These books present the three life stages of Kemps ridley sea turtles from their perspective of the sea world around them, and of the humans with whom they share it. Throughout the book, the fictional episodes are accompanied by pertinent, marine science facts. As we catch up with the main characters, four Kemps ridley sea turtles; we find Littlest Hatchling, his friends, Shellton, Coralee and Sealya have outgrown their hatchling life-stage, and are excitedly entering their Juvenile Life Stage. No longer will they feed from sargassum rafts embedded with tiny crustaceans, nor will they be confined to one or two feeding areas. Their growing bodies require more food to strengthen their lungs and their flippers in preparation for the first migration. As juveniles, they are encouraged to explore other feeding grounds, practice longer swims and shallow dives. Coralee and Sealya are cautious when exploring new feeding areas, the same cannot always be said of Littlest Hatchling and Shellton. The male juveniles are intensely curious about the nesting season, Arribada, which occurs about every year and a half to two years. Ignoring their B O Ks' warnings, they hide in the marsh to wait and watch a nesting female, but they learn much more than they bargained for. (Book Of Knowledge) Before they've even begun their migration, Littlest Hatchling and Shellton have a heart-stopping encounter with a trapped, not so bright,' Giant Squid and a most unusual eel. (Are there electric eels in the Gulf of Mexico?) Another ridley family member, Buster, defies the rules and enters an area where only adult ridleys are permitted to gather. The results of which, Buster will never forget, nor will any of his family members. At last, the juveniles are strong enough to embark on their first migration. This means leaving behind their very good friends, the Seahorse family, Heroe, Ballor, Relampago and Galloper. Coralee and Sealya join a female migrating group, while Littlest Hatchling and Shellton accept an invitation to join a group of Kemps ridleys from the Mexican Gulf waters. Departing their Texas Gulf waters, strong currents in the Gulf of Mexico carry the juveniles through waters off the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, then over and down Florida's west coast. Upon reaching the southern most tip of Florida s coast, they spend several weeks enjoying and exploring beautiful coral reefs. While there, the four Texas ridleys team up with two second year migrating females for their journey up the Atlantic Coastline. Over the next several months the six ridleys experience numerous strange sights and some unusual challenges. You won't want to miss Sealya's most unfortunate entrapment in a submerged, broken beach pail, nor how a group of tiny Red Flatworms help to rescue her.
