Fluids are subdivided into non-elastic fluids or liquids; and elastic fluids or gases and vapours. Definitions. The mass of a portion of fluid is the quantity of matter which it contains as measured by its inertia, and is pro portional to its weight at the same place. The weight of a body, as in dynamics, is the pressure produced by it under the action of the force of gravity. As in my treatise on Statics, I have begun with the very elements, and, assuming that the students reading in pure mathematics is advancing simultaneously with his study of Hydrostatics, I have endeavoured to lead him into the advanced portions of the subject. It will be noticed, however, that the way in which the reader is introduced to the notion of a perfect fluid is very different from that which is usually adopted in similar treatises. A definition of a perfect fluid founded upon the elementary facts and principles of the theory of strain and stress is not calculated to produce the impression of simplicity, more especially when the symbols of the Difierential Calculus are employed in the process. I maintain, however, that in such a presentation of the basis of the subject there is really nothing which a beginner who is familiar with the elements of Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry cannot readily understand. Many very valuable treatises have been published on this subject; but from their being either almost exclusively practical or exclusively mathematical, and from the physical parts of the science being detached from the theoretical, the student cannot derive much real advantage from them, unless previously acquainted with the principles of the science, and with the Differential and Integral Calculus; for unless so previously prepared, he must content himself with adopting results without being thoroughly acquainted with the processes by which they are obtained. It is abvious that this method of arriving at an end, without understanding the means, may employ, but cannot properly instruct the mind. I have endeavoured in the following treatise to develop the principles of the science with the use of none but the most elementary mathematics; so that the student, who now either partially or wholly neglects this beautiful branch of Natural Philosophy, from the uninviting character which Analysis presents to those who are not familiar with it, may proceed to its study, with the knowledge of a few propositions of Geometry, Algebra and Mechanics, and for understanding by far the greater portion of the subject even that amount of previous knowledge is not necessary.
