Book Synopsis La Prison républicaine by : Robert Badinter
Download or read book La Prison républicaine written by Robert Badinter and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Prisoners of War in the Hundred Years War by : Rémy Ambühl
Download or read book Prisoners of War in the Hundred Years War written by Rémy Ambühl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of prisoners of war was firmly rooted in the practice of ransoming in the Middle Ages. By the opening stages of the Hundred Years War, ransoming had become widespread among the knightly community, and the crown had already begun to exercise tighter control over the practice of war. This led to tensions between public and private interests over ransoms and prisoners of war. Historians have long emphasised the significance of the French and English crowns' interference in the issue of prisoners of war, but this original and stimulating study questions whether they have been too influenced by the state-centred nature of most surviving sources. Based on extensive archival research, this book tests customs, laws and theory against the individual experiences of captors and prisoners during the Hundred Years War, to evoke their world in all its complexity.

Book Synopsis A History of Confinement in Palestine: The Prison Web by : Stéphanie Latte Abdallah
Download or read book A History of Confinement in Palestine: The Prison Web written by Stéphanie Latte Abdallah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the contemporary history of the imprisonment of Palestinians in Israeli prisons since 1967, and, since the 2000s, in Palestinian facilities. The prison experience is widely shared in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It endurably marks personal and collective stories. Since the Occupation of the Palestinian Territories in 1967, mass incarceration has spun a prison web, a kind of suspended detention. Approximately, 40 percent of the male population has been to prison. It shows how the judicial and prison practices applied to Palestinian residents of the OPT are major fractal devices of control contributing to the management of Israeli borders, and shape a specific bordering system based on a mobility regime: such borders are mobile, networked, and endless. This history of confinement is that of the prison web, and of the in-between political, social, and personal spaces people weave between Inside and Outside prison. Based on in-depth ethnographic fieldwork, oral and written sources, archives, and extensive institutional documentation, this political anthropology book deals with carceral citizenships and subjectivities. Over time, imprisonment has had profound effects on personal experiences: on masculinities, femininities, gender relations, parentality, and intimacy. Woven like a web, this story is built around places, moments, people, and their testimonies.
Book Synopsis Reflections on Life in Ghettos, Camps and Prisons by : Simon Turner
Download or read book Reflections on Life in Ghettos, Camps and Prisons written by Simon Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on Life in Ghettos, Camps and Prisons explores the relationship between ghettos, camps, places of detention and prisons with a focus on those people who are confined, encamped, imprisoned, detained, stuck, or forcibly removed through the lens of ‘stuckness’. From a point of departure in anthropology, with important contributions from criminology, geography and philosophy, the chapters explore how life is lived in and across these sites of confinement by focusing on the tactics of everyday life, while being mindful of how forms of abjection are constitutive elements of these sites. Stuckness, from this inter-disciplinary perspective, is not simply a function of the spatial form it takes; we need to understand how temporality animates stuckness as an important dimension of confinement. Death, the ultimate temporal boundary, emerges as particularly significant in this regard. With case studies from Palestine, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Northern Australia, Rwanda, Ivory Coast and Nicaragua, the contributors focus on the empirical question of how structures of stuckness, confinement and forced mobility impact on the possibilities of ‘making life’. Suggesting new ways of thinking about how temporality and spatiality intersect and overlap in the lives of people struggling to manage conditions of stuckness, Reflections on Life in Ghettos, Camps and Prisons will be of great interest to scholars of anthropology, geography, criminology and philosophy. The chapters in this book originally published as a special issue of Ethnos.

Book Synopsis Prison Architecture and Punishment in Colonial Senegal by : Dior Konaté
Download or read book Prison Architecture and Punishment in Colonial Senegal written by Dior Konaté and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past four decades, a rich scholarship has investigated the emergence of the prison in Europe and North America, mainly the connection between institutional architecture, techniques of social control, and mechanisms of discipline. Prison Architecture and Punishment in Colonial Senegal asks if these connections did exist in colonial Senegal since prisons in Africa had never been the focus of such scholarship. This book addresses three main themes. First, it analyzes prison buildings and their changing architectural forms throughout the colonial period to highlight how the French used prison architecture to control Africans. Second, it describes the connections between the internal layout of prison spaces and punishment to show how the design of prisons expressed the notions of punishment and reforms. The book also undertakes a critical assessment of inmates’ agency in reshaping the world of prisons in colonial Senegal. Finally, it discusses the legacy of colonial prisons in independent Senegal. By providing a comprehensive history of prison architecture in Senegal, the book helps insert Africa into a more global history by offering a uniquely comparative study of colonialism, architecture, and punishment.

Book Synopsis Yearbook of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment/Annuaire de la convention européenne pour la prévention de la torture et des peines ou traitements inhumains ou dégradants by : Council of Europe/Conseil de l'Europe
Download or read book Yearbook of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment/Annuaire de la convention européenne pour la prévention de la torture et des peines ou traitements inhumains ou dégradants written by Council of Europe/Conseil de l'Europe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 1806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in June 1987. It entered into force in February 1989 and all 47 member States are Parties to the Convention. The Convention has already established itself as an important human rights instrument. Its approach is quite different from that of the European Convention on Human Rights. Whereas the ECHR provides a remedy for particular human rights violations after the event, the Convention for the Prevention of Torture (ECPT) seeks to prevent human rights violations, through a system of visits to places of detention. The Convention is intended to be an integrated part of the Council of Europe system for the protection of human rights, placing a proactive non-judicial mechanism alongside the reactive judicial mechanism established under the ECHR. The Yearbook of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture offers an essential annual overview of developments in relation to the ECPT. Part One contains information on ratifications and other such issues in the authentic English and French texts. Part Two has details in English and French of the membership and activities of the Convention. Part Three reprints the twentieth annual General Report of the ECPT in the official English and French texts. Part Four contains the ECPT's reports to States and the State responses thereto that were made public during the year in question. The ECPT's reports are published in the official English and/or French texts and State responses in the English and/or French versions submitted by the States concerned. Bilingual English and French; two-volume set.
