Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five papers were presented at the International Symposium on Photoelasticity, Tokyo, 1986, representing fifty-five authors. Eighteen of these papers were presented by Japanese photoelasticians and seventeen by leading foreign authorities from eleven countries (Austria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, F.R. of Germany, France, Greece, India, Switzerland, UK, USA and USSR) • This is the first symposium on photoelasticity of international scope held in Japan. The primary objectives of this symposium are to help bridge the gap between photoelastic researchers around the world, to promote mutual understanding and communications and to facilitate exchange of newly acquired knowledge in theories and techniques. In addition, it is important that these valuable results are communicated effectively to engineers who can apply them in practice in industry. The papers presented at this symposium cover all branches of photo elasticity in a broad sense, including, in addition to long estab lished photoelasticity, newly developed moire, interferometric, and holographic photoelasticity, caustics and speckle. Therefore, from an optical stress analysis pe~spective, this volume is the latest compre hensive collection of photoelastic expertises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoelasticity for Designers covers the fundamental principles and techniques of photoelasticity, with an emphasis on its value as an aid to engineering design. This book is divided into 12 chapters, and begins with an introduction to the essential optical effects necessary for an understanding of the photoelastic phenomena. The next chapters describe the concept and features of polariscopes; the characterization of photoelastic materials; the formulation and testing of two-dimensional models of photoelasticity; and the application of model stresses to prototypes for the analysis of stresses occurring in the plane of the model, effectively of uniform thickness. These topics are followed by a discussion of the frozen stress technique and a comparison of the various materials that can be used for models in the technique. The ending chapters deal with the principles and application of the birefringent coating and distorted model techniques. This book will prove useful to photoelasticians, design engineers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements for Stresses in Machine Components focuses on the state of stress and strain of components and members, which determines the service life and strength of machines and structures. This book is divided into four chapters. Chapter I describes the physical basis of several methods of measuring strains, which includes strain gauges, photoelasticity, X-ray diffraction, brittle coatings, and dividing grids. The basic concepts of the electric strain gauge method for measuring stresses inside machine components are covered in Chapter II. Chapter III elaborates on the results of experimental work on stresses and strains in linear, plane, and three-dimensional states of stress under static load conditions. The last chapter is devoted to examples for experimental stress analysis of plane and three-dimensional states of stresses under dynamic loads. Conclusions drawn from the theoretical and experimental investigations discussed in this text are provided at the end. This publication is intended for engineers and technicians, but is also a good reference for students researching on the stress or strains of machine components.

Mindlin by his former students. This book contains the development of specific areas of Mechanics of Solids to which Mindlin has contributed most. Organized into eight chapters, this text first discusses the past, present and likely future of photoelasticity. Subsequent chapters explore the development of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity; generalized elastic continua; bodies in contact with applications to granular media; and waves and vibrations in isotropic and anisotropic plates. Other chapters discuss the vibrations and wave propagation in rods, piezoelectric crystals, and electro-elasticity. Lastly, the lattice theories and continuum mechanics are described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method has been developed for making photoelastic analyses of three-dmensional stress systems by utilizing the polarization phenomena associated with the scattering of light. By this method, the maximum shear and the directions of the three principal stresses at any point within a model can be determined, and the two principal stresses at a free-bounding surface can be seaparately evaluated. Polarizing light is projected into the model through a slit so that it illuminates a plane section. The light is continuously analyzed along its path by scattering and the state of stress in the illuminated section is obtained. By means of a series of such sections, the entire stress field may be explored. The method was used to analyze the stress system of a simple beam in bending. The results were found to be in good agreement with those expected from elementary theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers solid mechanics for non-linear elastic and elastoplastic materials, describing the behaviour of ductile material subject to extreme mechanical loading and its eventual failure. The book highlights constitutive features to describe the behaviour of frictional materials such as geological media. On the basis of this theory, including large strain and inelastic behaviours, bifurcation and instability are developed with a special focus on the modelling of the emergence of local instabilities such as shear band formation and flutter of a continuum. The former is regarded as a precursor of fracture, while the latter is typical of granular materials. The treatment is complemented with qualitative experiments, illustrations from everyday life and simple examples taken from structural mechanics.
