Book excerpt: This report marks the end of the first year of an anticipated three year effort to study methods for numerically identifying objects according to shape in two dimensions. The method is based upon comparing the unit gradient of an observed object and the unit gradient of a standard object over a specified range of points. The manner in which the gradients are compared forms the basis of a shape recognition scheme, which is then applied to simple closed plane figures. The gradient based method is calibrated by using various distorted objects in comparison with a set of standard reference objects. The use of pattern recognition techniques for computer identification of two-dimensional figures will be investigated during the second and third years of this project. This book was released on 2011 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the grand challenges of artificial intelligence is to enable computers to interpret 3D scenes and objects from imagery. This book organizes and introduces major concepts in 3D scene and object representation and inference from still images, with a focus on recent efforts to fuse models of geometry and perspective with statistical machine learning. The book is organized into three sections: (1) Interpretation of Physical Space; (2) Recognition of 3D Objects; and (3) Integrated 3D Scene Interpretation. The first discusses representations of spatial layout and techniques to interpret physical scenes from images. The second section introduces representations for 3D object categories that account for the intrinsically 3D nature of objects and provide robustness to change in viewpoints. The third section discusses strategies to unite inference of scene geometry and object pose and identity into a coherent scene interpretation. Each section broadly surveys important ideas from cognitive science and artificial intelligence research, organizes and discusses key concepts and techniques from recent work in computer vision, and describes a few sample approaches in detail. Newcomers to computer vision will benefit from introductions to basic concepts, such as single-view geometry and image classification, while experts and novices alike may find inspiration from the book's organization and discussion of the most recent ideas in 3D scene understanding and 3D object recognition. Specific topics include: mathematics of perspective geometry; visual elements of the physical scene, structural 3D scene representations; techniques and features for image and region categorization; historical perspective, computational models, and datasets and machine learning techniques for 3D object recognition; inferences of geometrical attributes of objects, such as size and pose; and probabilistic and feature-passing approaches for contextual reasoning about 3D objects and scenes. Table of Contents: Background on 3D Scene Models / Single-view Geometry / Modeling the Physical Scene / Categorizing Images and Regions / Examples of 3D Scene Interpretation / Background on 3D Recognition / Modeling 3D Objects / Recognizing and Understanding 3D Objects / Examples of 2D 1/2 Layout Models / Reasoning about Objects and Scenes / Cascades of Classifiers / Conclusion and Future Directions

Book excerpt: Abstract: "A computer vision system has been implemented that can recognize three-dimensional objects from unknown view points in single gray-scale images. Unlike most other approaches, the recognition is accomplished without any attempt to reconstruct depth information bottom-up from the visual input. Instead, three other mechanisms are used that can bridge the gap between the two-dimensional image and knowledge of three-dimensional objects. First, a process of perceptual organization is used to form groupings and structures in the image that are likely to be invariant over a wide range of viewpoints. Second, a probabilistic ranking method is used to reduce the size of the search space during model based matching. Finally, a process of spatial correspondence brings the projections of three-dimensional models into direct correspondence with the image by solving for unknown viewpoint and model parameters. A high level of robustness in the presence of occlusion and missing data can be achieved through full application of a viewpoint consistency constraint. It is argued that similar mechanisms and constraints form the basis for recognition in human vision."

Book excerpt: Presents recent significant and rapid development in the field of 2D and 3D image analysis 2D and 3D Image Analysis by Moments, is a unique compendium of moment-based image analysis which includes traditional methods and also reflects the latest development of the field. The book presents a survey of 2D and 3D moment invariants with respect to similarity and affine spatial transformations and to image blurring and smoothing by various filters. The book comprehensively describes the mathematical background and theorems about the invariants but a large part is also devoted to practical usage of moments. Applications from various fields of computer vision, remote sensing, medical imaging, image retrieval, watermarking, and forensic analysis are demonstrated. Attention is also paid to efficient algorithms of moment computation. Key features: Presents a systematic overview of moment-based features used in 2D and 3D image analysis. Demonstrates invariant properties of moments with respect to various spatial and intensity transformations. Reviews and compares several orthogonal polynomials and respective moments. Describes efficient numerical algorithms for moment computation. It is a "classroom ready" textbook with a self-contained introduction to classifier design. The accompanying website contains around 300 lecture slides, Matlab codes, complete lists of the invariants, test images, and other supplementary material. 2D and 3D Image Analysis by Moments, is ideal for mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, software developers, and Ph.D students involved in image analysis and recognition. Due to the addition of two introductory chapters on classifier design, the book may also serve as a self-contained textbook for graduate university courses on object recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a prototype 3-D object recognition system composed of three major sections; 1) an object representation module, 2) a feature extraction and matching module, and 3) a recognition control strategy module. The object representation module uses an implementation of a newly developed algorithm for the construction of perspective projection aspect graphs of convex polyhedra. The feature extraction and matching module implements a new method of using Fourier Descriptors to characterize the complete 2-D projection of an object. The recognition control strategy module uses the aspect graph object representation to control the application of a constrained optimization algorithm. The system is implemented in C on a SUN workstation, and some simple recognition experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the validity of the overall concept. The limitations of the system suggest several important avenues for future research. Keywords: Three dimensional, Two dimensional. (sdw).

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Many recent object recognition systems use a small number of pairings of data and model features to compute the 3D transformation from a model coordinate frame into the sensor coordinate system. In the case of perfect image data, these systems seem to work well. With uncertain image data, however, the performance of such methods is less well understood. In this paper, we examine the effects of two- dimensional sensor uncertainty on the computation of three-dimensional model transformations. We use this analysis to bound the uncertainty in the transformation parameters, as well as the uncertainty associated with applying the transformation to map other model features into the image. We also examine the effects of the transformation uncertainty on the effectiveness of recognition methods."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer vision has been successful in several important applications recently. Vision techniques can now be used to build very good models of buildings from pictures quickly and easily, to overlay operation planning data on a neuros- geon’s view of a patient, and to recognise some of the gestures a user makes to a computer. Object recognition remains a very di cult problem, however. The key questions to understand in recognition seem to be: (1) how objects should be represented and (2) how to manage the line of reasoning that stretches from image data to object identity. An important part of the process of recognition { perhaps, almost all of it { involves assembling bits of image information into helpful groups. There is a wide variety of possible criteria by which these groups could be established { a set of edge points that has a symmetry could be one useful group; others might be a collection of pixels shaded in a particular way, or a set of pixels with coherent colour or texture. Discussing this process of grouping requires a detailed understanding of the relationship between what is seen in the image and what is actually out there in the world.

Book excerpt: Based on the successful 2014 book published by Apress, this textbook edition is expanded to provide a comprehensive history and state-of-the-art survey for fundamental computer vision methods and deep learning. With over 800 essential references, as well as chapter-by-chapter learning assignments, both students and researchers can dig deeper into core computer vision topics and deep learning architectures. The survey covers everything from feature descriptors, regional and global feature metrics, feature learning architectures, deep learning, neuroscience of vision, neural networks, and detailed example architectures to illustrate computer vision hardware and software optimization methods. To complement the survey, the textbook includes useful analyses which provide insight into the goals of various methods, why they work, and how they may be optimized. The text delivers an essential survey and a valuable taxonomy, thus providing a key learning tool for students, researchers and engineers, to supplement the many effective hands-on resources and open source projects, such as OpenCV and other imaging and deep learning tools.
