Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1760–1834) regarded the Précis of the Lectures on Architecture (1802–5) and its companion volume, the Graphic Portion (1821), as both a basic course for future civil engineers and a treatise. Focusing the practice of architecture on utilitarian and economic values, he assailed the rationale behind classical architectural training: beauty, proportionality, and symbolism. His formal systematization of plans, elevations, and sections transformed architectural design into a selective modular typology in which symmetry and simple geometrical forms prevailed. His emphasis on pragmatic values, to the exclusion of metaphysical concerns, represented architecture as a closed system that subjected its own formal language to logical processes. Now published in English for the first time, the Précis and the Graphic Portion are classics of architectural education.

Download or read book Hendrik Petrus Berlage written by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. Although his Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century, Berlage's writings are highlighted here. Bringing together Berlage's most important texts, among them "Thoughts on Style in Architecture", "Architecture's Place in Modern Aesthetics", and "Art and Society", this volume presents a chapter in the history of European modernism. In his introduction, Iain Boyd Whyte demonstrates that the substantial contribution of Berlage's designs to modern architecture cannot be fully appreciated without an understanding of the aesthetic principles first laid out in his writings.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture: With Illustrations, Notes, and an Examination of Grecian Architecture Since the time of sir william chambers very great changes have come over both architectural theory and practice. For a while ultra-greek, or what was passed off for and accepted as such, was in the ascendant, until its insufficiency to do more than give us the merest Copyism, and the most wearisome repetition of the same forms and features, led to another vicissitude in a quite contrary direction. Gothic, for which the way had been prepared by antiquarian researches, studies, and publications, was welcomed as a change, and a further one has since taken place, an endeavour being now made to bring that style into. Vogue, and establish it as the most suitable one for secular as well as ecclesiastical buildings, and, moreover, to introduce into it much of quite foreign character. The result of such attempt remains to be seen; yet, even if successful, it can be so only partially, for hardly ever can our anglo-italian be discarded from practice in our secular architecture. Hardly can the study of it be dispensed with were it regarded only as a matter of curiosity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Chambers (1722-96), architect and furniture designer, wished to further his career in the 1750s by publishing on architecture. He also became the Prince of Wales' architectural tutor, architect to the office of works, then head of the royal works (comptroller and surveyor-general from 1782). Notably, he remodelled Buckingham House (1762-73) and designed Somerset House (1775-96), but Chambers' reputation rests also on his Treatise on Civil Architecture (1759), which he revised and expanded in 1791 as A Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture. It is regarded as one of the standard English texts on classical architecture, and remains essential reading. This reissue is of the two-volume edition of 1825, annotated by the architect and writer Joseph Gwilt (1784-1863). Volume 1 contains Gwilt's prefatory material, including an analysis of Grecian architecture's development, followed by Chambers' systematic treatment of the orders of architecture.
Book Synopsis The Topkapi Scroll by : Gülru Necipoğlu
Download or read book The Topkapi Scroll written by Gülru Necipoğlu and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.
