Thus by heating a serum to 55 C. The haemolytic action is destroyed While the action of the agglutinins is retained. Precipitins. If a rabbit is injected with the serum of horse, chicken or eel, and the serum of this rabbit is later mixed with the serum of a horse, chicken or eel, as the case may be, the latter becomes cloudy by reason of the precipitation of a portion of the albumen. The substances in the rabbit's serum which de termine the precipitation of a portion of the albumins are known as precipitins. Leblanc finds that in the majority of cases the precipitate is made up in part of albumin from the serum operated on, but mainly of pseudo-globulin from the specific serum. The specific serum may operate equally on the serum of two nearly related animals'. Thus the serum taken from the rabbit which had been first injected with chicken serum, precipitates the normal serum of both chicken and pigeon. These two animals are supposed to have common receptors. Without going further in the elucidation of precipitins and their relations, it may be said that in them as in the agglutinins we have to a certain extent a parallelism with the production of antitoxins by the introduction into the living -body of the toxins of a given disease. No method for the utilization of the precipitins for protective purposes has been successfully worked out, yet they have been availed of to differentiate the flesh of one animal from that of another for which it has been sub stituted - the flesh of the horse from that of the ox, or that of the dog from that of the sheep. In too many instances the translators have been neither veterinarians nor teachers of veterinary medicine, and too few of them linguists. Furthermore, the books in this field have not been designed for undergraduate students; they are bulky, comprehensive works of reference of little pedagogic value; all of them have been superseded by newer editions in the original tongue. Although this volume is designed primarily for the student, it will be found valuable to the practitioner, investigator or intelligent stockman who may have need of knowledge of the fundamental principles of the practice of veterinary medicine presented in concise, clear-cut and at the same time not too dogmatic form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Veterinary Medicine, Vol. 3 Nervous control of bodily functions: affected through disease of nerve centres or nerve trunks, sensory, motor, vaso-motor, etc. Modes of impaired nervous function: objective; subjective. Nervous characteristics in different breeds, individuals, sexes, castrated animals. Nervous disorder from microbian toxins, narcotics, nervous stimulants, etc. All bodily functions are more or less directly controlled by the nervotis systenm, hence nervous troubles are interwoven with the diseases of all other organs. Disorder of the nerve centres or nerve trunks affects the most distant parts over which these preside, or to and from which they convey nervous impulse. In different cases we see this operating through the sensory or motor functions, through lack of coordination or of balance, through modification of the circulation, respiration, secretion, absorption, nutrition, metabolism, special sensation, intellection, emotion, etc. These manifestations are less evident or less diagnostic in the lower animal, because we cannot fulh avail of the subjective symptoms. While the human patient can tll us his feelings and experience in their regular order and succession, we can only infer most of these in the animal, through dependent objective symptoms. In many cases we cannot even infer for lack of these dependent symptoms. The practitioner must carefully watch for and accurately observe all objective symptoms, and seek to rightly interpret them. Among other things he must note the nervous conformation, organization and susceptibility; the hereditary nervous characteristics as seen in breeds, temperament, habit, aptitude to learn, docility, instinct, intelligence, emotions and affections, and judge the case in the light of these. Similarly he must take into account the hereditary, racial and individual irritability, obstinacy, restiveness, vice, alertness, sluggishness, stupidity, nioroseness, and diagnose accordingly. It is thought by the translator that in undertaking to present the work in its English form, he should add a contribution which he hopes will prove valuable, especially to the branch of General Surgery, which is perhaps still deficient in English veterinary literature; but, as no reference to American work is made in the original text, the translator will take the liberty to add notes, whenever in his estimation due credit can be inserted, in relation to what contribution he can gather from American works. It is possible, however, that in adding these notes some omission may occur; in which case it is hoped that the indulgence of the reader will not be refused to the author, who will have then sinned without intention. My principal desire is to have the English-speaking profession benefited, and give its members an opportunity to be well acquainted with all the progress made in Veterinary Surgery up to this day.
