Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical flow model, HIVEL2D, has been developed as a tool to evaluate high-velocity channels. HIVEL2D is a depth-averaged, two-dimensional flow model designed specifically for flow fields that contain supercritical and subcritical regimes as well as the transitions between the regimes. The model is a finite element description of the two-dimensional shallow-water equations in conservative form. Provided in this report are a description of the numerical flow model and illustrative examples of typical high-velocity flow fields that the model is capable of simulating. Model verification is obtained by comparison of simulation results with data obtained from flume studies. Model assumptions and limitations are also discussed. Finite element method, Numerical model, Petrov-Galerkin, High-velocity channels, Oblique standing waves, Subcritical flow, Hydraulic jump(strong shock), Weak shocks, Supercritical flow.

Book excerpt: A procedure is presented for design of two-dimensional channels for compressible nonviscous flow. The method requires boundary conditions consisting of the shape of one channel surface and the velocity distribution on that surface. The process consists of the step-by-step computation of an arbitrary number of streamlines within the channel.

Book excerpt: Methods of solution by Green's function are developed for the design of two-dimensional unbranched channels with prescribed velocities as a function of arc length along the channel walls. The methods apply to incompressible and linearized compressible, nonviscous irrotational flow. One numerical example is presented for an accelerating elbow shape obtained from the solution by Green's function is the same as that obtained from a solution by relaxation methods for the same prescribed conditions. The time required for the calculations is considerably less for solutions by Green's functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-Dimensional Separated Flows provides a systematic presentation of the theory of separated flow around bodies. The main classes of aerodynamic problems of plane-parallel flow around bodies are described, and the steady aerodynamic, unsteady aerodynamic, and statistical characteristics of a trailing wake are determined. Numerical methods based on the synthesis of models for non-viscous incompressible flow and boundary layer, algorithms, examples, and systematic comparisons are presented. The book also includes numerical results for the problem of separated flow around fixed, oscillating, and rotating cylinders, in addition to results for separated flow around an aerofoil over a wide range of angles. Two-Dimensional Separated Flows will benefit researchers and students studying aerodynamics, aircraft dynamics, aeroelasticity, and the aerodynamics of building structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of the work carried out in the UK and Japan on "Flow and Sediment Transport in Compound Channels". It therefore describes research which has been conducted, primarily over the last two decades, and which has yielded a fairly detailed picture of the important behaviours of compound channels and produced a number of engineering prediction methods which ought to be widely adopted in practice. The text will inevitably highlight areas where our knowledge is sparse and it will spur others on in the task of filling in such gaps. The concept of bi-national groups of researchers meeting together intermittently over period of some years, though not new, has drawn both inspiration and experience and the interaction has produced tangible outcomes in the form of this useful publication.
