Book excerpt: “An instant classic. . . . A pure joy to read.” —Washington Post Book World Both a heart-racing adventure and an uplifting quest, Walking the Bible presents one man’s epic journey- by foot, jeep, rowboat, and camel- through the greatest stories ever told. From crossing the Red Sea to climbing Mount Sinai to touching the burning bush, Bruce Feiler’s inspiring odyssey will forever change your view of history’s most legendary events. The stories in the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Torah, come alive as Feiler searches across three continents for the stories and heroes shared by Christians and Jews. You’ll visit the slopes of Mount Ararat, where Noah’s ark landed, trek to the desert outpost where Abraham first heard the words of God, and scale the summit where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Using the latest archeological research, Feiler explores how physical location affects the larger narrative of the Bible and ultimately realizes how much these places, as well as his experience, have affected his faith. A once-in-a-lifetime journey, Walking the Bible offers new insights into the roots of our common faith and uncovers fresh answers to the most profound questions of the human spirit. “Smart and savvy, insightful and illuminating.” —Los Angeles Times “An exciting, well-told story informed by Feiler’s boundless intellectual curiosity . . . [and] sense of adventure.” —Miami Herald

Download or read book No Stone Left Unturned written by Roy and Evelyn Turkington and published by Word Alive Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to introduce the reader to many of the major narratives of the Bible, beginning with Abraham and other patriarchs, Israel’s Judges and Prophets, Jesus Christ, Paul, and John’s Seven Churches in Revelation. This covers considerable geography from Iran (biblical Persia) and Iraq in the east, through Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Israel, and Lebanon, to Turkey, Greece, and Italy in the west. It is not a theological text, but mostly the Turkington’s travel logs from 1991–2004 when they had the opportunity to visit almost all known Bible sites. Often their experiences were funny, exciting, frustrating, sometimes daring, and on occasion a little dangerous. Together, with their two children, they drove through fields, along tracks, through fruit groves and shallow rivers, and into some quite intimidating areas. They were pummeled by stones several times, robbed three times, stopped by police or army five times, and had many exciting border crossings (including one where they were within seconds of being shot by Israeli border guards,) and they had one car accident—this all to experience these Bible lands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Baptist Abroad: Or Travels and Adventures in Europe and All Bible Lands Next to seeing a foreign land with one's own eyes is seeing it through the eyes of an intelligent, appreciative countryman. The word is purposely chosen, because one wishes to know what is observed and thought by a person who has tastes, sympathies and views in common with himself. A thousand things in a strange country are interesting and in different degrees. One studies historically, another socially, another politically, another ecclesiastically, while unfortunately not a few rush pell-mell bringing back the most superficial and indistinct impressions. Some find most satisfaction in architecture, while others have their chiefest enjoyment in sculpture, in painting, in natural scenery, in costumes and customs. No two have precisely the same fancies, and yet an observant, cultivated countryman is more likely to please us by what he likes and describes than is a foreigner whose point of view and whose mental habitudes are so different from our own. Download or read book Wanderings in Bible Lands written by Daniel Long Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Bible Lands: Notes of Travel in Italy, Greece, Asia-Minor, Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, Cush, and Palestine Ine years ago, with a considerable degree of relue tance, the author was induced to publish a book of travels bearing the title, Europe and Bible Lands. The work was received with so much favor that eleven editions were printed to meet the demand for it. From the many kind words written and spoken in regard to the book the author has been led to believe that some good resulted from its publication. And now, after the lapse of almost a half score of years, another journey has been made to the Lands of the Bible, another series of letters has been written and another book is to be sent out on its mission. The question as to the good to be accomplished by a work of this kind has been anxiously considered by the writer. If no good is to come to humanity from it, then the time spent in travel and writing has been wasted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
