then mistakes, prompts, and negative behaviors are edited from the video. When the edited video is viewed by the subject student, the student views a perfect model of him or herself successfully completing the given task. Video self-modeling has been used predominately with participants with autism spectrum disorder. This study is a replication of a previous study in which the effectiveness of video self-modeling and video peer modeling was compared (Sherer, Paredes, Kisacky, Ingersoll, & Schreiman, 2001). Sherer et al. evaluated these procedures with high functioning students with autism using a combined multiple baseline across participants and alternating treatment design. This study differs from Sherer et al.[alpha]s study in its use of participants who have multiple disabilities and low cognitive functioning. The results show that video self-modeling is effective for some participants while video peer modeling is effective for others. The individual student[alpha]s preference for one form of video modeling over another form may indicate the method that is best for a particular participant. Implications for further research are included.
