Book excerpt: A micro-analytic approach based on an integration of elements from Agency and Transactions-cost theories, was followed to develop a theoretical framework for characterizing vertical coordination decisions at the firm level. Vertical coordination modes were defined as all possible arrangements between buyers and sellers along a continuum including spot markets and vertical integration at the extremes, and contracts in between. By including asset specificity in a principal-agent model under conditions of uncertainty and different risk attitudes, the study's main argument has been that both individuals' characteristics (such as risk attitudes, leverage position, and size) and transaction attributes jointly determine optimal vertical coordination mode decisions. An experimental design approach with an application to crop contracting in East Central Illinois, was followed to test the study's hypotheses. In addition to supporting transactions-costs arguments and mainly the significant effect of asset specificity in driving organizational form choice, the results further suggest that a joint treatment of transaction and individual characteristics is warranted, for explaining and predicting vertical coordination or organizational form decisions.

Book excerpt: This paper aims to describe the implication for transaction costs for agricultural marketing channel structure and outline a model of vertical coordination in agriculture. Considering new ways of assessing the true cost of conducting business is an important step towards improving system and reducing such costs. This is the question of appropriate scope of the corporation. The corporation should leverage its resources into every business in which it can create value. The paper is based on recent work done by the author for the Indian agribusiness supply chain (Rakesh 2004). The rationale for undertaking work of this sort stems from two main objectives. First is a general dissatisfaction with the way economist have approached their study of vertical coordination in the broader framework of political economy (Sukhpal 2000) and others. The second perspective from which this work has emerged is the belief that a sensible coordination of the theories from the institutional economics, supply chain management and relationship marketing can be applied fruitfully to the study of agri food and agri commodity supply chains. When the emphasis within most agricultural system and most predominantly Indian agriculture is changing from policy dependence to more market orientation and when technological and structural changes suggest a need for a more analytical and dynamic approach. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the possibility of using a series of studies from Institutional economics as a basis of detailed diagnostic investigation of individual relationship within agricultural supply chain systems and to explore the implications for vertical coordination and integration. This study is a need to bridge the gap in the study of agricultural supply chains by concentrating on relationship between contractual organizational forms and their strategic viability. We will thus explore the scope of corporation in a strategic context. The rest of the paper concentrates closely on the nature of such contractual forms. It starts by considering recent antecedent research from the institutional economics and then discusses approaches to evaluate vertical coordination before applying one approach to the assessment of ITC e-choupal sourcing and rural retailing system. It studies the E-Chaupal experiment from transaction costs perspective and studies its scope within the context of the nature of it' corporate strategy.

Book excerpt: The paper aims to investigate Thorstein Veblen (1898) institutional theoretical approach to the analysis of hybrid forms in agribusiness. A comparative assessment of Transaction Cost Economics against to Veblen's evolutionary approach, originated from the “Old” Institutionalism, was performed. First it was found that a distinctive characteristic of Veblen's theory is based on the notion of a broad understanding of institutions that considers habits of thought as the core of institutional fabrics. In that regard organizations are also institutions because they induce the evolvement of habits collectively. Second it is stressed out in Veblen's theory the endogenous relationship among individuals and institutions, called by Hodgson (2007) as “reconstitutive downward causation.” That is distinctive from New Institutional Economics that follows an approach based on methodological individualism in which institutions are the result of individual choices. In Veblen's theory institutions are as much the result of individual choices as act over choices through the enforcement of habits of thought. So there is a recursive relationship between individuals and institutions. Veblen's stressed out contributions: (i) a broad concept of institution, and (ii) institutional recursive relationships, both are of great value to the investigation of agribusiness systems. The article provides an assessment of three Brazilian beef alliances which have distinctive governance arrangements, based on horizontal and hierarchical structures. The analysis performed indicates that transaction costs play a minor role on the definition of the governance arrangements. Horizontal governance depends upon relational density to deliver coordination, on the other hand, vertical governance relies on the hierarchical leadership of a “captain” that guarantees cooperative behavior based on economic incentives and vertical control. The empirical illustration provided indications that the patterns of habits of thought and relational density are of key importance to the governance of hybrid forms in agribusiness.

Book excerpt: "Companies in food- and agribusiness chains and networks are facing ever-faster changes in the business environment, to which they must respond through continuous innovation. Societal concerns regarding animal welfare and environmental issues have to be met in a very competitive, increasingly global environment. The growing concern of consumers regarding the quality, traceability and environmental friendliness of products and processes call for fundamentally new ways of developing, producing and marketing products. New ways of organizing food supply networks, with new ties between firms and even between formerly separate sectors -such as the health and the food sector- are needed to cope with these new demands. This publication focusses on the dynamic response to these changes in chains and networks. Important topics include among others: critical success factors for design and control of innovative chains and networks, globalization of the business environment, effects of institutional and policy change, governance structures, technologies for managing interaction and design of information architectures for chains and networks."

Book excerpt: Reprint of the 1957 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Agribusiness is the business of agricultural production which involves the production, protection, sales, and marketing of the product to satisfy the customers need. The term is a portmanteau of agriculture and business and was coined in 1957 by John Davis and Ray Goldberg. It includes agrichemicals, breeding, crop production (farming or contract farming), distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. All agents of the food and fiber value chain and those institutions that influence it are part of the agribusiness system. In their book A Concept of Agribusiness, Goldberg and Davis provided a rigorous economic framework for the field. They traced a complex value-added chain that begins with the farmer's purchase of seed and livestock and ends with a product fit for the consumer's table. It may rightfully be considered one of the foundation studies on the subject. Scarce in the original.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research aimed at finding the link between the governance structures and the coordination in Brazilian beef alliances. The paper provides a review of the literature on the coordination of the Brazilian and International beef agribusiness system that shows the importance of adequate governance to the system's players. The theoretical analysis is based upon the transaction cost economics in order to identify the transactions' dimensions and on the concepts of relative scope and embeddedness to find the density of relations among agents. The analytical model makes use of the transactions cost dimensions - asset specificity, uncertainty and frequency in order to explain the choice for the alliance hybrid governance structure. The governance specificities of each alliance that arise from the leadership profile - cattle producers, breed association, pack industry, retailer - are explained by the combined analysis of members' relative scope and embeddedness. The research methodology was based on multiple case studies with data obtained through interviews with alliances' managers. The study found evidence that agents' coordination is strengthened in same basis by cattle producers' leadership in a horizontal network of dense relations, and also through retailer vertical control.

Producers, processors, traders and retailers of agricultural and food products operate in an economic and institutional environment that is increasingly dominated by global developments. Therefore, organizing efficient and effective supply chains as well as managing collaboration among participating firms requires an international perspective. This book presents theoretical and practical insights from many different parts of the world. Topics covered include classical supply chain management issues like logistics, information exchange (e.g. tracking and tracing), quality control, safety assurance, and chain performance. Other timely issues covered are joint innovation, and shared responsibility for sustainability in agri-food supply chains. Special attention is given to issues of governance and organization of chains and networks, for example, by focussing on the role of producer organisations (such as farmer cooperatives) in their effort to combine horizontal and vertical collaboration in the international upply chain. This book is relevant for both academics and managers interested in the latest advances in research on management and organization of international agri-food chains and networks."

It also provides an introduction to data analysis and incorporates many examples. Supplemental materials are available for additional practice and further exploration. Unique to the Second Edition is the inclusion of a chapter on consumer behavior and food preferences, as well as relevant areas of research. The authors introduce readers to the agricultural supply chain, including forecasting and inventory management. Succinct and approachable, this text sets the stage for an enjoyable and effective learning experience.
