Book Synopsis History of the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry by : R. C. Rankin
Download or read book History of the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry written by R. C. Rankin and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry was recruited on an order emanating from the War Department, that Gov. Todd, of Ohio, would raise one Regiment of Cavalry, for "Border Service," the Ohio River then being the boundary. In writing this history, the author has endeavored to do exact justice to all, so far as the author knew, and if there are any errors in this narrative, it is that of omission, having had to write exclusively from memory, and in all probability there are omissions. While the author would not deprive any regiment of her laurels, he believes the 7th O. V. C., for the services rendered and the number of times she was under fire, stands second to no regiment from Maine to California.
Download or read book Ohio’s War written by Christine Dee and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1860, Ohio was among the most influential states in the nation. As the third-most-populous state and the largest in the middle west, it embraced those elements that were in concert-but also at odds-in American society during the Civil War era. Ohio’s War uses documents from that vibrant and tumultuous time to reveal how Ohio’s soldiers and civilians experienced the Civil War. It examines Ohio’s role in the sectional crises of the 1850s, its contribution to the Union war effort, and the war’s impact on the state itself. In doing so, it provides insights into the war’s meaning for northern society. Ohio’s War introduces some of those soldiers who left their farms, shops, and forges to fight for the Union. It documents the stories of Ohio’s women, who sustained households, organized relief efforts, and supported political candidates. It conveys the struggles and successes of free blacks and former slaves who claimed freedom in Ohio and the distinct wartime experiences of its immigrants. It also includes the voices of Ohioans who differed over emancipation, freedom of speech, the writ of habeas corpus, the draft, and the war’s legacy for American society. From Ohio’s large cities to its farms and hamlets, as the documents in this volume show, the war changed minds and altered lives but left some beliefs and values untouched. Ohio’s War is a documentary history not only of the people of one state, but also of a region and a nation during the pivotal epoch of American history.
Book Synopsis Ohio's Black Soldiers who Served in the Civil War by : Eric Eugene Johnson
Download or read book Ohio's Black Soldiers who Served in the Civil War written by Eric Eugene Johnson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio's Black soldiers have always been in the forefront of this nation's wars and the American Civil War is no exception. The state raised two infantry regiments for the United States Colored Troops during this war and then sent recruits to other regiments organizing in the South. Over 6,700 Black Ohioans served in this war and the names of many of these men have been lost until now. The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866 has the rosters for the two Black regiments and additionally, the names of 1,007 more men who were listed as being unassigned to a regiment for a total of 5,092 men. This roster simply states "no further record found" for these men. The author has researched each man using the Compiled Military Service Records of Colored Troops and he has been able to identify the regiments in which these other men were assigned. In the process he was also able to identify over 1,600 more Black Ohioans who are not listed in the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866. Besides listing the name of each soldier and his regiment, this book also lists the company, rank, age, birth place, enlistment and discharge information, and death and burial information if occurred during the war. The author was also able to identify a number of Blacks who served with Ohio's white volunteers both as combatants and non-combatants.

Aged veterans who survived the ferocious contest returned to Antietam in the early 1900s to fight for and preserve the memory of their sacrifices all those years earlier. Join Kevin Pawlak and Dan Welch as they explore Ohio's role during those crucial hours on September 17, 1862.
Book Synopsis Meigs County Ohio and Her Soldiers in the Civil War by : Lois Helmers
Download or read book Meigs County Ohio and Her Soldiers in the Civil War written by Lois Helmers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My love of Meigs County began as a young child; I visited many summers with relatives, traversing hollers and river trails. Little did I realize the influence this time would have on my life. When I learned that several of my ancestors had been in the Civil War, I began researching their military history and that of many others from Meigs County. I found research difficult because little had been written in books. What was written was not in any concise order, perhaps only a paragraph or two per book. I hope the information you find here to be a much better represenation of the county and men who served during the Civil War, and will help amateur genealogists like myself to know more about their ancestors; where they fought, if they died, where, and the burial location. There are in-depth details about several battles including Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia and Corinth and Iuka, Mississippi. There are descriptions of over 9,000 men and boys, many who enlisted in Meigs County, Ohio.
Book Synopsis The Untried Life by : James T. Fritsch
Download or read book The Untried Life written by James T. Fritsch and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told in unflinching detail, this is the story of the Twenty-Ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, also known as the Giddings Regiment or the Abolition Regiment, after its founder, radical abolitionist Congressman J. R. Giddings. The men who enlisted in the Twenty-Ninth OVI were, according to its lore, handpicked to ensure each was as pure in his antislavery beliefs as its founder. Whether these soldiers would fight harder than other soldiers, and whether the people of their hometowns would remain devoted to the ideals of the regiment, were questions that could only be tested by the experiment of war. The Untried Life is the story of these men from their very first regimental formation in a county fairground to the devastation of Gettysburg and the march to Atlanta and back again, enduring disease and Confederate prisons. It brings to vivid life the comradeship and loneliness that pervaded their days on the march. Dozens of unforgettable characters emerge, animated by their own letters and diaries: Corporal Nathan Parmenter, whose modest upbringing belies the eloquence of his writings; Colonel Lewis Buckley, one of the Twenty-Ninth’s most charismatic officers; and Chaplain Lyman Ames, whose care of the sick and wounded challenged his spiritual beliefs. The Untried Life shows how the common soldier lived—his entertainments, methods of cooking, medical treatment, and struggle to maintain family connections—and separates the facts from the mythology created in the decades after the war.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 1864, after three bloody years of civil war and with victory seemingly within reach for the Northern armies, John Brough, Ohio's energetic wartime governor, offered his state's militia for 100 days of federal service. Ordered east for duty in forts, railways, and prisons, they freed veteran troops to make the last great push against Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy. History soon overtook the Ohioans, however. They fought at Monocacy with Lew Wallace and under the watchful eye of Abraham Lincoln at Fort Stevens. They battled Mosby and other feared Southern guerrillas in Virginia and West Virginia. They fell to John Hunt Morgan's cavalry in Kentucky. They toiled and fought against thunderous Petersburg.

Book Synopsis Opdycke's Tigers in the Civil War by : Thomas Crowl
Download or read book Opdycke's Tigers in the Civil War written by Thomas Crowl and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized in the fall of 1862, the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was commanded by the aggressive and ambitious Colonel Emerson Opdycke, a citizen-soldier with no military experience who rose to brevet major general. Part of the Army of the Cumberland, the 125th first saw combat at Chickamauga. Charging into Dyer's cornfield to blunt a rebel breakthrough, the Buckeyes pressed forward and, despite heavy casualties, drove the enemy back, buying time for the fractured Union army to rally. Impressed by the heroic charge of an untested regiment, Union General Thomas Wood labeled them "Opdycke's Tigers." After losing a third of their men at Chickamauga, the 125th fought engagements across Tennessee and Georgia during 1864, and took part in the decisive battles at Franklin and Nashville. Drawing on both primary sources and recent scholarship, this is the first full-length history of the regiment in more than 120 years.
