Book excerpt: In a Third Look, Joseph Maida reflects on Lee Friedlander's nudes from the 1970's and 80's, reinterpreting this series as a cutting edge homage both to Friedlander, the modernist titan of photography, and to LGBTQAI+ bodies across gender and identity spectra. When curator John Szarkowski first presented Friedlander's nudes in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1991, he wrote that "the qualities of generosity and openness, and the habit of continual exploration--of logical extemporization enlivened by an unassuming audacity" make Friedlander's nudes so "richly and rewardingly complex." Maida, viewing the traits of openness, exploration, extemporization, and audacity as queerness itself, reimagined Friedlander's nudes by picturing different bodies in A Third Look to converse with Friedlander's. Maida calls their feminist reclamation of history "a visual queering of modernist photography, providing a visible reconciliation of where the canon of art photography has historically allowed us to see" with the broader spectrum of the human nude.

Book excerpt: In this expanded third edition, renowned scholar Stephen Skowronek, addresses Donald J. Trump’s presidency. Skowronek’s insights have fundamentally altered our understanding of the American presidency. His “political time” thesis has been particularly influential, revealing how presidents reckon with the work of their predecessors, situate their power within recent political events, and assert their authority in the service of change. A classic widely used in courses on the presidency, Skowronek’s book has greatly expanded our understanding of and debates over the politics of leadership. It clarifies the typical political problems that presidents confront in political time, as well as the likely effects of their working through them, and considers contemporary innovations in our political system that bear on the leadership patterns from the more distant past. Drawing out parallels in the politics of leadership between Andrew Jackson and Franklin Roosevelt and between James Polk and John Kennedy, it develops a new and revealing perspective on the presidential leadership of Clinton, Bush, Obama, and now Trump. In this third edition Skowronek carefully examines the impact of recent developments in government and politics on traditional leadership postures and their enactment, given the current divided state of the American polity, the impact of the twenty-four-hour news cycle, of a more disciplined and homogeneous Republican party, of conservative advocacy of the “unitary theory” of the executive, and of progressive disillusionment with the presidency as an institution. A provocative review of presidential history, Skowronek’s book brims with fresh insights and opens a window on the institution of the executive office and the workings of the American political system as a whole. Intellectually satisfying for scholars, it also provides an accessible volume for students and general readers interested in the American presidency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1974 and 1990 more than thirty countries in southern Europe, Latin America, East Asia, and Eastern Europe shifted from authoritarian to democratic systems of government. This global democratic revolution is probably the most important political trend in the late twentieth century. In The Third Wave, Samuel P. Huntington analyzes the causes and nature of these democratic transitions, evaluates the prospects for stability of the new democracies, and explores the possibility of more countries becoming democratic. The recent transitions, he argues, are the third major wave of democratization in the modem world. Each of the two previous waves was followed by a reverse wave in which some countries shifted back to authoritarian government. Using concrete examples, empirical evidence, and insightful analysis, Huntington provides neither a theory nor a history of the third wave, but an explanation of why and how it occurred. Factors responsible for the democratic trend include the legitimacy dilemmas of authoritarian regimes; economic and social development; the changed role of the Catholic Church; the impact of the United States, the European Community, and the Soviet Union; and the "snowballing" phenomenon: change in one country stimulating change in others. Five key elite groups within and outside the nondemocratic regime played roles in shaping the various ways democratization occurred. Compromise was key to all democratizations, and elections and nonviolent tactics also were central. New democracies must deal with the "torturer problem" and the "praetorian problem" and attempt to develop democratic values and processes. Disillusionment with democracy, Huntington argues, is necessary to consolidating democracy. He concludes the book with an analysis of the political, economic, and cultural factors that will decide whether or not the third wave continues. Several "Guidelines for Democratizers" offer specific, practical suggestions for initiating and carrying out reform. Huntington's emphasis on practical application makes this book a valuable tool for anyone engaged in the democratization process. At this volatile time in history, Huntington's assessment of the processes of democratization is indispensable to understanding the future of democracy in the world.

Book excerpt: The Boston Globe’s number-one bestseller is back, revised and updated for the 2008 season and presented in a new trim size. Jerry Remy’s name and face are already known to millions of fans. During baseball season 400,000 or more households tune in to listen to his broadcast of Red Sox games. But many learned to love him years ago when he was traded to the Sox, earning a trip to the 1978 All-Star Game in his first year with the team. Remy hit .278, scored eighty-seven runs, and stole thirty bases that season. Injured in 1984, Remy never played another game. In 1988 he began his work as an announcer, working color commentary for Red Sox broadcasts on NESN, a basic cable channel available throughout New England and by satellite across the country. In Watching Baseball Remy explains America’s favorite sport by going inside the minds of coaches and players to reveal the game within the game. He takes readers around the diamond, pointing out the positioning of infielders, what’s really going on during batting practice, how catchers and pitchers call a game, the difference between high cheese and a knuckler, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you were told that your grandfather is coming by the house tonight but you know that statement can't be true because he's dead and his funeral is tomorrow? I was twelve years old at the time when I heard those words. This was my first introduction into the world of malevolent demonic spirits. You will see exactly what spiritual warfare is really like--no red glowing eyes, no green vomit, no unusual smells, no possession, no levitation, and no flies. You will see what evil really does--what I did and the mistakes I made. You will see what the Holy Spirit showed me, what he told me to do, and how he protected and helped me to overcome the evil that came to my residence. This extremely interesting book, Beyond the Thin Veil, was written as a collection of short stories tied together, creating a series of short scenes within a larger story. Named after a prophet in the Bible, the author sets out to write stories of significant events about himself and the people that were important in his life in an entertaining and uniquely original story. Being born out of wedlock, Black, and with a Jewish first name, then being told when he was in the fifth grade that he had been adopted, turned his whole life upside down. He struggles in meeting his biological mom and his brothers and sisters for the first time. He found the inner strength and courage to push through those childhood years. Knowing little to nothing of his family's history, the author sets out to make sure that his defendants get a glimpse into his life, something that they wouldn't find on ancestry.com. Who doesn't like a good story? Like the Roman military tribune Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) in the movie Risen, the author took a similar journey that made me question my own held beliefs in spirituality, religion, and the supernatural, and I discovered many truths about my experiences. The book is original, dynamic, informative, unbelievable, entertaining, and true; it's quite a tale. And if you are fascinated by the supernatural and want to know more about the Holy Spirit, angels, demons, and spiritual warfare, then you will enjoy reading about his encounters with spirits, good and bad. How his faith in God strengthened him after receiving a Cancer diagnosis while writing the book. He will take you on an adventurous roller-coaster journey of emotional highs and lows. The author believes in the biblical truths and God's promises that he heard when he was a child. Attending a small church in California, he has put into practice those teachings and principles of faith, overcoming fear and life's hurdles. Nathan believes "When you take this journey through these pages, you will find that faith overcomes fear." The author encourages you to find your God-given purpose in life, to see your Boaz, God's providence, God's interventions in your life. Don't just survive--thrive!
