Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Treasury of American Songs and Lyrics Poets of America the names of over three hun dred native writers. American verse in the last half century has been extraordinarily prolific. It would seem that the time has come, in the course of our national literature, for proving all things and holding fast that which is good. The fact that the title of this compilation instantly calls to mind that of Mr. Palgrave's scholarly collee tion of English lyrics need not prove a disadvantage to the book if the purpose which led to the choice of name is understood. The verse of a single cen tury produced in a new country should not be expected to equal the poetic wealth of an old and intellectual nation. But if American poetry cannot hope to rival the poetry of the mother country, it may at least be compared with it; and the fact of such a comparative point of view will aid rather than hinder the student of our native poetry in estimating its value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Verse (1610-1897) This outline may assist the reader to a more satisfac tory appreciation of this volume than he otherwise would have. Had Mr. Onderdonk lived to superintend the book's publication he would doubtless have revised and extended his notices of certain poets whom he briefly mentions in his concluding chapter. While I am aware that as these notices stand they are not altogether so full and explicit as their subjects deserve, yet they are as he wrote them, an inherent part of the volume, and therefore I have not felt at liberty to change them. For I am persuaded that however much the reader may dif fer from the author's estimate of a poet or a poem, all will applaud the spirit in which that estimate is con ceived and offered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Treasury of Great Poems English and American: From the Foundations of the English Spirit to the Outstanding Poetry of Our Own Time; With Lives of the Poets and Historical Settings Selected and Integrated If poetry is the most potent of human communications, it should also be the simplest and the most logical expression. It should, some say, require no particular cogitation, no after thoughts, no exercise of the speculative mind. But poetry, being the product of intuition as well as experience, transcends plain statements; it surpasses fact and leaps ahead of logic. Simple arithmetic to the contrary, a poem is not the sum of its parts. A poem is greater than its parts; it is even something beyond its parts. It is prompted by an idea, enhanced by rhyme, pointed by meter, colored by metaphor. This fusion, this enrichment and intensification, has created a new thing: the poem itself, which is beyond analysis - even, at times, beyond logic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yale Book of American Verse A statement of the sort just made is based, in truth, not only upon the assumption that the editor's acquaintance with the poetical literature of our race is absolutely complete, but that his judgment of the comparative excellence of the pieces composing it is absolutely perfect. No one would be willing to con cede the latter qualification and few the former. Every collection of poems must inevitably reflect to a great extent the limitation of the compiler's knowl edge. Many pieces which he would have been glad to include, had he been aware of their existence, are likely to have escaped his observation. But were there no lack of knowledge, the choice he makes will be certain to reflect the nature of his literary sym pathics, and even more the limitations of his literary taste; at all events its distinctive character. There are certain poems which it is always easy to select. Upon them the consent of the ages has already set the stamp of approval. Against this verdict of suc cessive generations there may be protest upon the part of the individual; but from it there can be no valid appeal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Verse: British and American In looking over the anthologies of poetry on the shelves of any well-equipped public library, one thinks of the rats that followed the Pied Piper. There are war poems, love poems, sad poems, funny poems, old poems, new poems, child poems, college poems, poems of the city, poems of the country - anthologies by tens and dozens. In the latest additions to these we take particular pride, for they represent the verse of our own age. Modern poetry is worth being proud of for at least two reasons. First, it appeals to many different types of people. Whether one is looking for poems that are heroic, fanciful, humorous, or thoughtful - poems on any subject from the steel industry to the immortality of the soul - poems of the loftiest imagination or the tenderest human interest - he will find his desires gratified. In no other period of English literature has poetry been so varied, so like an elaborate prism which flashes new beauty to each eye. For never before has it refracted the light of so many and such different personalities. It has been said that every one can write at least one good poem; and nowadays he can usually get it published. The name of our young poets is Legion. Moreover, many of our poets, even the best-known ones, have wide interests besides their poetry. They may be newpaper men, lawyers, college professors, army officers, social workers. The great emotional stimulus of the war drove vigorous, practical men and women of all ages and occupations to the discovery that poetry might be a solace and joy not only to the student or visionary, but to the average person. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Eighty Seven Poets: Representing American Verse From 1900 to 1919 In these stirring and tremendous times the American public library has many opportunities for service. Among these one of the highest is that of introducing to their fellowmen those artists who through the printed word interpret human life, and hold aloft the torch of the ideal. To be chosen, therefore, as the official agency for advertising the wares of such American poets as have earned the approval of the Poetry Society of America is both an honor and a peculiarly happy opportunity for continuing our work as promoters of good reading. What the Syracuse Reprint Is Toward the close of 1913 the Poetry Society of America, through a committee selected from its officers and members, made a list of such books of American contemporary poetry as could in their opinion be recommended for purchase by libraries both public and private and for reading and study by all who desired to keep in touch with poetic movements in this country. The list of that year was printed in the columns of the Library Journal for February, 1914. This first of our Library Lists was extended to cover more or less perfectly the years from 1900 to 1913. Librarians were at that time noting the awakened interest in our own native poetry, and there was a call for the publication of like Lists in the years that followed. The Library Journal continuing its hospitality, the Lists hereafter were made every December and were given to the public in the February following. After a while the Syracuse Public Library, through the interest of its chief librarian, Paul M. Paine, reprinted those Lists in its Bulletin and through these reprints the Lists have reached a still wider usefulness. The List that follows here is a restated and somewhat condensed arrangement of all these Lists, thus including volumes from 1900 to 1919. It has been carefully arranged, the titles and publishers are named, a note of appreciation and a short quotation are given with each author. In this form it is hoped that the Syracuse Reprint will meet a wide need among people who feel the necessity to know the poetry of today and among those who do not but would if they realized how much more there is of it and how vital a thing it is at the present moment. It should be understood by all users of this List that the Committee distinctly disclaim definitive judgments upon the ultimate value of the books chosen. They simply present to poetry lovers and to all who believe expression in poetry (as well as in the other arts) to be essential to our national development, a guide to present-day trends in poetry - a means of finding out what is happening in our own poetic realm. One would say that the people who wish to be fairly well read in our national literature should know at least these among the many hundreds of volumes of native poetry that might be annually urged upon them. The effort has been made to include books that show finished artistry, fresh impulses, some real contribution of new born thought, some fresh inspiration illuminating old thought, or some bold and noble dash that comes from the depths of a soul intensely native and innately chaste. To be sure omissions of valued books sometimes occur. Not all books of poetry are published by well-known publishers. Out-of-the-way printers often get hold of a gem of purest ray serene. Hence the Committee are glad to receive suggestions from any source as to privately-printed or other books of verse that might otherwise escape their attention. Address the Chairman of the Committee, Mrs. Martha Foote Crow, 16 Morningside Avenue, New York City. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Familiar Verse: Vers De Societe HE Wampum Library of American Litera ture has been planned to include a series of uniform volumes, each of Which shall deal with the development of a single literary species, trac ing the evolution of this definite form here in the United States, and presenting in chronological se quence typical examples chosen from the writings of American authors. The editors of the several volumes provide critical introductions, in Which they outline the history of the form as it has been evolved in the literature of the world. Every volume is complete in itself, and wholly independent of its fellows. It contains a large variety of carefully chosen selections taken chiefly from the works of writers now no longer living; and although it has been found advisable some times to draw on writings of authors born in the first half of the nineteenth century, no selection has been made from any living American writer whose birth has occurred since December 3lst.
