Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to evaluate the ability of two agricultural system models, the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) and the Coupled Model (CoupModel), to simulate temporal nitrate mass loading below the root zone. To tackle this evaluation effort the following research objectives were developed: (1) determine the sensitivity of key model output responses for a selected agricultural system model to the variability of input parameters over different vertical-spatial and temporal domains; (2) compare and elucidate the ability of two agricultural system models to simulate water flux and nitrate loading at the plot scale; (3) explore the capability of an agricultural system model that is fully calibrated at one location to simulate the water flux and nitrate loading at another location with similar soil and cropping characteristics; and (4) use a calibrated and validated agricultural system model to predict groundwater recharge and nitrate loading resulting from the implementation of a best management practice (BMP) established on a parcel of land where groundwater impacts due to nitrogen application have been observed. Two study sites where elevated nitrate concentrations in groundwater have been observed were used in this research. The primary study site was the shallow unconfined Abbotsford Aquifer, located in Lower Fraser Valley, British Columbia, where elevated groundwater nitrate concentration is attributed to excess nitrogen inputs compared with the nitrogen demand of the red raspberry crop. The secondary study site was the Thornton Well Field in southwestern Ontario where a legacy of agricultural activities in the area has resulted in an increased groundwater nitrate concentration. In summary, global sensitivity analysis not only identified the most influential parameters of the model that required calibration but also provided a useful guide to define the timing and vertical-location of the observation data that is most effective to use as the calibration target, and design appropriate experiments for collecting such data. Both selected models, RZWQM and CoupModel, were reliable for prediction of nitrate loading time series below the raspberry root zone; however, the CoupModel performed better than the RZWQM due to its flexibility for modifying growth parameters when perennial crops are simulated. The calibrated CoupModel was applicable for simulating nitrate flux below the raspberry root zone in a nearby farm within the Abbotsford region except for the years when organic fertilizer was applied. While the results of this transportability effort are promising, additional validation at similar fields under different management practices is encouraged. Also, development of models that capture the effects of raspberry inter-rows cropping system on nitrate and water flux below the raspberry root zone is essential. At the Thornton Well Field, the BMPs were effective in reducing nitrate load into the groundwater; however, various time frames are needed to observe significant response to the BMPs at different farmlands.

Specifically,this work investigates the sources of nitrate to groundwater, nitrogen loading rates, and therelationships between land use, hydrogeologic parameters, aquifer properties and nitrate concentrationsat drinking water depths. This work is focused in the Central Valley, California, an areawhere intensive agricultural production coexists with a large peri-urban population entirely dependenton groundwater for drinking water and household use. Drinking water with elevatednitrate concentration has associated health risks. Nitrate in groundwater in the Central Valley ismainly the result of agriculture, but can also originate from septic tank leachate or natural sources. Within agricultural sources, the amount of nitrate leached to groundwater from individual croptypes is not well documented and also varies. Beyond that, complicated interactions betweenphysical aquifer characteristics, land use, and groundwater age mixing can affect the amount ofnitrate actually pumped by wells. This work is composed of three chapters, each focused on theindividual aspects mentioned above by use of Bayesian and machine learning statistical models.Boron isotopes, nitrogen and oxygen isotopes of nitrate, as well as iodine proved useful as a setof indicators of nitrate contamination source by way of a Bayesian mixing model and source apportionmentwas performed on an individual well basis for a portion of the Central Valley. Eachwell investigated exhibited evidence of nitrate source mixing, though several wells’ chemistry indicateda clear majority source. The manure and fertilizer sources were generally distinguishable,however, the fertilizer and septic source were not as clearly differentiated. This work highlightsthe uncertainty associated with nitrogen source tracking. Probability distributions for nitrogenloading rates of crop groups were estimated with an exponential distribution generalized linearmodel using Bayesian methods. Estimated loading rates were compared to previous measurementsand estimates. Most compared favorably, though mass balance estimates for several cropgroups were higher than the model estimates. This was attributed to dilution with old groundwateror river water and denitrification. Confined animal feeding operations, citrus & subtropicalcrops, and vegetable & berry crops had the highest predicted nitrogen loading rates, respectively, while water & natural and alfalfa & pasture had the lowest. The estimated rates can provide abetter assessment of land use impacts to water quality absent information on farm nutrient management.A machine learning model was used to produce a 3D map of nitrate concentration atdrinking water depths in the Central Valley. A hybrid multi-modeling approach used numericalmodel outputs as predictors and groundwater redox characteristics and field scale unsaturatedzone nitrogen flux were the most important variables related to nitrate concentration. Nitrate concentrationsless than 2 mg/L NO3-N were generally located in the basin subregion and nitrateconcentrations greater than 10 mg/L NO3-N were the most common in eastern alluvial fans subregion.The map could be used by regulators to determine priority areas for nutrient managementrules or by homeowners to determine their individual risk of a nitrate contaminated well.

Book excerpt: Selection of agricultural management practices to reduce nitrate leaching from soils can only be successful if both nitrate loading rates from soils to shallow aquifers and groundwater residence times are quantified. Elevated nitrate concentrations in shallow unconfined aquifers are commonly observed in agricultural areas as a result of increased N inputs. In the Judith River Watershed (JRW) in central Montana, USA, notably high nitrate concentrations in groundwater and stream water have exceeded the U.S. EPA drinking water standard of 10 mg L -1 for at least two decades. This large (24,400 ha) watershed drains immediately into the Missouri River, a tributary of the Mississippi River. Over an eleven month period in 2012, we measured groundwater and surface water nitrate concentrations across a hydrologically isolated strath terrace. We use the resulting data to constrain nitrate accumulation dynamics in the shallow aquifer. Nitrate is relatively conservative in this location, as it is high in groundwater (17.57 +/- 4.29 mg L -1; all groundwater samples pooled together), and remains high in streams and springs that drain the landform (15.67 +/- 9.45 mg L -1; all surface water and spring samples pooled together). We use a numerical model to simulate the character of nitrate accumulation in the aquifer as a whole, in order to evaluate how the entire period of cultivation has contributed to current nitrate concentrations, and begin to predict response times for effects of land use change. We consider the effect of groundwater residence time and travel time on nitrate loading using particle tracking in a three dimensional model aquifer. We find no correlation with nitrate concentrations in groundwater and emerging surface waters, and suggest approaches for improving both the geometry of the model and the selection of sites in future work. Overall, our results imply that groundwater residence times are several decades at most, suggesting that similar timeframes will be needed to reduce overall nitrate concentrations in groundwater and emergent streams to below drinking water standards. Preliminary evaluation of several management scenarios suggests that both increased fertilizer use efficiency and rotational strategies may be needed to prevent the loss of soil N to groundwater.
