Book excerpt: Approaching eighty years of age, James Sharksburg-O'Rourke Caldwell records the events of his Vagarious Life. About his mother who was too busy cultivating her sexual affairs to take care of James and his sister Theresa. About mentally retarded Theresa who spent all her time listening to the radio, her gaze fixed intently on the orange light of the dial. About the men who stayed in his mother's bed and whom James and Theresa called uncles. About his Jewish father who departed the family on James' first birthday. About his three marriages and many children. About his less than glorious service in the United States Navy. About the academic degrees he attained based solely on the influence of his father-in-law with the college. About his love of the poetry of Edgar A. Guest, who James claims was America's greatest poet. About his various sexual affairs with men as well as women. About the suicides of his mother and first wife, Laura. About the psychiatrist James consults with for many years, Dr. Simon, who becomes squeamish when any sexual topic comes up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberty for Jefferson was 'the' driving force of human history and a realizable state of the human organism and of a society of men. Study of history and anthropology showed that humans were moving from the barbaric independence suffered in primal hordes, which lived inefficiently on lands, to a more economical, human-friendly use of land in social settings, demanding laws for order. Those laws, historically, favored the powerful few to the detriment of the hoi polloi. As a pupil of the Enlightenment, Jefferson argued that all humans were by nature equal, and thus, deserving of as much civic liberty as a reason-oriented and sciences-loving society, a Jeffersonian republic, could guarantee them. This book, philosophical, explains how such a society was possible, given Jefferson’s conception of the nature of man, and how the realization of one such society could lead, through contagion, to a global community of such societies. There are a large number of books that cover Jefferson’s political ideology (e.g., Gordon Wood’s 'Empire of Liberty' and Adrienne Koch’s 'The Philosophy of Thomas Jefferson')—too many to limn—but none that gets at the philosophical implications of TJ’s views on liberty. This book, examining TJ as a natural scientist and philosophy, examines and situates him in the manner of other great political ideologists of his day—e.g., Hume and Kant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that the ontology of data resists slowness and also that the digital revolution promised a levelling of the playing field. Both theories are examined in this timely collection of chapters looking at time in the digital world. Since data has assumed such a paramount place in the modern neoliberal world, contemporary concepts of time have undergone radical transformation. By critically assessing the emerging initiatives of slowing down in the digital age, this book investigates the role of the digital in ultimately reinforcing neo-liberal temporalities. It shows that both "speed-up" and "slow down" imperatives often function as a form of biopolitical social control necessary to contemporary global capitalism. Problematic paradoxes emerge where a successful slow down and digital detox ultimately are only successful if the individual returns to the world as a more productive, labouring neoliberal subject. Is there another way? The chapters in this collection, broken up into three parts, ask that question.

Book excerpt: In the history of love stories, one of the most incredible and heartbreaking is about the enduring love Hosea had for Gomer, which is found in the Old Testament. God instructed the prophet Hosea to marry a “wife of harlotry,” for the land had committed harlotry. In The Gomer Anointing, author Stacia V. Hunter offers a reverential look at the story of Gomer, providing insight into the biblical “harlot” and describes modern-day women and any possible connections between them, including loss of spirituality. Hunter narrates how today’s Gomer is trapped in an identity crisis and engaged in war to water down God’s word to fit her unfitness. She’s played the harlot to the nation that battles political wars on social media. She’s uncovered by her vulgarity and her lewdness on the internet. She’s full of her fleshly desires and has behaved shamefully due to her intoxication of her own enslaved heart by offering sexual perversion on television and movies. Hunter discusses how the book of Hosea is a narrative bursting with prophetic and poetic intent, which mirrors the divine romance between God and his covenant people. The Gomer Anointing examines whether today’s Gomer is redeemable.

Book excerpt: I am interested only in expressing basic human emotions - tragedy, ecstasy, doom, - Mark Rothko (1903 - 1970) said of his paintings. If you are moved only by their colour relationships, then you miss the point. Throughout his career, Rothko was concerned with what other people experienced when they looked at his canvases. As his work shifted from figurative imagery to luminous fields of colour, his concern expanded to the setting in which his paintings were exhibited.
