Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the host of NPR affiliate’s Forum with Michael Krasny, a compendium of Jewish jokes that packs the punches with hilarious riff after riff and also offers a window into Jewish culture. Michael Krasny has been telling Jewish jokes since his bar mitzvah, and it’s been said that he knows more of them than anyone on the planet. He certainly states his case in this wise, enlightening, and hilarious book that not only collects the best of Jewish humor passed down from generation to generation, but explains the cultural expressions and anxieties behind the laughs. "What’s Jewish Alzheimer’s?" "You forget everything but the grudges." "You must be so proud. Your daughter is the President of the United States!" "Yes. But her brother is a doctor!" "Isn’t Jewish humor masochistic?" "No. And if I hear that one more time I am going to kill myself." With his background as a scholar and public-radio host, Krasny delves deeply into the themes, topics, and form of Jewish humor: chauvinism undercut by irony and self-mockery, the fear of losing cultural identity through assimilation, the importance of vocal inflection in joke-telling, and calls to communal memory, including the use of Yiddish. Borrowing from traditional humor and such Jewish comedy legends as Jackie Mason, Mel Brooks, and Joan Rivers, Larry David, Sarah Silverman, Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Schumer, Let There Be Laughter is an absolute pleasure for the chosen and goyim alike.

Book excerpt: Peninnah Schram, widely regarded as one of the great Jewish storytellers of our generation, has collected and retold sixty-four delightful Jewish folktales to create Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another. Ms. Schram, who believes that stories form "the link between the generations," helps forge that link with this book, ensuring that these stories will continue to live and breathe in the modern world. The life force animating these tales is almost tangible. The printed words seem to vibrate, as if the author possessed the voices of various tellers and lent their lilting tones and ripe inflections to the printed page. Furthermore, the laughter, sobs, and delighted cries of countless listeners also echo in these pages. Schram, who has written a thoughtful, informative introduction for each story, demonstrates on every page her belief that the stories "connect to our lives." And when the lifelike characters woven into Schram's magic tapestry suffer or enjoy the fates they most deserve, we rejoice, secure in their storybook world?a world where justice, however incomprehensible, is always done, and where we attain happiness by living in accordance with Jewish law and in harmony with the world's natural order. Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another abounds in a gentle wisdom that presses itself upon our complex and often self-contradictory lives, infusing us with patience, tolerance, and hope. We identify with the kings and princes, fools and beggars, heroes and leaders, villains and witches of yesteryear because, though our lives are vastly different from theirs, we share their moral choices and experience their dilemmas. Schram joins Jewish storytellers throughout the ages, linking past to present and preserving an invaluable legacy for generations yet unborn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak of God reaching out to humans, it is called revelation, and the human response to revelation is inspiration. A Treasury of Jewish Inspirational Stories is meant to move the head and the heart to appreciate, as author Lawrence J. Epstein writes, "the effects that divine influence and guidance have had on Jewish individuals, communities, and history". The stories he has gathered manifest the many forms of this human response. As in his previous best-selling volume, A Treasury of Jewish Anecdotes, Epstein shows us his remarkable skill of gathering tales and his talent for retelling them in a voice that speaks clearly to a contemporary audience. These are not stories of purported miracles. Nor are they always verifiable. Some of the stories are folktales, others are exaggerations. Some are biographical, others are snapshots from history. But all have a singular theme and goal: renewed faith in divine guidance or in the human capacity to do good deeds. Epstein explains in his introduction that an inspirational story can affect its listener in many ways: it can clarify religious ideas, lead to spiritual experiences, reinforce theological notions, provide peace of mind, give birth to motivation for spiritual action, and serve as a model for living. To find such stories for A Treasury of Jewish Inspirational Stories, Epstein searched every corner of Jewish experience, from the Bible to modern times. He combed the classical literature, hasidic lore, and the lives of well-known Jewish personalities - such as Hillel, Rashi, and Maimonides - as well as lesser-known figures and ordinary individuals, looking for tales that provide us with a "shock of insight into eternal mysteries".These stories, Epstein goes on to say, help us "become connected to a divine process we can only dimly comprehend, but one to which we react with awe and reverence". A Treasury of Jewish Inspirational Stories is a fine sourcebook for what the author describes as "a special kind of literature". Epstein has provided us with retellings of such stories as the Exodus from Egypt, Mount Sinai, the receiving of the Ten Commandments, the story of Esther, Judah Maccabee, Herzl and the rebirth of Israel, the fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto - over 125 "stories that move the intellect and the emotions". Epstein remarks that the original idea for writing a book of inspirational stories came after listening to a survivor of the Holocaust. It is his hope that A Treasury of Jewish Inspirational Stories will allow readers to search for the inspirational stories in their own lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book on Jewish humor in which individual jokes are singled out for comprehensive study, Life is Like a Glass of Tea devotes a chapter to each of eight major jokes, tracing its history and variants—and looking closely at the ways in which the comic behavior enacted in the punchline can be interpreted. One of the unique properties of classic Jewish jokes is their openness to radically different interpretive options (having nothing to do with wordplay or double entendre). This openness to alternate interpretations—never before discussed in the literature on Jewish humor—gives classic Jewish jokes their special flavor, as they leave us wondering which of several possible attitudes we are expected to hold toward the comic figure. An additional chapter is devoted to the ways in which Jewish jokes tend to evolve over time and across language and cultural barriers. Throughout the book, in fact, one can see the processes that Jewish jokes undergo over decades as their comic potential is unfolded in successive stages, and when they are transplanted from European to American soil. Now in its Second Edition, this expanded version adds two new chapters and new introductory material. It includes a 2015 Foreword by Marc Galanter, who notes that the author “is concerned not only with what makes jokes funny but with what makes some of them profound. His imaginative response to this puzzle makes this little book a distinctive and engaging contribution to the literature on Jewish jokes and on jokes generally.” It will appeal to the general reader, as well as to readers especially interested in Jewish culture, the psychology of humor, religion, ethnography, and folklore. “Richard Raskin’s book on Jewish humor was the most original and useful I found in years of research on the topic. I’m delighted to see it back in print—and with added chapters!” — Ruth Wisse Professor Emerita, Yiddish and Comparative Literature, Harvard University Author, No Joke: Making Jewish Humor (2013) “A fascinating book that explores the richness of Jewish humor. Raskin offers a thought-provoking analysis of what makes Jewish humor special. Raskin merges an understanding of Jewish culture, fresh psychological insights, and a sophisticated reading of jokes and their evolution to create a gem of a book. However, it is not just an outstanding book on Jewish humor. It is an outstanding book on humor. Period. After reading it, you won’t laugh the same way again.” — Dov Cohen Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Illinois Co-editor, Handbook of Cultural Psychology (2007)
